Marcintosh: To the right was piled up these big bricks, like street bricks. I mean, they were heavy and there was maybe about 12 of them. So, he [officer] said 'Was this here before?' I said, 'No, no, this has got to be that group called the Anarchists Carpenters and Masons,'" said Papia.

so you're saying the "UNIONS" are behind this?

A bizarre image was spray-painted on a downtown building in Tampa, just days before the Republican National Convention.
The image resembles a picture from the movie comic book "V for Vendetta".

FTFY, moron "journalist".

Moore may be a crotchety old man but he deserves some friggin' credit.

/Although I loved Weaving & Portman in the movie.

Yes, I can type. I can also score a 142 on a standardized IQ test and place in the 98th on ASVAB tests.

I guess you're not used to those with intelligence having disregard for those who want to "take our country back" to the 1940's.

Also, it's a message of support for this year's choices by the Republican party, as a reminder that even though the Republicans still have 99 problems, Sarah Palin isn't one of them this year.

Wait, the convention is a few days away, and this wasn't all found by the secret service? Even for a candidate you would think they would do pretty intense advanced work. Or the secret service saw it, said meh, and moved on. Is it common for someone planning some sort of terrorist act to mark their target first?

tarheel07: FTFA: "Police said crews were sent out to paint over the image."

I'm surprised budget cuts haven't given police this job yet.

Here's the thing, if that job had previously been one for the police department, it would have been cut and privatized, because government is bad and private enterprise is inherently efficient. And yet, cops might still end up doing the work because as their salaries get slashed to balance budgets, they're out looking for moonlight jobs to make ends meet at home.

MacWizard: Who rode into town on a hippopotamos.

I'm the mother flippin' Rhymenocerous
My beats are fat and the birds are on my back
And I'm horny
(I'm horny! )
If you choose to proceed you will indeed concede
Cos I hit you with my flow
The Wild Rhymo Stampede.
I'm not just wild,
I'm trained, domesticated
I was raised by a rapper and rhino that dated
And subsequently procreated
That's how it goes
Here's the Hiphopopotamus
The hip hop hippo

[Jermaine:]They call me the Hiphopopotamus
My lyrics are bottomless...
Um...
Ahem...

They call me the Hiphopopotamus
Flows that glow like phosphorous
Poppin' off the top of this esophagus
Rockin' this metropolis
I'm not a large water-dwelling mammal
Where did you get that preposterous hypothesis?
Did Steve tell you that, perchance?
Steve.

My rhymes and records they don't get played
Because my records and rhymes they don't get made
And if you rap like me you don't get paid
And if you roll like me you don't get laid.

My rhymes are so potent that in this small segment
I made all of the ladies in the area pregnant
Yes, sometimes my lyrics are sexist
But you lovely biatches and hoes should know I'm trying to correct this.

Other rappers dis me
Say my rhymes are sissy.
Why?
Why?
Why?
What?
Why exactly?
What? Why?
Be more constructive with your feedback, please. Why?
Why?

Why, because I rap about reality?
Like me and my grandma drinking a cup of tea?
There ain't no party like my nanna's tea party.
Hey! Ho!

I'm the motherflippin'
I'm the motherflippin'
I'm the motherflippin'
Who's the motherflippin?
I'm the motherflippin'
I'm the motherflippin'
I'm the motherflippin'

Mikey1969: dittybopper: Mikey1969: THIS. THIS is what the decline of the printed newspaper is bringing us, shiat written at a second grade level, welcome to the future.

Bullshiat. It's *ALWAYS* been like that, it's the nature of print journalism. It's just that now, we can easily and individually check out their sources and show them to be full of it.

Nah, when I was a kid, print journalism was held up as an example of quality over quantity, when compared to broadcast journalism. Print journalism used to actually have grammar and fact checking, they didn't slough off the facts and let Spellcheck handle everything else. The shiat has been seriously and noticeably going downhill just in the last 10 years. It was far from perfect before, but it wasn't the total joke it is now.

No, It only *SEEMED* like they had fact-checking. Yellow journalism is as old as journalism itself, and even the so-called gold standards, when held up to a microscope, prove to be iron pyrite. Journalists back before the Internet age were just as biased, just as sloppy, it's just that they were largely the only gatekeepers of information, and thus it was almost impossible to fact-check them in any meaningful way. It would take too long and too much effort to dig up the necessary information quickly, and really the only organizations with the resources to do something like that were the news organizations themselves, and they understandably wouldn't be too keen on making themselves look less trustworthy.

Ever had first hand knowledge of a news story, or even a subject which you have in-depth knowledge of, and subsequently read an article about it or watched a news story, and you notice they got some fundamental fact wrong? But then you believe what they report about something you don't directly know about? Ever wonder about that phenomenon?

JerseyTim: Ha, it's synonymous with Anonymous.

On the rooftop of a building in a [FLORIDA] metropolis,
RNC beset by image synonymous with Anonymous,
prior to a rally monotonous and full of pompousness,
for the party of the pachyderm and Wal-Mart hippopotamus.
A pile of random masonry is, granted, somewhat ominous,
but hardly represents a vital threat to Tampa's populace.
They'll be rounded up, locked down, then released on own recognizance--
a practice of state dominance that is sadly not anomalous.
My somnolence and apathy for this story is, yet, bottomless.

Guy Fawkes became famous for trying to destroy parliament and create a Catholic Theocracy in England.

Um, guys?

Symbolism's weird like that. Symbols stop caring about things like reality and context. Which is why Guy Fawkes represents underdog revolutionaries.

And not Theocratic Fascism.

/In the less than immortal words of Maddox, which for some reason come to mind:

Great Comic Book.

I rather liked the movie. It helps if you go in knowing it'll be nothing like the comic.

The ending.

I'm willing to ignore the parts that the Warchowski Bro,,,ummm...people softened up to appeal to a wider audience. But that ENDING.

(SPOILERS)
So you have a repressive, 1984-esque society that puts cameras and microphones everywhere to monitor the citizenry.

The end of the movie had everyone in England getting a Hat and Mask via FedEx (note product placement).

Don't you think that such a repressive government might, I don't know, CHECK EVERYONE'S MAIL!

First of all, fact-checking didn't exist until the mid 1920s; Time and the New Yorker pretty much invented it as a discipline.

But fact checking went out the window at Time & Newsweek in the mid-90s; at a lot of publications, it only happens when a reporter regularly draws complaints (see: Alessandra Stanley). Daily newspapers have always relied on reporters to get it right the first time.

You're arguing that it's somehow a coordinated effort to dumb down the discussion, when the record shows that it's more about profits. Fact checkers and copy editors cost money that is better spent on the houses of publishers and other executives.

But why on earth you're complaining about the lowered standards of print journalism in a thread where TFA is from a TV station is beyond me.
