Okay, let me say one thing: I was thinking along the same lines as submitter, but after reading the comments I want to make clear that I'm not submitter, nor am I the commenter with 999 in their name in the article who VOTED FOR THEIR OWN COMMENT.

I just heard on Kevin Smith's podcast that Portland has the largest strippers per capita in the country. Beating out Tampa is impressive.

It is pretty odd. There's no real blue collar industry, military bases, or heavy tourism to explain why Portland has so many strip clubs (full bar, fully nude), but it works out pretty well.

There's such a glut that most don't have a cover, and they usually have good deals on drinks and food to stand out.

I was just at Devil's Point last week for their annual Bikini Dog & Car Wash charity for the Oregon Humane Society. I didn't realize they no longer had fire dancers, which was once a week. It was neat, but kind of repetitive once you've seen it, and then the whole bar would smell like kerosene the rest of the night.

Wow. The ones in Tampa are either, or. Full nude and no booze or full bar and pasties and no contact.

How exactly do they use fire in their act? I'm guessing this is nothing like the ping pong balls.

One chick had these metal balls full of kerosene (or whatever they use), on a chain, and would swing them around in circles like a flail.

She also had a standard baton, that she would swing around, and would use it for fire-eating, and to briefly light her nipples or ass on fire.

The club was too small for fire breathing.

Portland Fire Chief Erin Janssens strides to the far corner of her office, steps around a maple desk and reaches behind a display of Oregon and U.S. flags to retrieve a 5-foot-long metal baton.

Then things got weird.

Seems asinine, but look at it this way. City officials do nothing. There is an accident that hurts someone. That someone sues the city claiming "why didn't you prevent this from happening"

Since I have seen the ping pong balls and hand cream, I am looking for fire breathing vajaja.

Saw a stripper light her nipple piercings on fire as part of the act. She then laid on her back and did the wave to the fire thing. I took it as a tribute to Jimi Hendrix.

She got a dollar.

Who says I don't support the arts?

I used to go to a skeevy joint out in a tiny town in the most rural part of IL. They didn't really have (or at least, observe) any rules about what the strippers could or couldn't do. They had an act where two girls did a faux lesbian thing involving pouring hot wax on each other and eating it off. It was pretty awesome. Those girls must've made 5 times more money than the rest that night.

I've never seen an act with fire. It doesn't sound very arousing. How do you tuck a buck with the fire spinning around.

Maybe they did have an act like that because the place burned down sometime after I got married.

as someone who recently saw a portland based burlesque troupe in a bar... i'm ok with fire dance acts... although burlesque stuff is really quite dissimilar to strip clubs

It put an end to one of the more interesting acts going at Devil's Point, so I am still annoyed at this new regulation.

don't know the name, it was an accidental viewing. met strangers from portland, said, hey you should check out this bar, and when we got there, the bar had portland burlesque people performing with fires.

/ if they were in new orleans a week or two ago, then maybe... at the always lounge... sounds like geeklesque might be accurate, because they had some joke about the mario brothers in the name of their show

the notorious Station Nightclub fire in Rhode Island in 2003, when fire used in a rock act got out of control and left 100 people dead.

Sort of surprised they allow fire at all. Folks in this area are still a bit twitchy about nightclubs and fire.

It was called the Wildside Caberet in Kenney, IL. You'd think the girls would be toothless hicks, but no, most were not. I think they were mostly college girls paying the bills as the club was far enough from colleges like Uof I Springfield, EIU, and Millikin U that they could keep it a secret from their friends and professors. Some were the older career strippers with the fake boobs and c-section scars, but they were just a few.

But like I said, it burned down and wasn't rebuilt.

I used to live in Alberta. My new neighbors were a troupe of jugglers and acrobats (really). They would do poi dancing in our alley on summer nights and drum circles during the day. The fire dancing was pretty cool; the drum circles . . .

I guess after the success of implementing all those Voter ID laws, the government felt there are new markets for laws that don't do anything.

2012-08-22 02:01:42 PM
Why is this bad? What, we're supposed to wait for a horrible burn injury before we put safety restrictions in place?

The regulation seems reasonable - it went from 15' of clearance to 25' of clearance, but that extended clearance can be waived by demonstrating that the original 15' clearance is safe for a given act. Performers must have two spotters standing by with wet towels; the old rule called for just one. A venue now must have sprinklers and a 12-foot ceiling above the stage.

None of that seems unreasonable. "Gee, if we're going to do this indoors, let's ensure the ceiling's high enough to avoid being painted with flaming fuel. If we do paint the ceiling with flaming fuel, let's ensure that the building at least has sprinklers, so we don't go all 'Great White' on the audience."

"uh, Sarge, now that's illegal, I'll need to patrol the clubs to make sure it ain't happening."

most common line i hear here in Portland in reference to food and teh boobs is:

"ever been to A-crop?? they got the best steaks in town! the guy raises them himself!"

i actually had to turn to the wall to eat my dinner. one of the more uncomfortable meals i've had.

how anyone can eat this

It's the free expression guarantee of the Oregon Constitution. Article 1 section 7 reads:

"No law shall be passed restraining the free expression of opinion, or restricting the right to speak, write, or print freely on any subject whatever; but every person shall be responsible for the abuse of this right."

The Oregon Supreme Court has interpreted this to protect porno stores, nude dancing, and private sex shows. Which is why you have so many of all of those things in Portland.

If that was the mode of use it would explain why they all started shaving a few years ago.
