(AsiaOne)   There is an abandoned factory in New York city where graffiti artists are allowed to display their talents and people come from miles away to admire the artwork. So naturally somebody plans to build a luxury high-rise there   (asiaone.com) divider line 120

Same as it ever was.

i know, and there used to be the amazing wall running through berlin where kids could graffiti stuff, but then a bunch of freedom-hating assholes came in and tore it down.

First, a spray painter that can draw cartoons and balloon letters is no more an "artist" than are street rappers or pop rock stars. Second, a luxury high rise will bring more money to NYC, bring in more jobs (both in construction and, afterwards, in services), and will probably house a few real, successful artists.

It's shiat like this that makes it hard for people to like liberal, hipster douche bags.

It's not really graffiti unless it involves running from The Man. The developers are just helping keep things real.

There are some really great pieces in New York, if you know where to look. Some very talented writers out there. I've had several pictures of pieces as wallpaper on my computer over the years. It sucks it's going to get covered up, because graffiti writing is a more constructive use of time, as opposed to selling drugs, sitting on one's ass playing XBox all day, or doing absolutely nothing. I have absolutely no artistic ability at all; I can't even draw decent stick figures. So what some of these people can do really astonishes me.

Not that I ride the 7 train that often, but it's always cool to see that place when you pass it. And sometimes you can see the side from the LIRR just before you go into the tunnel. Not that I'm for graffiti in general, but I'm ok with it in this case when it's allowed on the property and there's some obvious talent being displayed.

But that whole LIC area is starting to get built up because people are realizing that it's right across the river from Midtown and it's not too hard to get rid of old factories. They even built a park on the waterfront. I know a couple of people who moved there and it's pretty nice even though there isn't much around (yet, I guess).

The building will change, but the graffiti will always be there.

Yeah it's sad because this is the last abandoned place where this kind of thing could take place.

Dont fear change, fear stupidity.

Let's keep a run down building with no historical worth instead of building a place for people to live. Really?

fark graffiti

I just took this picture a few days ago, because it looked cool. And, uh, not a threadjack, because that's graffiti. It wouldn't have looked as cool without the alien-looking person on the boxcar.

Here in San Diego, the tagging is hardcore. Just the other day, while riding the trolley into downtown, I saw one that made me think how tough it is to be on the streets in Cali.

You guys are so cool, with your spray cans and stuff. It's so turrible they're going to tear down this junky lot and build a nice new building there. Maybe next time, I dunno, do your art on a canvas or something.

2012-08-22 11:48:55 AM
I'm with you on this one. It's sad that a blighted ,abandoned, spray painted factory in New York City might be lost.

Rather than tear this one down.... we should be thinking about how we can get more abandoned factories, festooned with graffiti. Without a doubt, that would be a boost to the city.

2012-08-22 11:49:21 AM
It's private property, isn't it? The person or persons who own it get to decide what it's used for, don't they? Perhaps that "well-known French street artist Banga" ought to work up a sweat coming up with the asking price for his studio?

2012-08-22 11:49:50 AM
How come these guys don't ever paint REAL art like Thomas Kincade? Now that guy could paint a sun-dappled cottage that would really make you think.

2012-08-22 11:49:52 AM
well, it was nice that there was a place where people could ply their artisan trade... but, I guess owners of property occasionally want to make a little profit off their ownership.

i bet there will be some big documentary about it

Thisbymaster: Let's keep a run down building with no historical worth instead of building a place for people to live. Really?

But... but... it's art, maaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn. Take away that building and the people who spray paint stuff there may have to actually go out and contribute to society in measurable ways that move us forward as a species... and that's just wrong, dude.

You must drive down I-25 in Southern Colorado... where they have MILES of boxcars sitting there....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that kind of art meant to be temporary?

2012-08-22 11:52:14 AM
Come to Long Island, boys and girls. We got plenty of abandoned buildings for you to play with, and would love to see the gang tags covered up by works of art.

But on a serious note, I'm going to have to take a trip back out to 5Pointz before the demo starts. I haven't been there in awhile.

When (if) the graffiti kids grow up, they can make good money doing things like this:

Sop what's the problem? Take a picture of it, save the picture and tear the building down

Graffiti is SUPPOSED to be temporary.

On Fark, a differing point of view IS "trolling." The word means about as much as "hipster."

That building looks like a trash dumpster threw up all over it.

On a related note: A few years ago, a teen-ager in Oxnard received the longest sentence ever dealt a graffiti vandal in California: eight years.

There's a $500 reward for turning these fools in to the police in O.C.

Hmmm urban decay or urban development. How on earth is this "sad"?

/Is subby the mayor of Detroit?

I work for the railway and there are some really bad ass graffiti work done on the sides of the trains.

2012-08-22 11:58:07 AM
This is sad, without a doubt, but graffiti is ephemeral. It appears, it disappears, it reappears, and that's just how it is. Take plenty of photographs of this abandoned factory in New York, because there you have graffiti whose time has finally come.

About two years ago, graffiti artists were invited to tag a blighted motel in Lansing, Michigan. And boy, did they ever. They did so with the understanding that the motel was slated to be demolished. Was it sad? Sure. But it was inevitable, too. Buildings come and go, but tagging as a practice endures. The artists will find new stone canvasses. And life will go on.

2012-08-22 12:02:07 PM
Hmmm, let's see:

1. Sheet 4' x 8' plywood, $13.95;

2. Can white paint, $17.95;

3. 1' x 2' boards to stiffen and keep it square: $2.79;

Paint anything you want on it, and it is yours to keep, no one can take it away.

Luxury High-Rises.

I live in a trailer on a hill in a meadow in the woods.
That, my friend, is luxury.
I never hear sirens.
My door is unlocked.
My neighbors keep an eye out for me and we all say hello.
We see one walking and offer a ride.

Luxury?
Define luxury.
Is it having unemployed "artists" spray paint your place while you are out or sleeping?
Is it being able to hear you neighbor flush their toilet?
Is it tripping over garbage on the streets?

Wow. I hope you are paying extra for that.

I was confused by the 'trolling" myself. I mean, the guy made a reasonably intelligent comment and it's labeled 'trolling'. You've got to love the internets.

Yes, because the first sentence and that last sentence are so objective ...

1) You cannot say what art is, that's the point, it's someone's PERSONAL expression ...
2) "Liberal, hipster douchebags"? Oh really? Because many cities have actually embraced the street art movement that I wouldn't really label as liberal or hipster ...

It's trolling or it's an extremely stupid argument. Either way, it doesn't add to the discourse other than the post couldn't make a point without devolving into ad hominem attacks on art. Cripes.

The "artists" should pool their money and buy the building. Make it a gallery. Oh right, they probably don't have jobs.

If you don't own it, and you are painting it, then you are vandalizing.

That said outdoor advertisements deserve to be vandalized so I know I wouldn't convict if I was on a jury under those circumstances.

Crewmannumber6: So, this is the last abandoned building in NYC? They're done?

Yes, with the collapse of the last, free, abandoned factory in 2013, NYC began a downward spiral that culminated in the great conclave of 2040, where dirty professionals, artists, and working class people had so widely infested the town, that street entrepreneurs (people who often re-distributed wealth, provided alternative medicines, sensual relief services, and those who simply provided 'blunt force therapy') were at an all time low. Nasty children, screeching as they swarmed over public spaces. With the latest generation of high-tech buildings and the new clean energy sources they used, as well as the so-called "green" practices of these mobs, the rich patina the city used to acquire from the output of its former industrial base.

The beginning of the end.

Making a trip to NYC in October and want to know if worth it / safe hood?

Thanks
