Makh: Ahh, the good old days when shields were raised by hand.

Now I want to see a scene where a starship captain says "Raise shields" and tactical officer starts cranking furiously.

I wonder how old you have to be to remember window crank races.

The last car I owned with window cranks was a '78 Skylark.
But in 2001 when I was car shopping the base Jetta still had cranks.

/and thanks I feel old but the Buick was not new.
//would also enjoy the retro-future hand cranked shields.

And the 20-pound, 1.7-foot-diameter satellite hurled by Padalka will orbit for about three months before burning up in the atmosphere, allowing Russian engineers to track its movement as part of a study on space junk.

Aren't there already thousands of pieces of space junk already up there? Why couldn't they study some of those, rather than creating more junk?

Armor is needed to reinforce the Russian segment, which unlike the U.S. compartments, arrived without the proper protection already in place.

Why does this not surprise me....

Astronauts on spacewalk to hang shields

I don't know who this shields guy is, but I wonder if he really got a fair trial before being hung. We are dealing with Russia after all.

Grither: I kinda wish they had video of the dude hurling the satellite! I assume he tossed it straight backwards relative to their orbit?

No. He tossed it forward and it bounced off the front of the space station, breaking loose some equipment. The cosmonauts shrugged it off. "Oh vell. Ve are studying space junk anyvay."

That was actually how they did it in season 2 of Enterprise.

Grither: I kinda wish they had video of the dude hurling the satellite! I assume he tossed it straight backwards relative to their orbit?

This. The whole idea of "tossing things overboard" in space is inherently amusing.

TFA calls them astronauts, but since they're both russians, shouldn't they be refered to as cosmonauts?

You know what? Give the shields a rest. Catch those little ships in the tractor beam and let the Tie fighters know they can have some easy target practice. Maybe drag a few in for those big gun operators. Lord knows they could use the practice.

I had an '88 VW Fox wagon that had crank-em-ups. I had to pop the handle off and put it back on 180 degrees around 'cause the knob dug into the side of my knee when the window was all the way up the way it came.

/Don't laugh at my Fox, I drove it for 9 years and about 140K miles, that car didn't owe me a dime when I gave it to the Good News Garage.
