Well, to be fair, Paterno hated the guy so much, that he pumped millions into Sandusky's charity, because... that would show the jerk!

Paterno also talked Curley out of sending the report to the police as the "humane option" so he could give ol' Jerry a razzing about getting caught sticking his pickle in some brat in the showers every time they took a steam together in the Football sauna, because that really annoyed Sandusky every time JoePa did that. That old man could be relentless in his ribbings, no doubt about that.

Not to tell you how to raise your kids, but maybe you could take advantage of the teaching moment and make damn sure your kids know how to protect themselves from predators like Sandusky. Because vermin like Joe Paterno won't have their backs. They'll have to depend on themselves.

West Denile virus.

The thing is: it seems completely plausible that Paterno could be so wrapped up in football that he'd not know or
care about Sandusky's crimes. And that is, in a way, even more sad than Paterno actively covering for him.

I still say Paterno knew about it and frankly didn't care, though.

Clearly, JoePa didn't focus enough on football. His team didn't win a single game in over a decade.

The reason the post count is so low is that the white-knighters haven't shown up for the party. Since this didn't post to the Sports tab, I'm guessing it is out of their sight (with that football obsession of theirs, and all)

I remember some white-knighter saying Paterno hated Sandusky, so it was unlikely Paterno ever even knew about the rape (before the Freeh Report showed otherwise) since he hated Sandsky enough to turn him in if he did... so it's one of their talking points, like the whole "JoePa didn't know what sodomy was" crap.

It's all they have left, I think.

Maybe they've finally given up, but I doubt it.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Joe Paterno was a creep and got what was coming to him. I was just commenting on how lacking the outrage in this thread was. You guys are barely whipping yourselves into a hate-filled frenzy.

I thought the same thing. 54 comments on a penn state thread? Rejoice, penn staters, the news cycle has moved on.

For the record, I find the idea that JoPa was so obsessed with football that he just didn't care about anything but the next week's game almost as damning as the idea that he willfully covered up child abuse to protect his reputation. I also think it pretty likely - you don't do all that JoPA did without being one obsessive motherfarker with a bad case if tunnel vision. I would buy the idea that Sandusky's grievances were so far out of the zone of things JoPa cared about (winning football games) that They just didn't register as things he gave a damn about.

If true, it would mean that the NCAA was precisely right when it cited "cultural problems" at penn state, i.e. a university with blinders on, and a culture where football comes before everything else. And JoPa isn't less guilty in this - he's the damn prototypical model for the whole lot of Penn State fans.

So in other words, Paterno really didn't have any motive to defend Sandusky, other than because football.

And people wonder why I call for the NCAA death penalty (or, failing that, a court/executive order along the same lines).

If you asked one of the kids if Paterno NOT saying a word was a crime I think they'd say yes. Also the justice system.

What would you tell the kids? Paterno was a hero who kept quiet because of football?
