You should hear about the amount of space they wasted in the post office because Homer refused to tip his mailman at Christmas

2012-08-21 01:50:02 PM
Should have gone with Pogs.

2012-08-21 01:52:24 PM
Maybe a half price sale is in order

2012-08-21 01:54:40 PM
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Postal Service wasted $1.2 million in printing costs by selling less than a one-third of the 1 billion commemorative stamps of The Simpsons, Bloomberg news reports.

That's not very much for the USPS. Usually they like to target their waste numbers a little higher.

2012-08-21 01:54:43 PM
I would have gone with a "D'oh", perhaps in a pun form such as "Guess how much D'oh the USPS wasted"

2012-08-21 01:54:51 PM
How long was postage 44 cents? A week? Week and a half?

2012-08-21 01:55:23 PM
I'd buy them along with the 1¢ stamp.

2012-08-21 01:57:52 PM
Futurama would have sold better.

I actually still have some Simpson Pogs kicking around here so I'm getting a real kick, etc.

Pfft, everyone knows the best Pogs were the Alf ones

/It's Alf! in Pog form

Quick! Someone attach those stamps to collectable coins and on day time television!

2012-08-21 02:34:39 PM
If they had included Barney, Mo, Burns, Hans Moleman, Comicbook Guy, Grandpa and Jasper they would have sold out.

Who wants a freakin' Maggie stamp?

I only recently learned that stamps are now 45 cents.  I mail so rarely, that its hard to pay attention.  However, I've been mailing stuff for 44 cents all year.  Nothing ever got returned.

Holy crap, I didn't even realize that. Nice catch.

Just recycle them into "Family Guy" stamps a few years later.

I think you can use them within a headline, just not at the end

So just get Paul Anka to write a jingle and they'll fly off the shelves.

Physical mail and The Simpsons -- two things that are way, way past their prime.

consider this: I cashed out my 401k and put it all in forever stamps.

Couldn't they get the 44 cent and just accept them as valid postage? Wouldn't that be better than throwing them away?

/it's an ad, still ain't gonna move

2012-08-21 05:44:49 PM
What they need to do is sell the stamps for the 44 cents each and allow that postage to actually be valid.

2012-08-21 05:45:47 PM
Simpsons did it!

Ay caramba. The Simpsons don't have a holy cow, man.

2012-08-21 05:46:56 PM
By the way, "Holy cow?" Shouldn't that somehow be more like "Don't have a cow?" Or even possibly "USPS forced to eat Bart's shorts" or... something actually related to the Simpsons?

The technology mainly detects the presence of a stamp or not, not the denomination.

2012-08-21 05:48:10 PM
How is something collectible if there's 1 billion of them?

2012-08-21 05:48:15 PM
All collectible stamps should be printed as "forever" stamps, where they are good for first class postage regardless of what the price of stamps are today. I don't know why the post office bothers to print anything other than their "forever" stamps.

2012-08-21 05:48:25 PM
It's a shame this money was wasted, and that the stamps passed expiration, and now cannot be sold. I guess they'll have to burn them, as now they have no value whatsoever.

2012-08-21 05:49:05 PM
I bought one pack. Then they were gone. No more to be bought. Then got desperate and used them with one cent stamps.

I love the post office, but come on. Print commemorative stamps as forever stamps.

2012-08-21 05:50:52 PM
I told them. I told the USPS they should print "Worker and Parasite" stamps instead.

But did they listen to me? No.

2012-08-21 05:50:58 PM
So they release a stamp that isn't a Forever Stamp, which means the only people who are going to buy it are philatelists.

Then they're caught off guard when only philatelists buy it?

/only commenting so I can use the world "philatelist."

Yep.

We have Pixar forever stamps now.

USPS has been thwarted by idiot theoreticians. Ya need mail, sometimes, you wanna send stuff!

//req'd to over-fund

2012-08-21 05:54:01 PM
I just mailed some bills the other day using Simpson stamps that I bought at the post office a few months ago. They look exactly the same as the ones in the article. I have no idea if they were $.44 or $.45 stamps. The bills didn't come back, so I guess that's a good sign?

2012-08-21 05:54:06 PM
You would think that these would've sold out quickly.....15 years ago.

Nezu Chiza: What they need to do is sell the stamps for the 44 cents each and allow that postage to actually be valid.

So the USPS can turn a $1.2 million loss into a $7 million loss?

2012-08-21 05:56:35 PM
a team of R&D eggheads at the 3M Company worked with the USPS for 13 years to perfect the adhesive backed stamps.

Well, they are commemorative stamps, after all.

2012-08-21 05:57:52 PM
The STUPIDEST thing the USPS ever got involved in was 1. Sponsoring Lance Armstrong (who in France is using the US Postal Service??) and 2. these stupid tie-in stamps. You KNOW the studios are wanting a significant cut for every stamp sold, and that reduces any real income the USPS would make.

Just get back to delivery the mail and selling stamps, get rid of the merchandizing crap, and maybe, just maybe, the USPS might get back in the black again.
