Imagine my confusion when I moved to Texas and saw all the aTm symbols. I thought either people were proud of Automatic Teller Machines, or Asynchronous Transfer Mode or the definition you came across.

"Grisanti recently sent out a mailing. Side one bore the recipient's address and two lines, "Senator Mark Grisanti: Protecting Your Tax Dollars," and "Stamping Out Taxpayer Abuse." Side two bore a large photo of a New York State electronic benefit card, like those used by public assistance recipients. The sole message of the mailing was that Grisanti was one of the co-sponsors of a bill to stop welfare recipients from using their benefit cards to make ATM withdrawals at "places like liquor stores, casinos and strip clubs" and stop welfare recipients from using their cards for "free" "cigarettes," "alcohol," "strip clubs" [sic.] and "lottery tickets."

Use your welfare card, get a free strip club!

I don't think that's actually possible. ATM logic doesn't have that type of reasoning built in. Even if it did, all the affected businesses would simply move the ATM to whatever the minimum required distance is from the establishment.

They'd have to reprogram the ATMs to not accept welfare cards and then enact a law saying that "immoral establishments" have to use those machines.

Which would do nothing but inconvenience everyone. People on welfare would find an ATM to get cash from another location and then pay in cash.

What I can't stand about this bullshiat is that the GOP feels, once again, that they have the moral superiority and authority to push their brand of morality on the rest of us.

No no, it's the Christian brand of morality, because this is a Christian country. And you know how Jesus felt about those farking poor people.

This sort of thing came up in Mass recently as lawmakers wanted to update the EBT system so that they would not be accepted at tattoo parlors or jewelers. It got vetoed, but almost everybody saw this as a common sense improvement to the system... what is the argument against this sort of thing? Unless it's the sort of thing where the amount of time and money spent enacting the policy would outweigh any benefits being spent at these places...

Most odd.

It costs a ton of money and resolves a problem that's nearly nonexistent.

Pretty much this. There's a lot of things that would be great to do if it took no effort or money to implement, but when you look at the hoops you have to jump through, many end up simply not worth it.

1) It hurts small business owners if it actually works
2) It's near impossible to implement
3) There are very trivial work-arounds rendering all the work done for (2) ineffective

The great thing about this story is that NY has been compelled to pass this bill by the Federal government:

"If New York fails to comply, the State will forfeit $120 million in federal Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) funds."

Look at us Republicans! We're pro-Government!

It's a skit from the raunchy, R-rated movie 'Clerks 2'. They make the joke that one should never go ATM, which stands for 'Ass to Mouth', during sex.

FTA: "In extreme cases, laid off workers forced to go on welfare could, theoretically, be forced to do their old jobs as scantily compensated and societally denigrated welfare recipients."

Think about that sh*t for a minute. You work for the city, state or county, 25 of service, good pay, benefits, pension, less than five years to retirement. Some governor/ state senator/ mayor (probably republican) who might have been in high school when you started working there decides to get a wild hair up his ass and cut your job, along with thousands of others. No retirement, no pension, no paycheck, no medical, nothing.

Having no other choice after your unemployment runs out in this sh*t economy, you apply for welfare benefits. You receive them after nearly starving to death, but with many caveats, one of which is that you must perform government service without added compensation for transportation or other costs for your labor. You're doing your old job for nothing more than food and rent money.

You then find out that the indentured servitude you'll be performing is the job you were sh*tcanned from a year ago. The politician that did this to you finishes his term and becomes a lobbyist at the state capital for a fat six figure salary.

It's amazing that more politicians haven't been shot who do things like this.

People may be paying strippers with food stamps. You heard it here - there may be tens of people out there who may be using food stamp dollars to make it rain on a stripper. I just found out that a single person with no medical expenses can get up to $16 a month in food stamps, and all he has to do is make less than $1723.00 a year! And he might decide to spend that $4 a week AT A STRIP CLUB.

Now, I know you don't want your hard earned dollars going for some other guy to look at boobies. You work hard for your money. That is why I want you to give the government a lot more money. If even ten men a week spend their $4 at a strip club, that is $120 a month of tax payers' hard earned dollars being paid out to let some poor guy look at fake boobies. That's $1440 a year, and that's just not right. That's why we need you to dig deep and spend millions to prevent that from happening.
