I'm sure anti-abortion activists prefer the term "pro-life" but that doesn't make it inaccurate to call them what they are.

"Undocumented immigrant" = resident alien who left his/her ID at home.

"Illegal aliens" = everyone who entered the country unlawfully, or who has overstayed a visa.

I tell you it's no fun being an illegal alien.

I feel better with the name change. Maybe we could do this for other things? "Mayors Against Undocumented Firearms" sounds much less threatening.

FTFA: ""By saying illegal, they're assuming that we broke a criminal law," said Jackeline Saavedra, 27, of Bay Shore, a Touro Law Center student who identified herself as undocumented. "Not everybody enters illegally."

Ummm am I missing something here? I always thought that if you didn't have proper documentation for whatever you are doing that it was illegal? you know like breaking the law? Cause if thats not true then I'm dropping that scam called insurance and just be undocumented.

If they weren't illegal we wouldn't be a nation in need of immigration reform. Sorry a word used to accurately describe your violation of US immigration law offends you.

I still find it hilarious how manic people became about illegal aliens as soon as Barack Obama became president.

"Illegal Immigrant" is not a dirty word. Its not racist, its not sexist, and it does not make fun of one's religion.

As a noun. "Illegal u-turn" doesn't, but calling another person an "illegal" means I know I'm probably going to hate everything the person saying it has to say on the matter.

Or it could just mean that they entered the country by means contrary to law. You're reading too much into it.

As a legal immigrant, it makes me feel bad inside when people are here illegally.

Nope. It's not a crime to be a removable alien in the US.

If you are in this country without citizneship (alien) and entered this country against the law (illegal) you are an illegal alien. It's not a term of derisivness, It's a term of fact. This is simply a political correctness method of forcing people to accept those who have broken the law. Well it's not gonna work with me! I'm sick and tired of people trying to use terminology to push a clearly incorrect point. If you are in my country illegally, get out! Come back when you learn to do things the RIGHT way! The Iranian that owns the grocery store down the road from me went through hell to get here legally. It's not fair others just slip in when he had to work his ass off.

For fark's sake. What about calling them "illegal" is racist? Let's just call a spade a spade.

Wait. That didn't come out right.

I guess these days if anyone says anything you disagree with, you just simply call their remark "racist" and be done with it. Unless, of course, you are white. Then everything you say is racist from the get-go.

No more inaccurate to eschew "pro-choice" for the same reasons. Unless your argument is that "pro-life" can be pilloried as a term for their stances outside abortion but "pro-choice" cannot be.

I seem to recall there is a distinction between something like "stayed after student visa expired" and "never had documentation at all" but I might have imagined it.

Illegal Alien.
Undocumented Migrant worker.
It isn't rocket science.
And it doesn't matter what nation, or culture they come from. Even the nice Canadians can be illegal aliens.

Yes, you are missing something. If a person enters the country legally, then overstays his visa, he has not committed a criminal act.

2012-08-21 02:19:27 PM
It wasn't that long ago that the news outlets were talking nonstop about an Illegal Elian.

I am one of the libbiest libs that ever libbed, but if I went to another country and, after living there quietly for several years, suddenly decided that my "rights" were being trampled on and that I needed to be treated like a citizen, guess what would happen? I'd probably be deported the next week, if not thrown in jail in that country. You know why? Because I was ILLEGAL.

2012-08-21 02:20:05 PM

Nytfall: give me doughnuts: "Undocumented immigrant" = resident alien who left his/her ID at home.

"Illegal aliens" = everyone who entered the country unlawfully, or who has overstayed a visa.

It's actually a little more subtle and complex than that. It is perfectly legal to remain here if you overstayed your visa under certain circumstances, mostly involving legitimate applications for extensions. (But it would be illegal for the same person to leave and re-enter even while the application is being processed.)

2012-08-21 02:20:17 PM
I'm no longer a drug dealer. Please refer to me as an undocumented pharmacist.

Oh for fark's sake. Calling someone a drug dealer probably makes them feel bad too - I guess under "illegal immigrant" math, they should be called alternative medication distributors?

If you are here contrary to the laws of this country, you have broken the law and are here illegally. I don't care that you'd rather that not be the case, but that's not your decision to make. Go home if you don't like it.

Yes, you are missing something. There are many things that are not legal -- i.e., "illegal" -- that are not crimes, including being a non-citizen residing in the U.S. without the U.S. government's permission. This the reason "illegal" is a poor choice of words for describing undocumented immigrants. While accurate from a technical legal standpoint, it confuses people who think everything "illegal" is a crime.

///Parking violations = illegal but not a crime
//Lease clauses that violate landlord-tenant laws = illegal but not a crime
/there are many others, these are examples that come readily to mind

2012-08-21 02:20:29 PM
If you are here in violation of the Law... you are acting illegally. You are an "Illegal".

A person who commits murder is a murderer, not an undocumented offender.

Dear Senor Canales,

I challenge you to find anyone of voting age who is unaware of the topic of illegal immigration.
