If we're going to eat them, can we at least treat them a little humanely first?

Do we all have to watch "Temple Grandin" a few more times before we get the message?

For the most part they are. Stories like this, while they get the most attention, are the exception not the rule

That being said, assuming the video is accurate, I really hope that any USDA personel that were stationed that the plat get fired, part of their job is to prevent stuff like this and they failed badly

The video clips showed some cows with udders swollen so large they could not keep their legs underneath them.

I have the weirdest boner right now.

That's probably because you are subconsciously thinking of Jenny Agutter (as opposed to cow udders).

I also thought it was a good reference. Nicely done Sanctuary-mitter!

Sheesh, if they're having that much trouble slaughtering the cows, why don't they just send a Sandman after them instead?

I think the undercover investigator for Compassion Over Killing, should compensate the slaughterhouse if the USDA can't find any evidence of sick cows.

When I think of what that person may look like, I see this:

But there are just a few scant moments of the Farrah Fawcett, so fleeting that one could even miss her, or mistake her for any of the countless feathered-haired blonde babes of the latter-1970's.

Farrah Fawcett never did anything for me except soak up space in the color sections of TV Guide, space that could have been used for more Erin Gray. Ordinary.

I thought of that, too. But I was confused by this:

"The footage shows animals bleeding and thrashing after being repeatedly shot in the head with a pneumatic gun in unsuccessful efforts to render them unconscious for slaughter."

I was under the impression that the pneumatic gun killed, and didn't just render it's target unconscious. It certainly didn't just knock people out in that movie. Of course, cattle probably have thicker skulls.

Central Valley Meat Co complains that "We were extremely disturbed to be informed by the USDA that ... our plant could not operate based upon a videotape that was provided to the department by a third-party group that alleged inhumane treatment of animals on our property".

Only that ain't what happened.

That videotape prompted the USDA's Office of Inspector General to send investigators who found evidence of "egregious inhumane handling and treatment of livestock."

The videotape didn't get you shut down, your business practices did.

yes and no, the initial method to reder the animal unconcious is also generally sufficient to kill them (be it electroshock, captive bolt gun, or something else) but they aren't considered actually dead until they are exsanguinated

If we eliminate beef from our diet, as the animal rights activists would require, we will have to turn to soylent green for proper nutrition. And it would seem logical to start production using animal activists.

I'm okay with ending all animal medical research as long as they become our first round of test subjects.

"Logan's Run" deserves a remake because such an awesome story deserves equally awesome special effects.

I am appalled by the USDA. They don't shut down bad puppy mills either. they warn them before they go over there. So this surprises me.
