If he was murdered, life insurance pays out to the family. If he just jumped, it doesn't. They have a financial interest in it not being a suicide.

False. There's a 2 year suicide clause in insurance policies when you are awarded a policy. After the 2 year "probationary" period, the insured can off themselves however they'd like, and their beneficiary will receive the full proceeds.

Maybe she was the reason he jumped.

This. I'm 100% sure that was the case for my father.

Cybernetic: Onkel Buck: Blue Water Bridge gets a few jumpers a year, some of them live

Ditto for the Coronado Bridge in San Diego:

A shipmate and I saved a young woman from jumping from the SD-CBB around 1988. Not sure how it looks now but at the time there was just a K-rail of sorts between the road and the abyss. She parked mid-span in her green VW Bug and was straddling the K-rail when we drove by. My shipmate talked her down, and shortly after the cops showed up and she started weeping. Never saw her again or heard if she regained her will to live.

Incidentally, isn't the SD-CBB second only to the GGB in number of suicides? I heard that statistic some time ago.

Third, behind the GGB and the Aurora bridge in Seattle that crosses the ship canal. They put up a new fence on that one, though, so it may have changed. Jumpers there got 0 sympathy as it mucked up traffic for hours.

Thanks, man. I thought Kirk Douglas was in it, and he is, but I didn't know the director, and I kept searching for 'Big Top' and 'Big Tent', I was sure there was a circus theme in the title. I was way off. Thank you for finding it.

(cont'd) and I was right! sort of.

FTFImdBTrivia
When the film was released, it got bad reviews and lost money. The studio, without Billy Wilder's permission, changed the title to "The Big Carnival" to increase the box office take of the film. It didn't work. On top of that, Billy Wilder's next picture Stalag 17 was a hit and Billy Wilder expected a share of the Stalag 17's profits. Paramount accountants told him that since this picture lost money, the money it lost would be subtracted from the profits of Stalag 17.

dkimball: He probably couldn't stand looking at his Ugly Wife

She has very noticeable bolt ons in many photos, and her eyes are crooked from bad plastic surgery.
The beauty or ugliness of his wife is meaningless anyway. Dude felt he had no way out, and no one was going to help save him (like Botox Queen could, he's saving her, she's not in any way capable of saving him; but some other folks don't know the support networks they have at home, the pain is too great). So he jumped.

raptusregaliter: OKObserver: What a jerk! Greedy SOB obviously did not love his kids or he wouldn't have done this. With that said, I am looking forward to seeing the video.

My mother's cousin had a golden life - the best life money and an ambitious father could buy. Ivy League for both undergrad and law school, was a prominent lawyer in L.A., chairman of this and that, civic leader galore, and was cruising with a nice wife, three kids, and a career that got him into investment management where he had more money than he knew what to do with.

Then he ran into something he could not negotiate with, buy off, or bully into submission: Lou Gehrig's Disease. Instead of coping, he blew his brains out. His sons were still in college, his daughter still in high school - the pain must have been unimaginable. The cousin's charmed life proves that money and power just isn't everything, and so it also was with Tony Scott.

This text is now purple: consider this: This case is taking a turn for the strange. His family has come out saying that he didn't have brain cancer or any other serious medical concerns, but close friends are saying that he did have cancer and had had operations in the past to remove tumors.

What's mysterious?

If he was murdered, life insurance pays out to the family. If he just jumped, it doesn't. They have a financial interest in it not being a suicide.

Most insurance companies will pay on suicide if you've had your policy over 2 years. They want to stop people from signing up, then offing themselves in the heat of the moment.

Yes, I looked into whether or not my family would get paid if I wasn't successful in making it look accidental...

cptrios: protectyourlimbs: Yeah people, show some class to someone who decided to make a public spectacle of themselves before taking the chicken way out in public and possibly traumatizing bystanders in one last fatal attention whore moment that caused taxpayer resources to be wasted...

Well what the hell, I'll bite on this one too.

1. In this day and age, all of those "traumatized bystanders" were almost certainly standing there with their camera phones pointed at Scott. It's not like he landed on the pavement in front of an elementary school. (Though in some cases that might not be so bad either.)

2. Is anyone else as sick as I am of this "coward's way out" thing? Yes, if your girlfriend dumps you and you commit suicide because you think things are never going to get better, that might apply - though it really makes you more of an idiot than a coward. But if you do get diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor (and yes I know that's been debunked here)? Is your philosophy there really "Go out like a man, you big pussy. Wither away in a hospital bed in intense pain while you undergo insane treatments that make you sicker and your family has to watch you disintegrate before their eyes. WOLVERINES!" ?

Thanks...

1) So you know that all the bystanders were just horrible human beings with cameras waiting to catch a suicide and nobody (including people taking pics) could be affected negativly by this guys actions that called for him to commit suicide in a PUBLIC place?

2) I dont think he is a coward for killing himself, I think he is a coward for having to make it public, a lot of things cause suicidal tendencies over the im just sad cause of this moment reasons, imbalances cause disorders that cannot be fixed by "get over it cupcake" treatments, hell now even medicine to fight depression causes suicidal thoughts...

I guess my short answer to 1 & 2 would be contingent on what details you know about this that I dont, but unless I am missing something, even though I dont agree with people who took the pics, and wouldn't myself, the guy committed suicide over a public bridge with nobody elses best interests or safety in mind, I am not saying good he killed himself, just that you cant condemn those who took the footage

To answer some questions posed in this thread:

- Why didn't people drop their cameras and try to stop him instead? A) Witnesses said they thought he was some extreme sports fanatic. He was dressed in athletic wear. B) You haven't seen the videos yet, so you don't know if they were close enough to do anything. C) He supposedly climbed and jumped - no hesitation for people to say anything to him. Most close witnesses were driving in cars -- it's not a bridge where people are just milling around on foot.

- Questions about the effectiveness of the bridge's fence are moot because he was an avid rock climber. Not your usual jumper.

And hell yes I would sell the video of I had it. He went out in the most public way possible.

IIRC, the rescuers were digging a tunnel/shaft to get to the guy's trapped legs. What did the newspaper guys do to slow them down?

The guy killed himself in a very public way in a very public place. If someone has video or photos of it they deserve to make a couple bucks off it. Sort of ironic.

Also,

My backyard bridge has a suicide attempt or two every year. ALL are successful.

Kirk Douglas (aka the newspaper guy) had the rescuers drill a shaft through the top of the mountain (which went against the advice of the driller as it would take much longer to reach the trapped man) rather than tunneling though the entrance. He wanted to prolong the rescue effort in order to milk the tragic situation for all the newspaper coverage he could get.

Hack Patooey: theirs's

Theirs

Theirs is the third person plural possessive pronoun - it replaces "their" + noun.

Is this yours or theirs?

He found a book - is it theirs?

I can't find my keys, but theirs are on the table.

Theirs is a better idea.

Theirs is over here.

Their's

Though you may see their's written even by native speakers, it is incorrect. Theirs should never have an apostrophe.
