Oddly subby, one of my dogs does occasionally chase her tail and goes through periods of licking and chewing on her paws until they are raw.

(Though I think the latter is an allergy to something we walk through in the morning, since at the same time her belly will also get very red. I've taken to wiping her paws and belly down with a wet washcloth after our walks. Seems to help.)

As a result, they conclude that by studying tail chasing in dogs researchers may be able to better understand obsessive-compulsive disorder among humans.

Perhaps now I'll finally find some relief for my compulsion to chase tail.

my dog Carmine definitely has OCD - he has a number of things he has to do each night that can only be described as rituals.

Example, when I come to bed (even though the wife has usually been in bed for an hour or more), he runs to the head of the bed and waits for one of us to open up the covers so he can go down by our legs. He won't do this until I come to bed, if I'm out of town for the night, the ritual doesn't happen.

Once under the sheets, he scratches feverishly on the bed with his front paws for a minute or two, then he lays down. He lays there for 5 minutes or so, at which point he gets too hot and then comes back out.

1) Dog chases tail every once in a while on a lark, or because it's kinda fun, or there's something that itches.
2) People see dog chasing tail, think it's funny, give dog attention.
3) Behavior is reinforced, dog chases tail more, people give more attention, rinse, repeat.

Where's my science grant?

Our dog has her bed on the floor on my side of the bed. Every morning she wakes up and starts licking herself, which makes that licking noise. Trying to get the last few minutes of sleep with that cooter smacking noise is difficult at times.

Mine does the same, but I was told that it's her way of calming herself. A fidget, if you will. I wish she wouldn't chew her paws so much.

Chasing her tail though, that's hilarious. I'll watch her do that all day long. Especially on a freshly polished wood floor.

That's not funny at all. There's something wrong with that cat. It was probably abused. In any event, that's not the kind of cat you would want, since it will eventually lash out at you.

My Cane Corso has a docked tail. I suppose she might chase it because it's forever out of reach, but the vet says it's because her delicious and fragrant anal glands are due for expressing.

Mmm. Anal glands.

My sister's dog does this too, he's certainly neurotic.

Mine used to chase his tail when he was a pup, but I'm pretty sure he only did it because it made me laugh... chase tail, chase tail, chase tail; look up, is mom laughing? I laugh too; chase tail, chase tail, chase tail...

Is it a Jack Russel mix? My dog also waits for us to open the covers so she can go down and scratches the bed while growling (make an angry bed). She sleeps down there all night, though.

Neighbor's dog has a toy. I stand near, dog growls, I stand still, dog growls louder, I start to ease away. In a flash dog bites my foot. So lightly there was not the slightest mark.

I move away, the dog lies down with toy. Leg comes up like going to scratch, starts growling - bites own foot. Lightly I guess. Repeat.

Sooo first we have cats begging for food, aka ACTING LIKE CATS, pegged with a special condition. And now we have dogs who chase their tails, aka ACT LIKE DOGS, pegged with a special condition.

Hooray, let's start over-diagnosing and over-medicating our pets like we have our society!

My husband's cat that does the same thing when she gets excited about anything. No history of abuse as far as I know, and she's never lashed out at either of us. Cats are just insane by default.

I also have a cat that likes to attack his own tail, and that will sometimes involve chasing it. Pretty sure it's just a game to him.

I thought it was funny. Likely not abused either. Likely just very itchy and having a spaz about it.
