I was drinking Main Street Black Cherry Cola before it was cool.

I don't think it's hipsters doing it as much as companies wanting to get the most out of their lesser known brands.

/Sun Drop is finally available outside of the Carolinas. Keen.

Cheerwine? I guess that means eastern North Carolina will no longer be the only place that drinks it in bulk. Or maybe it's western NC that likes that stuff? I can't remember.

It's probably a Southern obsession with sweet stuff in general. *shrug*

Makes sense. It was just strange to see two posts in a row citing Carolina and their love of home grown soda.

A lot of the sodas were initially formulated in the south.

Cheerwine, Mountain Dew, Pepsi, Coca Cola, Nehi...

I just want to say that Moxie tastes like shiat. Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola and Moxie Cola all started off in the 19th century as patent medicine. The problem is, only Moxie Cola decided to continue tasting like patent medicine into the 21st century.

The user can't even spend 10 seconds to explain what it is about the person they don't like.

I only know about Moxie because I read Stephen King books. Might explain things if it's scary-bad.

What do you mean "finally outside of the Carolinas"?..... I thought it was a Wisconsin/Minnesota regional soda... we had it up there at least since the 70s & 80s.

We just got this in Johnson City, TN courtesy of Pepsi. I haven't tried it yet but I hear it's disgusting. It's a malt beverage, so basically malt liquor with no alcohol with some lime flavored syrup added.

My regional drink of choice

On a side note, I had a homemade apple pie soda from a hipster soda cart in Chattanooga a couple weekends ago that was weird but good

Yes because it takes a hipster to refuse to choose between Coke and Pepsi. Just like we all have to choose between Republican and Democrat.

I'll just sit back with my RC Cola and thumb my nose at you.

I'm curious how the JC Gold tastes. It just sounds kind of nasty.

On a side note, my parents and extended family all live in Johnson City and I lived there a while growing up, so I have a bit of a soft spot for that town.

Foxon Park Ginger Ale is damn good. We have something called Ale81 here which is a local ginger ale. It is locally popular but I think it tastes like flat ginger ale.

A favorite of mine that is just now getting distributed in Louisville. If you keep the bottle at just the right temperature, when you open it, the top freezes and you have to drink the soda through a slush. Also amazing when mixed with bourbon.

As a fellow Johnson Citian, I highly approve of your drink choices. Having a red Dr. Enuf later. Haven't tried that MD yet.

Cane sugar. Soda just tastes better with real sugar.

There's a horrid Safeway near me that sells Mexicokes in glass bottles for 99 cents. Pop one of those in the freezer, let freeze until things *just* start to slush, and....

Pure heaven on a hot summer's day.

/Now if someone would please start making actual Nuka-Cola, I think I'd throw all my money at you. (Preferably without the radiation).

Ale-8-One is the best! I got introduced to it by a Kentucky friend of mine. When I lived in Tennessee, there was a gas station owner in Pegram, just west of Nashville, who would go up and buy something like 50-100 cases of the glass bottles at a time and re-sell them since there was no distributor in the area. I'd trek the 30 miles or so from where I lived to go buy a case or two at a time. Unfortunately, his place was near the Harpeth River, so it flooded in the May 2009 floods, and I guess he cashed out at that time and sold the place to someone else who re-opened it.

For the record, you have to drink Ale-8-one cold for the best flavor. Also drink it when you get a sinus infection, something about it or the carbonation provides the best temporary relief for that awful mucus feeling you get in your throat with those things.

Was tempted to go down that way for my vacation time just to pick up a whole bunch of that stuff. Guess I'll have to find a way to coax my Kentucky friend east again at some point to bring me some, since no soda is worth the shipping costs to have the company ship it.

Oh, and if you get heartburn easily, beware! I love drinking it, but that stuff also gives me a wicked case of heartburn for some reason.

Speaking of old, off-brand soda's, I've found a few references, but no photos on the internet of Mickey Rooney's old Watermelon Soda... I recall it being sold in Snapple-like glass bottles in the mid-late 80s.

I would nearly pay someone some cash money to get a photo up of an old bottle of that.
