I am rather surprised he's lost so much support from GOP. Usually they'll double down when one of their own is getting flack for saying something particularly retarded.

They know rape is one of those subjects that they shouldn't even mention, especially in an election year. They have their own viewpoints on abortions and rape that differs from what a majority of Americans believe, but they know better than to let it be known.

The outrage over this is 10x worse than Chik-Fil-A or a celebrity (Whoopi) saying something. This douchebag is running for public office and is going to represent the people, Chik-Fil-A and Whoopi are private citizens. This needs to get 10x the media exposure because it is way more dangerous than a stupid non-politician saying something stupid.

It doesn't matter. Republcians NEVER admit fault in what they say or do, and any attempt to try and make it out to be something is met with deflection and/or retaliation.

This is unique in that regard.

I just want someone to ask him how did he misspeak. I know they are pointing at the "legitimate" part of his quote...but the guy said a woman's body shuts down when she's getting raped, so she can't get pregnant. THAT'S THE OUTRAGEOUS PART. The "legitimate rape" part is bad, but the other part is 10x worse.

Especially when you're crafting legislation to limit women's access to medical care on that basis.

2012-08-20 06:28:49 PM
No, what happened is that the "War on Women" line was finally starting to fade into the background. Obama was hoping to rekindle it by having Sandra Fluke at the convention, which the Republican Party has undoubtedly been spending days and weeks disciplining its rank and file to speak absolutely nothing about and just let her entire appearance be a quick splash and fade. But now they can't do that anymore. They'll be dispatching Cheney with a shotgun soon.

If we're going to have 10,000 Akin threads a day, can we at least have his name spelled right?

That's because Akin is inexorably tied to Ryan for the "Its Not Rape If You Don't Punch Her in the Face Act of 2009" that they co-sponsored together.

If Akin stays in the race he is going to poison the entire ticket down to the root.

The GOP was thiiiis close to taking the Senate so this race was going to be a national story about McCaskill losing.
Now it's a national story about the Republicans' War on Women.

And this: How Todd Akin And Paul Ryan Partnered To Redefine Rape

OMG I love that dog picture.

I think Hobodeluxe was referring to the moves made by Ohio's GOP to limit voting hours to only work days/hours (like M-F from 8-5 or whatever) and not making voting available on weekends and nights because lots of black people like to vote at those times and we can't have that because SOCIALISM or something.

I have to think, at some point in the last 2 days someone high up in the GOP has called this guy and smacked him.
"Hey Todd, it's Billy JoeBob from the National Party Headquarters. Hear there's a bit of a dust-up. Just for one question for ya, Todd. Are you. A FARKIN'. idiot!? Fer farks sake, ya ignorant sod-farker, you couldn't keep your gottdam mouth shut? So seriously, are you a retard, or what? You were cruising on your way to a win, we were about to flip a gottdam Senate seat from blue to red, all you had to do was keep your pig-farking pie hole SHUT. Now you're dragging all this shiat out in the open and you got the new VP candidate tied to your Tea-tard ass. Maybe you should start thinking about spending more time with your family."

Misspeaking is getting "putting food on the table" and "feeding your family" jumbled together so it comes out as "putting food on your family."

Misspeaking is getting "I've been to 47 states" and "there's 50 states total" jumbled together so it comes out to "57 states."

"Women's bodies magically reject rape sperm" is NOT misspeaking, but I'd love to watch this asshole squirm and try to explain it.

Huh.. any particular reason you'd like it to go away? Tired of people repeatedly bringing up the stupidity that repeatedly come out of the mouths of Republicans?

/Repeatedly?

2012-08-20 08:16:08 PM
This was a dealbreaker for him:

John Cornyn (R-TX), chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, called on Akin to "reconsider" staying in the race and then reportedly warned him that if he does stay in, he won't have any financial help from the committee.

But this is the real nail in the coffin:

Around the same time, the super PAC founded by Karl Rove said it had abandoned the Senate race as well, leaving Akin without valuable air cover in his bid to unseat Sen. Claire McCaskill (D).

He should have bailed out yesterday, but there's really no point in him continuing now. The Republicans will still lose that particular election, but they can run somebody more deserving of the office than Akin, like an old shoe, or maybe a robotic ALF doll. It's Missouri, they aren't that red yet; there's no way for him to win the election and no justifiable reason he ever should.
