Murphy, 19, was arrested and charged with discharging a firearm in public from a vehicle.

Sounds like a law meant to punish drive-by's. Wonder what's the sentence for that?

Murphy and his girlfriend said they did not know there was a resident in the area walking his dog at the time.

Oh, well, that's a different story. Next time, be sure to check more closely for bystanders before firing a shotgun in a suburban neighborhood. Right then, off you go...

It's actually a law to stop 'jacklight' poaching: Shooting disoriented deer from a vehicle.

For some reason I read the headline as "Silent Hill". Firing your shotgun there is completely justified.

It's illegal if you do it on purpose. Hard for them to prove. In some states it is illegal to shoot a turkey with a rifle. You have to use a shotgun or bow.

Plain-view doctrine means a warrant was unnecessary. A witness identified the vehicle, and the recovered items were described as sitting on the back seat and on the floor of the front passenger seat: they would have been easily visible when looking through the windows with a flashlight.

(TFA just said 'Jeep'. I'm guessing it was a Cherokee-type (i.e. enclosed) rather than an open Wrangler.)

Also, the charge is "discharging a firearm in public from a vehicle." Perhaps if you invited the turkey into your garage and closed the door, you're allowed to shoot it from your truck?

Turkeys; particularly domesticated turkeys; are not known for their intelligence. Had one bank into my old truck. It bounced on the grill/hood, flew over the windshield, bounced on the roof, bounced on the tailgate and almost landed in the bed.

/ thought about going back for it, but decided that it was not a good idea to eat that particular turkey.

// hit a hawk last week, same scenario; didn't think about going back for it, hawks are vermin

/ if you put seed out, you could probably trap a turkey in your garage; provided your door closes fast

The last time I saw a piece about this on TV, the sting was by the MONTANA Fish and Game Commission. We have a LOT to be humble about, in the south, but jacklighting deer happens anywhere rednecks, guns, pickup trucks and darkness converge.

Wild turkeys are MUCH smarter than their domestic cousins. I had the same thing almost happen...Was traveling 60 in a Suzuki Samurai, and I actually heard his wing feathers go 'tick' against the top of the windshield frame. I have a feeling if I had hit him, he would have ruined my day. Scared the shiat outta me.

I need to find someplace that sells hunting loads in 7.62x39r. No problem finding FMJ, but no one around here seems to stock anything suitable for deer, which seems kind of silly since it has virtually identical ballistics to .30-30.

Yes; the bullet's passage causes the surrounding meat serious trauma. You hit them in the head; you're only out the brain, and you're not supposed to eat that anyway.

/ if you're gonna hunt; you should eat everything you can, use the hide, bones, ect and make sure that the animal's death is as quick as possible; just like the Native Americans did

Get on the google and search "ammo to go". They have literally everything ammo wise you can imagine. It's cheaper too; you can get it shipped directly to you; if you are a consistent customer at an outdoors store, they'll let you order it through them and pick it up there. But; all you really need is a credit card, an address and someone to recieve the shipment.

/ I just looked it up; 7.62x39 soft point starts at 29 cents a round; hollow point starts at 25 cents
