I love cheaply constructed shoes. I know I should stop but I could buy $300 properly constructed boots or 20 pairs of cheap shoes. I get shoes at Payless and they last for like 2 years. If I am doing something dirty I wear $15 rubber boots. I admit that because of my stupid wide feet I have to wear New Balance for athletic endeavors.

I can't bring myself to read the article.

Captain_Ballbeard: Jclark666: I'm just waiting for the hipsters to start rocking these:

[4.bp.blogspot.com image 550x365]

They look homemade, hipsters consume to rebel, don't see it happening.

That's the irony. When the hipsters buy them, they'll be mass-produced but still look like homemade crap. All you really need to do is put an unobtrusive-yet-prominent logo on them and come up with a stupid name, or better, a stupid name that you can astroturf an even stupider nickname for. I'm registering "Zapointos", and seeing how many bitcoins it'll cost me to get 'Point's trending on Twitter. Then I shop Zoey Deschanel rockin' the new line of Zapointos with the "optional" motion-activated iPhone charging capability, and start work on the line of Zapointos-branded accessories to keep your 'Point's from getting caught in the spokes of your fixie.

Ah, but here's the genius. Before building the 'Point's brand, I create a bogus company offering DIY kits for creating Zapointos (minus the unobtrusive-yet-prominent logo). As the 'Point's approach their apex, it quitely comes out that 'Point's have been secretly using these obscure DIY kits to make their shoes. And what hipster can resist having the "real genuine original" article that you've probably never heard of? I start charging more for materials than I was for assembled shoes, and to the same idiots.

The only thing that's holding me back is that I haven't yet found the right white band to bring tribal guarachero to the hipster masses, for the necessary cross-promotion.

Did they really have that many shackles left over from the production runs of My Pet Monster?

That was the actual inspiration for the shoes, as stated by the designer.

Anyone who had a My Pet Monster would immediately recognize the orange plastic chains and purple/gray motif...

But that market is admittedly niche. And without context, "slavery" may be an obvious connection to make.

Not sure I'd ever wear such an item, but I'm sorry the designer got dragged into a race-outrage over misplaced semiotics.

Holy shiat, I truly did not know that. That is the first thing that came to mind when I saw a picture of those things. I thought they were homebrew at first, made from old MPM shackles.

Now I feel bad for the designer. My Pet Monster, while completely overbombed in Cartoon-Hour TV ads, wasn't terribly popular (I had one. I was the only one I knew who had one. I was so alone...). I can easily see how just about nobody would have gotten the reference.

Is it bad that I now want a pair? I miss my big, rather well-made, gnarly pillow.

I used to walk with a cane because osteoarthritis has left me with very little cartilage in my feet and ankle. Then I was in a play called Trafford Tanzi where I played a wrestler named Dean Rebel. I wore extra-high Converse sneakers in the play. The sneakers gave such amazing ankle support that when worn with my orthodics I no longer need to walk with a cane unless I'm walking very long distances. From now on it's nothing but Converse high-top canvas sneakers for me.

HotIgneous Intruder: DerAppie: Why can't people go around accepting that some people might actually like what they like instead of whining about people stealing it from them?

You sound like you've never had the shiat kicked out of you because of the jacket or shoes you were wearing.

Very true. The only problem is that I was talking about the stealing of ideas and not the stealing of the physical object. As soon as you place an idea in the spotlights you should expect people to adopt it to a certain extent. Whining that they are stealing your culture is retarded.

KrispyKritter: you couldn't handle living in the USA. it's easy to be Japanese living in Japan, or a Kraut living in Germany. you are surrounded by little clones of yourself everywhere and you rarely have to think for yourself. in america we are blessed with people from every race, religion, creed, culture, whatever the fark you want to name it. especially in populated areas. one has to learn and live by respect, tolerance, patience and love. and we do. you wouldn't know about that. your skewed perceptions are based on movies, television and whatever other crap you allow into that beach ball in between your shoulders.

no matter. few athletic shoes look good with lederhosen.

So what kind of shoe people is influenced by the choices of entertainment they like?

All "urban" black people like basketball, thus they wear basketball shoes.
Black rappers also like basketball, so they wear basketball shoes.
Black people also like black rappers who also wear basketball shoes.
Basketball shoe wearing is double reinforced by their two most important choices of entertainment and the prominent figures within them.

Do the same with white kids, except white kids are much more prevalent and have much more diverse cross-culture among them.

I have no idea what brand of shoe I am wearing. I'm looking at them right now, and I still don't know.

Shoes do matter on certain occasions, though. The "running shoes" you can buy at the local department store will not protect your feet as well as the nice running shoes you can buy at an athletic store. I never paid more than $20 for shoes until I bought my first nice pair of running shoes, but the nice shoes were worth the extra money because they allowed me to run more than a few miles without my feet swelling up.

username101: The writer doesn't seem to acknowledge that skater shoes (sneakers, typically with a larger lip) are pretty farking common among white teens, more-so or just as much as Converse. I should know, since those were the only shoes I wore from age 12 until last year (I'm now 21). I still primarily wear skater shoes for normal days, and only wear my knock-off Converse for certain occasions.

Back when more choice in sneakers became available -- late 60's to early 70's, most white kids would do just about anything for a pair of suede pumas or nylon adidas. At least where I was. Skater shoes came along much later.

I never claimed we didn't have racism here. The racism we get is pretty straight forward racism. Because the politicians are disinclined to do something about the amount of uneducated and unskilled immigrants that come here, because even 3rd generation immigrants are still over represented in crime stats and unemployment/social benefits stats under represented in education stats or that some neighbourhoods are overrun by youth gangs, which are practically unheard of amongst the native Dutch, isn't helping either. When some group is causing trouble after a night out, do you want to know what ethnicity they are in a disproportionate amount of the cases? Of all the people who have ever threatened me most haven't been white. Is calling out for those problems to be fixed wrong? Or aren't we allowed to demand that the people who want to come here have at least some modicum of respect for our culture or that they behave according to our laws? I know the politicians always scream that we should respect the culture of the immigrants, even if they are actively trying to rewrite Dutch culture. Maybe if they (as a group, not individuals) behaved a bit better most of the outcry that we have now wouldn't exist.

The politicians used to scream racism if you demanded they learned Dutch (which meant that we had people who had been living here for over 10 years and still didn't speak enough Dutch to order a loaf of bread at the baker) or had a minimum level of income before being allowed to bring their family over. Or that it just wasn't in their culture to shake a woman's hand. Or stand up out of respect for a judge. Is it so weird that there is a backlash from the general population when those are the opinions of the people in charge?

/But at least we don't get the "You eat Döner Kebab" or "You are trying to rap" and therefore you are stealing our culture crap.

It's selective in the US. Between blacks and whites, there are racists on both sides. To these racists, you're a race traitor/n-lover/wigger/etc if you're white and adopt something from black culture/date a black person or an Uncle Tom/race traitor/whitebred/etc the other way around. Conversely, adopt something from Mexican culture/date a Mexican and no one gives a shiat.

Obviously, the cause is our inability to let go of history and move on from both sides of the fence for a large group of people, where as the only people that feel that way about Mexican/American relations are the MECHA and the Remember the Alamo types.
