Biv:

Actually, that's exactly what the article said.

swahnhennessy:

She most certainly does acknowledge that:

All this time -- as basketball took dunks in one direction -- white kids had their own sneakers. The Chuck Taylors of the white hipster continued on, but the white-dominated skate culture of the 80s and 90s brought a new kind of sneaker to parking lots and stair railings. The skate shoe had a thick sole, good for gripping the surface of a board. Sometimes it slipped onto the foot, the way Vans do; sometimes it laced up, with elaborate padding and an ankle guard. Like Jordans, it was about athletic performance and cultural performance in equal measure, frequently accompanied as it was by lank sun-blond hair and a Cali drawl.

But it operated in a totally different economy from Jordans. As with Chucks, there are few or no limits placed on the supply of skate shoes. A store might run out of the model you want, if you favor a more elaborate one -- but there's nothing like the artificial pressure sneaker companies put on today's basketball sneaker market. Ultra-limited editions, rare materials, underground hype: All these elements of that market -- a market primarily targeting black youth -- are designed to create a frenzy. They push prices high.

Well fark, I totally missed that bit. It was a damn-long article and I missed the one thing I was skimming to find. I rescind my post and acknowledge my asshattery.

Did they really have that many shackles left over from the production runs of My Pet Monster?

That was the actual inspiration for the shoes, as stated by the designer.

Anyone who had a My Pet Monster would immediately recognize the orange plastic chains and purple/gray motif...

But that market is admittedly niche. And without context, "slavery" may be an obvious connection to make.

Not sure I'd ever wear such an item, but I'm sorry the designer got dragged into a race-outrage over misplaced semiotics.

So why is the former Jay-Z and the latter Dylan?

Um, what "hipster" meant when Bob Dylan was called a hipster and the "hipsters" that converse are associated with are entirely different subcultures that have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with each other, random misinformed article writer guy.

The rest of TFA is similar semi-informed bullshiat with just enough basis in reality to pass for legit while being nothing of the sort, but that was the bit that sort of summed it all up for me.

Is that really a tennis shoe? Or is it street casual? Sure it's not a basketball or running shoe? Maybe a genuine cross trainer?

I wear a size 14 and find that the buyers for the shoe stores think I'm a black basketball player.

Overfiend: I was going to type something about looking forward to racism dying, but I realize racism will never be dead.

You will always have a small percentage of hate filled bigots out there. And of course you have a certain percentage who will never late racism die because it benefits them to be oppressed.

I look forward to the day when we can celebrate our cultural differences and not give a shiat about what color our skin is.

Meh, we'd just find another reason to hate each other. It's in out nature. You just have keep it at workable levels.

You guys are forgetting the group tribalism that permeates far too many ethnicities-and make no mistake, "African-American" is a sub-cultured ethnicity every bit as ethnocentric as other hyphenated Americans. Ive always felt our worse problems aren't due to race, but due to ethnic differences. No one seems to be American unless there's a war or an Olympics.

DerAppie: White people wearing them is co-opting black culture? Why is it always about white people co-opting crap? I remember some MTV show had a class full of black people with sand in their vaginas because some white girl wanted to rap, she was stealing their culture. Don't black people co-opt Chinese culture every time they get take out? Or Italian culture when they eat pizza? Which culture do they co-opt when they waych Hollywood movies?

I'm just glad not to be living in the US, the collective panty twisted mine field that is race relations is just incomprehensible. Why can't people go around accepting that some people might actually like what they like instead of whining about people stealing it from them? If you don't want it to be well known you shouldn't bring it out into public.

Fit like any other pair of shoes, but have the added bonus of being apparently made out of depleted uranium or something. I don't even remember how many years ago I bought them (maybe 2-3?), they look the same. Also, they're the color of dust, so you really can't even tell if they're dusty or not.

Don't worry....

Everyone's a little bit racist
Sometimes.
Doesn't mean we go
Around committing hate crimes.
Look around and you will find
No one's really color blind.
Maybe it's a fact
We all should face
Everyone makes judgments
Based on race.

you couldn't handle living in the USA. it's easy to be Japanese living in Japan, or a Kraut living in Germany. you are surrounded by little clones of yourself everywhere and you rarely have to think for yourself. in america we are blessed with people from every race, religion, creed, culture, whatever the fark you want to name it. especially in populated areas. one has to learn and live by respect, tolerance, patience and love. and we do. you wouldn't know about that. your skewed perceptions are based on movies, television and whatever other crap you allow into that beach ball in between your shoulders.

no matter. few athletic shoes look good with lederhosen.
