Consumer exploitation. Zip-a-dee-do-dah.

I've got a pair of Nikes that I hardly wear...not that I'm afraid of getting mugged, but the damn things are a little narrow for my feet. Nikes are known for that, apparently. But $30 delivered brand new on eBay - hey! You can't beat that.

As for Converse...I've never owned a pair. They just look cheap.

/best pair of shoes I've owned were Doc Martins

All my sneakers are New Balance, because they're the only company that understands shoe width. And they're American made. And I can buy sneakers that fit.

What happened to the Starbury "Stephon Marbury" basketball shoes?  I thought it was pretty neato that he was marketing them as $15 shoes with the idea that every two pairs sold would underwrite a free pair for some needy kid.  Hell I would have bought a pair if I could have found them anywhere.

I stick with Keen and Ecco, personally. Haven't found any 'name brand' shoes like Nike, New Balance, Converse, etc. that weren't complete crap for several years now.

2012-08-20 07:32:49 PM
White people wearing them is co-opting black culture? Why is it always about white people co-opting crap? I remember some MTV show had a class full of black people with sand in their vaginas because some white girl wanted to rap, she was stealing their culture. Don't black people co-opt Chinese culture every time they get take out? Or Italian culture when they eat pizza? Which culture do they co-opt when they waych Hollywood movies?

I'm just glad not to be living in the US, the collective panty twisted mine field that is race relations is just incomprehensible. Why can't people go around accepting that some people might actually like what they like instead of whining about people stealing it from them? If you don't want it to be well known you shouldn't bring it out into public.

/No, I usually do not watch MTV

No cite, just know from working in a shoe store: the majority of the New Balance stock we carried was foreign made. The styles that had great width representation were generally US made.

Well, first his career died big time. Then, the chain he was selling them through closed up shop, so he started selling them online. Now? Not sure, he still may be selling them online

I was going to type something about looking forward to racism dying, but I realize racism will never be dead.

You will always have a small percentage of hate filled bigots out there. And of course you have a certain percentage who will never late racism die because it benefits them to be oppressed.

I look forward to the day when we can celebrate our cultural differences and not give a shiat about what color our skin is.

Well that was the stupidest article that I've ever read.

The writer doesn't seem to acknowledge that skater shoes (sneakers, typically with a larger lip) are pretty farking common among white teens, more-so or just as much as Converse. I should know, since those were the only shoes I wore from age 12 until last year (I'm now 21). I still primarily wear skater shoes for normal days, and only wear my knock-off Converse for certain occasions.

Meh, we'd just find another reason to hate each other. It's in out nature. You just have keep it at workable levels.

She most certainly does acknowledge that:

All this time -- as basketball took dunks in one direction -- white kids had their own sneakers. The Chuck Taylors of the white hipster continued on, but the white-dominated skate culture of the 80s and 90s brought a new kind of sneaker to parking lots and stair railings. The skate shoe had a thick sole, good for gripping the surface of a board. Sometimes it slipped onto the foot, the way Vans do; sometimes it laced up, with elaborate padding and an ankle guard. Like Jordans, it was about athletic performance and cultural performance in equal measure, frequently accompanied as it was by lank sun-blond hair and a Cali drawl.

But it operated in a totally different economy from Jordans. As with Chucks, there are few or no limits placed on the supply of skate shoes. A store might run out of the model you want, if you favor a more elaborate one -- but there's nothing like the artificial pressure sneaker companies put on today's basketball sneaker market. Ultra-limited editions, rare materials, underground hype: All these elements of that market -- a market primarily targeting black youth -- are designed to create a frenzy. They push prices high.
