Akin just saying what Ryan believes and has worked toward in the past is a pretty timely gift to the Obama campaign. They will use it to further the narrative that he is an extremist. Nice of him to say this before republicans are able to define Ryan as some deep thinking policy wonk.

"First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare. If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

i was late to the other party, so i'll get this one started right.

legitimate rape = rape rape.
not-exactly-legitimate rape = 'she was 17? i thought she was 19. you had to be 18 to get into that club anyway.' or 'i woke up in the morning next to this gross slob of a guy and i remember going home with him but oh my god my girlfriends saw me with him i'll never live this down, excceeepppptttt.... OH NO HE RAPED ME! give me attention.'

the female body does have ways to shut down the whole thing. it's call struggling. pulling away. not just laying there and enjoying it.

so, um, the guy's a dick, but he's not an incorrect dick just based on that quote.

In defending his extreme anti-choice position - that a woman who is raped and becomes pregnant should not be permitted to have an abortion, Akin said, "First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare. If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

Yes, it does. One such way is for the female body to walk itself down to an abortion clinic and activate the muscles necessary to say "I want an abortion".

Not to try and apologize for Rep Akin, but is it possible that what they mean is that it is a rare pregnancy that results from rape? Not that only a small percentage of victims get pregnant, but that only a small percentage of total pregnancies result from rape?

Yeah, he's still an idiot, but is it at least possible that he took one fact (very few of the total pregnancies result from rapes) and once "fact" (that women can consciously spontaneously abort fetuses) and mashed them up to produce something that is almost, but not quite, entirely unlike a fact?

He'd be an idiot in two ways - one that believes women have conscious control of their uterii and one that doesn't understand statistics (word the statement of the results VERY carefully so you only support that which the data tells you to), but at least we can trace the error - and hopefully debug it.

// fat chance

The real issue here is why the liberal media is doing all it can to demonize this man who has the courage to speak God's truth to a wicked world.

Go ahead and whine about your First Amendment rights, libs. We have Second Amendment rights, and two is more than one.

Abortion is murder and a slap in the face to the gods that gifted you with this baby. A heathen with that attitude was asking to be raped.

Oh, I get what he said, I'm just wondering if the whole thing is based on a combination of misunderstanding basic statistics and a hilarious misconception* about womens' plumbing.

// well, those and a narrow Conservative American Protestant worldview

1) What does it matter? Whether lots of pregnancies occur from rape or very few, how does that affect the issue?

2) He was arguing that there was no need to provide abortion law exemptions for rape victims because pregnancy rarely occur from rape. His evidence? Some BS science he made up.
