He was sittin on the dock of the bay on one of these hot summer nights, walked into the danger zone, destination unknown -- if the fall didn't kill him, then the water took his breath away.

"Director of Top Gun dead from jumping off of a bridge. Ok, who was the cool kid that went first? "

If by 'better' you mean 'just as crap', then yeah, I agree.

I was really looking forward to Truer Romance

thatboyoverthere: shower_in_my_socks: I preferred "Goose no longer the only one from Top Gun who fell to his death" but that's because I wrote it.

Also, WTF is up with people jumping off of bridges? Just passed cops on a bridge near me last night obviously looking for someone who jumped. Just seems like a bad way to go.

It is. One you got a 50 percent chance of not dying and the impact has less of a chance of killing you then if you hit concrete. Also if the impact doesn't kill you there is a chance of hypothermia/drowing. Also the fall give you time to realize that you want to live.

I once read something written by a guy who jumped off the Golden Gate bridge and survived. He said that the very instant it was too late to not jump, he wished he hadn't done it and realized he wanted to live. Said everyone who has survived that he talked to said exactly the same thing. The whole thing was really quite depressing, especially when you consider how many people spend their last seconds wishing they hadn't jumped.

Just read on Wikipedia that early reports indicate that Tony Scott had inoperable brain cancer. Hey that's a heavy burden to bear. My father died of brain cancer at age 52 in 1972. But there's somewhat more hope today. Ted Kennedy got some quality months.

2012-08-20 01:26:44 AM
I made a sittin on the dock of the bay joke, and now I just read that he may have attempted to jump from a pier earlier today, but was unsuccessful.

If I was as rich and connected as him and I had a terminal illness, I'd die of an opiate overdose while surrounded by a harem of Playboy Playmates.

Interesting to hear and if so, that makes his decision a lot easier to understand. I think I would do the same thing if certain illnesses arose.

Here is the article you're probably referring to. Relevant quote:
I instantly realized that everything in my life that I'd thought was unfixable was totally fixable-except for having just jumped.

If Tony Scott has inoperable brain cancer, that argument probably doesn't apply, though.

Wiki also says his older brother died of cancer back in 1980, so it was in the fam.

Snapper Carr: I was only a fan of 3 of his films (The Hunger, True Romance and Crimson Tide) but that sucks. I have an idea of what his brother and the rest of his surviving family is going through now and it's not pleasant.

I never knew he directed The Hunger until tonight. And I agree those other two are fantastic films.

RIP Action Man.

Hey, people pay good money to experience free-fall. It depends on what's at the bottom. I would want a hard surface for an instant, painless death. Drowning would suck.

2012-08-20 01:38:05 AM

consider this: frostus: The Last Boy Scout

Hate on me if you will, but I liked that movie. The only time in a movie that the villain has met their demise by falling into the rotor blades of a hovering helicopter.

No, I was serious. I liked Last Boy Scout and always hoped we'd see more of their exploits. I thought they made a good team.

That's not on Wikipedia.

I read it on Wikipedia before my Boobies that early reports had indicated that he had inoperable brain cancer. I just checked Wikipedia again. The reports of the inoperable brain cancer have been deleted. Maybe they're checking to see if that information has been confirmed. Either that, or I've become delusional...

I'd kill myself too if I directed Top Gun and ended up driving a fargin Prius.

What is the point of living in Hollywood, making all that money, and driving a lesbian car?

Yeah, and the bridge here where someone apparently jumped last night didn't seem high enough to kill you. Drowning while in excruciating pain from a broken back seems comparable to burning to death on the scale of ways I don't want to die.

Breaking news. A car makes you a man, woman, or gay.

This is what desperate and shallow people actually believe.
