Birtherism is racist (well, Alex Jones is the exception, his birtherism comes from the belief that the NWO is forcing a non-American citizen as President to show the world what they are capable of. Dont ask.) KKK are racist. The pool incident where the black children were asked to leave because they changed the complexion of the pool was racist. Calling a black man "boy" or "son" and the two N bombs, that is racist.

Attacking the President for his position on the political issue of welfare is not racist.

As was covered in the last thread, "welfare reform" and "work for welfare" is a well-accepted dog whistle for racism. If you were paying any attention to politics in the 90s when this issue was last addressed, you'd know that. That was the age of the "Welfare queens" as attack position, which was almost always portrayed as a black single mother.

So, I'm sorry, but publishing an outright lie that accuses the president of getting rid of the work requirement and just giving money away to people on welfare is actually kinda racist. It is not explicitly racist, just as the Willie Horton ads weren't explicitly racist, but everyone knew that an ad showing that Dukakis had furloughed a huge scary black man was a racist ad.

#1, I was born in 83. I barely remember the 80s and only have fond memories '96 and up. Welfare to work was not something I would have noticed at the time.
#2. The content of the advertisement would not have mattered. It could have been a picture of Obama looking tired, and they would still scream "racism"
#3, I am probably looking like an idiot now. I tend to do that more oft than I like to admit. Plus, the fact that I am booted on a Linux live CD without spell check makes me look even more of an idiot.
#4. I hate racist folks. Hell, Birthers are the scum of the earth for me. Those ignorant idiots make me want to puke. But, not every thing is done based upon race. We need to go out there and focus on, you know, real racists: those who chain black men to the back of their truck and drive around till his head falls off, those who deny a promotion because a black person is the candidate, those who do racial profiling in Mall stores when in fact middle aged women are the biggest group that does that.

I mean, I was born in 1987, I just was really political by the late 90s and got into things a few years after this happened. So it's not first-hand memory of the actual welfare reform stuff, it's first-hand memory of the fallout.

"#4. I hate racist folks. Hell, Birthers are the scum of the earth for me. Those ignorant idiots make me want to puke. But, not every thing is done based upon race. See, those type of people are utterly terrible, and everyone agrees with that. But they are also the vast minority. The KKK has like 100 members left. The Aryan Nation is a shadow of its former self. Acts of depraved racist violence still occur, but in lower amounts. But systematic racism still occurs on a daily basis, and that's the kind of racism that is actually hurting people the most these days. It's the kind of racism that is perpetuated not against a single family, but against an entire generation. That's the kind of racism I want to fix. You're never going to convince some people that lynching black people isn't okay, but you can convince people to get rid of unconscious racism, and if not get rid of it, to counteract it. There is no such thing as a "real racist" versus a "fake racist". There's just degrees of racism. Death by a thousand cuts is still death.

Claiming that minorities are lazy people who would rather be "welfare queens" than work is racist. If you know any conservatives and are honest then you would know that the right's opposition to welfare is based in racism.

It's still around, but they changed up the program to the point that you can't remain on it for life. Cash assistance caps out at 5 years, although food assistance can carry on longer.

AirForceVet: /Obviously this ad is to inflame his voting block, even though more whites are on welfare than blacks.

Unfortunately, since the recession started that's no longer true. It still doesn't matter - the "welfare" replacement, TANF, isn't a program like the "old-school" welfare program. People should stop using the word "welfare" because it doesn't accurately describe what federal government living assistance is anymore.

The only real "welfare" left for people is Social Security Disability, which you can get for life.

Conservatives have passed voter laws across the country that will disenfranchise nearly 25% of the African American voters in order to stop a crime that has been committed a dozen times in the last 10 years of voting. But don't call them racist, because you don't have proof.

The largest increases in white supremacy hate groups in a hundred years have tracked consistently with the rise of the tea party movement, but don't call them racists.

Laws implementing (unnecessary) bans on Sharia law and to stop mosques from being built have all come from conservative law makers, but don't call them racists.

Efforts to cut social services like welfare, subsidized school lunches, and medicaid have all come from conservative quarters. But just because implementation of these laws would disproportionately impact African Americans, don't call them racists.

Yes and the Willie Horton ad was a legitimate discussion of penal reform policies in this country.
You're problem is, Lee Atwater, the guy who invented this kind of campaigning and trained Karl Rove, had a "moment of clarity" after being diagnosed with brain cancer and came clean about all of this years ago , and apologized to the the people he'd used the tactics on.

Since he published the playbook for all the world to see, it's a lot harder to claim it doesn't exist or you aren't following it now.

(hint: look up Philadelphia, MS and then tell me if you think it was accidental that Reagan chose there, of all places to announce his run for the presidency\)

Of course we are missing the real topic of debate. Why is Mitt romney against the federal government giving more power to the states in running a program?

If you wanted to up the "derp", you could frame it as Mitt Romney wants the federal government to dictate people's career path like it was done in the Soviet Union.

Good point. This issue of debate is actually something republican governors including Mitt Romney have asked for, and for quite some time. It also holds the state accountable stating they must have an alternative work program which they have proof will be more effective. This is the supposed core of what conservatives state is their belief system.

Yet they take it and twist the whole thing out of context stating that president Obama is gutting the work requirement. They have surrogates like Newt Gingrich spewing it on TV when, and called out they justify the lie by saying that they know in President Obama's heart that is what he would do if he could.

Why? This is not a legitemate policy criticism. The only reason I can think of is to draw anger to the "welfare queen" strawman and divide Americans along racial lines. When I hear the stereotypical story of the welfare recipient driving up to pick up their check in their Cadillac by those who claim to be conservative, the welfare recipient is never a Caucasian. This is a true ad of hatred and division.

Not to mention this is what President Obama gets in return for giving them a policy they wanted. Is there any wonder he has started working around them using executive orders?
