He reminds me of my 88-year-old grandfather, who carved a sarcastic bust of George W. Bush clutching an airplane to his chest and gazing off into the sky heroically, with an American flag painted across his body and a tear running down his eye.

As much as I appreciate the man's service to the world (not just the country) and tremendously respect him for his years as a trial judge (that's a lot of stress I imagine), I don't need an old guy's opinion to know that Romney is a doofus. I pretty much gathered that on my own. And I doubt that he'll sway anyone already supporting him with bad poetry.

And I am also ashamed to admit that I was geeky enough to be really distracted by the vertical aspect of the video format.

And ran for Mass governor while not even a resident.

It is hard to rhyme "Romney".

There once was a man named Romney
Who had a thing for his Mommy

Even that isn't actually a rhyme.

There one was a man named Mitt
Who's economic plan was shiat
He ran with a man named Ryan
Spent most of his commercial time lying
And didn't have enough sense to quit

Stationed in Dutch Harbor?

Poor Dude. He's a hero.

/typical Dutch Harbor Police Blotter (real, not parody):

July 25 21:31 hours -- Officers issued a trespass advisement to a sobbing, intoxicated man who had been asked not to return to the Airport Bar after he began a disconcerting dance inside the restaurant and argued with employees about payouts for scratch cards.

July 26 00:12 hours -- Officer issued a trespass advisement to a no longer sobbing but still intoxicated man whose obstreperous behavior could not be tolerated at the Grand Aleutian hotel.

July 26 1:28 hours -- A now comatose but no longer sobbing inebriate was taken into protective custody after he was found passed out in front of the clinic, where he had tottered for treatment of medical problems which he refused to divulge to medical practitioners.

Is he above criticism?

I get so confused on that because sometimes people have this "status", they've been in the military, or were injured in combat, or somebody related to them died in combat, or died in some other fashion that is generally admired (firefighter, police officer, ect). The point is that when they say something or have an opinion, you are not permitted to be critical of them because HOW DARE you they are (status here)! This can even extend to people based on gender or sexual orientation, but that's a lot less common.

Wait, never mind any of that, because we all know how it works: "How dare you be critical of somebody expressing an opinion liberals like!"

Do we need to do this do-se-do every damn time?

It's confirmation bias writ large - the pro-Romney camp will either swift-boat him or say "Thank you for your service, but I disagree"; and the prObama camp will lionize him or (like Shadowknight said) snark about how it doesn't take a WWII veteran to figure Romney's full of it.

Just like when a military man stands up and voices full-throat support for Sarah Palin because death panels are hiding in the pages of the Korans at your local library.

// well, if they're schizophrenic like that, one would hope that everyone points him toward the thorazine, but you get my meaning

Well clearly, he's actually a scheming Jap sleeper agent, parachuted in during the bombing raids on Dutch Harbor, and only now activated to infiltrate the political process and destroy FDR's chances in the election.

You know how cunning the wily Oriental is, and how hard it can be to tell how old they are.

I genuinely believe that Americans as a whole are finally wising up to the fact that the GOP has been using troops as political chips. There's so much evidence that they don't care, from holding their benefits hostage in a game of chicken with Obama, to the shameful manner in which Iraq/Afghanistan soldiers were woefully under-equipped while private concerns pocketed profits. I genuinely believe that every day, more and more people are seeing these chickenhawks for what they are. That Obama has so expertly trolled the GOP on national security issues is just the icing on the cake.

Unfortunately, they don't write poetry.
