wisewerds: This is a non-story that Politico has sat on for a while.

They just had to throw it out there now to try to distract from Newsweak's anti-Obama issue.

Politico is a joke.

Ambivalence: why are private organizations funding a congressional "fact finding" trip? What facts were they supposed to find?

How oppressed the Jews are and how much more the American military needs to kill anyone that pisses the Jews off because they say so.

FTFA: But Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), who was the senior most GOP lawmaker in Israel on the trip, was so upset about the antics that he rebuked the 30 lawmakers the morning after the Aug. 18, 2011, incident, saying they were distracting from the mission of the trip.

Man, I'll bet he was PISSED. I would have loved to hear the Orthodox Jew ripping the Christians a new one for skinny-dipping in the Sea of Galilee.

gaspode: Lipo:
According to the article, it wasn't funded by taxpayer dollars. The trip was pad for by a group relatd to AIPAC.

Which is kind of shocking too.. a huge junket to another country for a load of lawmakers paid for by a lobby for a foreign country would generate enormous pushback if it was a different combination of country and lawmakers.

I'd like to see Obama take the Congressional Black Caucus to Kenya.

As much as I'm usually critical of Republicans ruining the country and embarrassing us overseas, I am so proud that it was Kevin Congressperson who took it all off and skinnydipped. Thank you, Congressman Yoder!

Hell yeah I'm doing c). Swimming nude feels good, and frolicking with other skinny-dippers is fun.

They weren't on the clock, no taxpayer money was used, there's no law against swimming naked in the Sea of Galilee, Congresscritters are human too, so what's the goddamn deal?

What the hell do a bunch of freshman congressmen from bumf*ck Kansas need to do with a fact-finding mission in Isreal?

ox45tallboy: You know, Jesus apparently swam in the Sea of Galilee himself. And back then, they didn't have swimsuits. Which means that Jesus likely swam nude in the same of Galilee, just like this guy.

And remember what the Jews did to him...

From the KC Star Story:
"The trip, said to have been open only to those 18 and over, was sponsored by the American Israel Education Foundation, according to a database of travel records maintained by Legistorm.com. The trip lasted from Aug. 13 to Aug. 21 last year, the record show, and cost the foundation $20,087 for Yoder and his wife's travel, lodging, meals and other expenses. The foundation, a charity, says its mission is to provide grants for educational programs and conferences and to "help educate political leaders and influentials about the importance of the U.S.-Israel relationship through first-hand experiences in Israel." The foundation is connected with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which is connected with many conservatives in Congress

After looking at the laws, public nudity is no crime in Israel, there is a current motion to ban it everywhere except beaches, even under that he would be cool... no story here other than hypocrisy (you know he would fight tooth and nail against it at home). Apparently at the moment full nudity is legal nation wide in fact.

These trips to the Holy Land are a rite of passage for members of Congress, as they visit the most sacred sites in the Jewish and Christian faiths - while their Israeli government hosts drive home the huge importance of U.S. support of Israel. That's partially why, when the trip devolved into drinking and merrymaking, Cantor was livid.

AIPAC affiliated pals spend 600K feting googly-eyed GOP politicos and it devolves into drunken hijinks replete w/ skinny dipping in the Sea of Galilee?

No doubt taken out of the billions the US gives Israel every year.

Meh, the GOP's unquestioning support of Israel is far more troubling than the idea of some GOP newbs gone wild from my POV but the story is not without it's charms.

Anything that pisses Eric Cantor off cannot really be a bad thing, ultimately.

Put me in the "don't really give a shiat" column.

Only part is that it does to contradict how these guys always tell the rest of us we should behave.

2012-08-20 02:57:21 AM
As much as I hate the modern Republican party, I find myself having absolutely 0 outrage at this.

No, seriously. "An it harm none, do as thou will". The actions here caused no harm to anyone there, and probably did a lot of good. Honest enjoyment of ones self in a non-harmful manner is IMPORTANT for mental wellbeing and stability, and I would encourage politicians of any stripe to relax, let down their hair, and let loose. A mind that is stressed and pressured is not flexible, and true politics is the art of compromise, horse-trading and diplomacy.

Well, okay, it did potentially harm someone, but I think Eric Cantor's butthurt was a preexisting condition.

Honestly, this makes them seem a whole lot more likeable to me. It would be a shame though, if they judged others for "lewd" behavior.

Well, since Newsweak's value following the strictly lefty lamestream media line fell to less than zero, perhaps they finally figured out that there's a market for someone willing to put out a more balanced news magazine.

Although I am not really holding my breath.

okay....I don't have a problem with skinny dipping....

but.....answer this:

wouldn't you find it awkward to strip off your clothes in the presence of your co-worker's wives....and in one case apparently....daughter?

No matter how drunk I am I would not strip butt naked in that particular company. Then again, I can handle myself when drunk.
