FitzShivering: Bennie Crabtree: Why is he talking about "empathy" when he was talking about biological defences before? I want to know what biological defences he thought. and apparently still thinks, exist.

Rep Akin: "Haven't you all seen Transformers? When a woman is raped, her ovaries turn into Ovaries Prime. They expel all the Spermicons. There are doctors everywhere saying this."

Rep Akin: "I'm sorry, I misspoke. It was GoBots I was thinking of. Please don't hate me."

That sounds as reasonable as it's gonna get.

The two freeper threads I'm reading, the majority want him gone, because the seat is more important than 'being technically right'... and then there are those who just think he made a heinous comment and needs to be tossed on principle. But few, right now, are okay with this dude running; they think he not only handed the seat to mccaskill with this comment, he's damaged all republicans nationwide.

I just wandered over to the Free Republic for the first time. Is there password that gets you to the real site that is navigable?

balloot: People smarter than you have said otherwise.

It has nothing to do with being "Smarter" or "Dumber." In the current political climate, a little cynicism is the only way to avoid disappointment - see the Walker recall for an example. Certainly, in a state populated by sane people, this farkstick's comments would get him booted out on his worthless ass, but we're talking about solid Republican voters here.

Sure, "misspoke" as in "said it out loud instead of in my head".

How?! Do they explain how he is correct? I can't imagine a convincing explanation of how babies are made that would account for this weird claim.

Captain_Ballbeard: Leftists tend to hate anything that has an image of being strong, good and successful. They hate America, they hate Western civilization, they hate white males, they hate rationality. The reasons that leftists give for hating the West, etc. clearly do not correspond with their real motives. They SAY they hate the West because it is warlike, imperialistic, sexist, ethnocentric and so forth, but where these same faults appear in socialist countries or in primitive cultures, the leftist finds excuses for them, or at best he GRUDGINGLY admits that they exist; whereas he ENTHUSIASTICALLY points out (and often greatly exaggerates) these faults where they appear in Western civilization. Thus it is clear that these faults are not the leftist's real motive for hating America and the West. He hates America and the West because they are strong and successful.

If it wasn't possible for women to fall pregnant when their "Juices aren't flowing," then none of the current crop of Republican politicians would have children. QED.

2012-08-20 06:43:22 AM
Oh look...Another Republican who is completely ignorant of how the female body works and thinks women should have to raise children born from rape.

Keep in mind, Paul Ryan was a cosponsor of this ignorant asshole's bill attempting to define "forcible rape"...

This is what you vote for when you vote for the GOP.

Wow, and they deny there is a war against women. The guy couldn't have just come up with this bullshiat on his own. Makes you wonder what all other stuff they believe and keep on the down low. Sure he says he "misspoke", but he sure gave a lot of detail for someone who "misspoke". It is almost like this is a common view discussed frequently among him and his peers.

peter21: Good luck finding this story on foxnews.com.

It's there, but it's just a text link. Not surprisingly, this rates as a 'non-story' for the true believers.

Yep, just turned on the FM right-wing newstalk station here in St. Louis and that's definitely the angle they're going with this.

"How dare we talk about something besides the preapproved talking points about how the economy sucks and how it's all Obama's fault somehow!"

2012-08-20 07:01:46 AM
I bet that plenty of women will still vote for him. It's considered more important to vote against a Democrat than it is for a Republican candidate you actually admire. That, and in Republicanville there will be people claiming that his off-the-wall remarks were somehow taken out of context, and that the liberal media did a hit-piece. Anything to avoid admitting that this douchebag actually did say those things. It's their defense mechanism. Get caught with a dead boy in your bedroom? Clearly, the lamestream media set you up. Don't believe me? Look at how it was Katie Couric's fault that Sarah Palin made an ass of herself on national television.

phalamir: dahmers love zombie: . I have a certain amount of respect for the absolutist "pro-life" position in that it's morally consistent. Abhorrent in the extreme, but consistent.

Then you are a farktard. The act of being consistent is not some moral high ground. "Consistent" also means "too farking stupid to recognize you are wrong" and/or "unrepentantly evil" People who are not sociopathic xenocidal death-monkeys often change their positions based on new data and new viewpoints; they have nuanced positions precisely because they realize things are almost never black and white. Clinging to black-and-white maximalists for the pure sake that they are black-and-white maximalists makes you too stupid to be allowed to live on any sane planet - please put yourself out of our misery. I'll even say that I hold this position whole-heartedly and absolutely, just so you can know you are worshipping my moral certainty when you eat the gun. Toodles.

Or as someone much smarter than I said: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds."

That's the actual talking point on the radio this morning.

Always that darn gotcha LSM media's fault for making Republicans say profoundly stupid things.

The fact that they can't get over the fact that they have lost control of the narrative of how "the economy is bad and it's all Obama's fault" is quite an amusing sight to behold.

Really shows you how clueless the GOP is when they don't have control of the message.

That sentiment is far more common then you want to think about, trust me. I have family members who are so blinded by abortion politics that they've convinced themselves that rape is just part of god's plan to bless you with a child.

I'm dead serious.

The vehement defense of the sanctity of a zygote has so poisoned their minds that the actual living, breathing mother is never even considered as a human being. It's a gutter mix of misogyny and blind devotion to what they imagine god to be. It turns my stomach.

I'm amused as all hell watching the GOP - at every level - scramble to regain their formerly airtight control of "the narrative." Apparently, the lamestream media, unions, and abortion have now stepped in to replace their former golden goose, terrorism and national security. The GOP can't survive on a platform of actual ideas, so it needs a means of frightening or enraging voters to remain viable.

I fully suspect that if I turn on Fox, within a few hours some "special correspondent" (read, some soccer mom from Tulsa) will chime in that the "MSM" has shamelessly pounced on this guy and his vagina-possum remarks. Do you see how mean they're being to him? It's not fair!

Lost in all of this will be any conversation about the actual things he said. The story becomes about anything and everything but the actual topic at hand.

A journalist needs to ask him, do you think many pregnancies that are claimed to be caused by rape are in fact not caused by rape? What percentage, in your estimate? That drops him equidistant between the Christian sharia crowd he was playing to and everybody else.

dofus: You don't have to go from 'Republican' to 'Democrat'. You can go from 'Republican' to 'Independent Thinker'. As such, you get to choose between _ALL_ the candidates on the ballot.

The problem with that theory is that EVERY damn republican votes in lockstep with the party when it really matters. To vote for some "moderate" republican is just a bad a putting in another teabagger. No. More. Republicans. It's that damn simple.

The GOP has to purge their evangelical nutbags and do some serious soul searching if they want to be taken seriously by anyone with more than 2 functional brain cells. I'm not holding my breath.

Yeah, with a seven point lead, I doubt he gets beat, heck the 4 point win is probably likely because honestly with things so divided who is jumping sides? The first guess would be "oh he'll lose more female voters", yet these people were going to vote for him even though he was part of the redefine rape thing in the first place so I doubt those women are going to change sides now.

gulogulo: Or as someone much smarter than I said: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds."

Maybe. But I also have a grudging respect for the pro-lifers who are against any abortion, even in case of rape or incest, because it's at least possible that they are truly concerned about the unborn and not simply trying to control women. The people who make the exception for rape or incest are basically admitting that some precious innocents are more precious than others which don't seem to be precious at all.

Although I consider myself a conservative, the sheer, unadulterated ignorance of this idiot horrifies me. I've done my "soul-searching" and discovered... I don't have one. My consciousness is a manifestation of my physical brain, not the by-product of some imaginary "cosmic interface". I believe that hard work should pay off for the worker, rather than the rich slob who's set his self up in a position to exploit everything within reach, or the chronically lazy, who keep selling their votes to charlatans, each with their own dreams of subverting the American Dream . Where is my party??? I believe that everybody should be taken care of, but that society in return has a right to expect a minimum amount of responsibility, honesty and morality from each citizen. Where is my party?

You can say that kinda stuff all day long at church or at a fundraiser where you're surrounded by people who wont think too hard about what you're saying. If they do think about what you're saying they'll wrap it in a flag and cram it up baby jesus to make it good.

If you say stuff like that around certain types of press or liberals they'll just use it against you. They'll take what you said and try to figure out what you meant, what you're thinking. They're so smug when they have direct quotes. They don't understand that it doesn't matter what you say or do, when you have god with you the ends always justify the means.

Just watch. Within 15 years your children will be learning "women don't get pregnant from rape" in their biology classes as part of a "balanced cirriculum", and any dissent otherwise will be seen a religious intolerance towards the persecuted Christian Majority.

Rincewind53: Several things to note from Congressman Akin's response:

1. At no point did he apologize or explain what he means by "legitimate" rape, and what "illegitimate rape" might entail
2. At no point did he apologize or explain what he means by the bizarre assertion that women who were raped wouldn't get pregnant as a result
3. At no point did he apologize for his comments implying that women who get raped shouldn't be allowed to get an abortion.

In other words, go F*CK yourself, Congressman Akin, and leave the decisions about women's bodies to those who actually know how the hell pregnancy works, and have a vagina themselves and are therefore the only ones actually affected by your asinine comments.

If it were a legitimate rape, the woman's body would activate its anti-rape defenses, and miscarry the fetus.

If she were asking for it by dressing or acting provocatively, she'd get pregnant.

Ergo, a pregnancy resulting from a "rape" proves it wasn't a legitimate rape, and the woman is a slut, not a victim.

Faith-based science FTW!

Parthenogenetic:
If it were a legitimate rape, the woman's body would activate its anti-rape defenses, and miscarry the fetus.

Well, not so much the body. See, if it was a legitimate rape, God would stop the conception. If the conception happens, it's because it's God's will for that baby to be born. So, it couldn't be really rape.

This is what happens when someone with absolutely NO expertise decides he wants to express some outrageous assertion and belief he has without any real facts to back it up.

He could have just said "I am no expert on abortion, on rape or anything, but I hold a solemn view that abortion is bad and it should be illegal." But no, he had to start this stupid "legitimate rape" thing. It is stupid. It is like Whoopie Goldberg saying "it wasn't rape rape."

Whatever, I'm glad this asshat made a fool of himself. Social Conservatives are Darwining the careers.

This is what this farking scumbag truly believes: If a woman is pregnant, then she wasn't raped.

You might as well see if she weighs the same as a duck to get the witchcraft allegations taken care of as well.

madgonad: As a person that has lived in Missouri for 41 years I can say that this giant douche will win.

Why?

Because anyone who is not Claire will win. Claire McCaskill was an early and major supporter of Obama - the uppity negro that we hate so much. Seriously, 2008 was a Democratic avalanche in MO, except for president since we went solidly for McCain. This is a foul, racist and bigoted state that my wife won't let me leave. I was living in mid-Missouri in 1994 and I distinctly remember the senatorial election between Alan Wheat (who was black) and John Ashcroft. The push from the GOP was that their man Ashcroft was the white guy running against a black guy, and you know.... That was it. No positions, just make sure everyone knows that Wheat=black. It was sickening. Rural Missouri is a vile place.

When I visit my brother in Columbia I usually fly into St. Louis and then drive (or take MoEx) to Columbia. I always feel like I'm travelling through a no-mans land between St. Louis and Columbia what with all the Jeesus billboards along I70.
