stoli n coke: Mrtraveler01: cameroncrazy1984: Noam Chimpsky: The anti-lifers have kind of a dilemma when talking about aborting the rape conceived children. It makes the other abortions seem more and more vile. Same thing with the life of the mother at risk if she carries to term scenario. Your convenience aborters really feel like shiat when they hear the debate.

What does that have to do with Todd Akin being an idiot?

Oh right, you can't defend that so you bring this weak stuff.

I guess they still haven't been given the pre-approved talking points from the Todd Akin campaign.

And considering the lame response from the campaign themselves over this, it might be a while.

Nah, Rush, Glenn and the Fox News League of Fail will tell them why this is all the ebil Dems fault by tomorrow.

I've seen an early draft based on some of the comments I saw on other websites

"Wahh, how dare you talk about the words that come out of Todd Akin's mouth instead of the preapproved talking points (ie: "real issues") about how everything is Obama and tacitly McCaskill's fault"

Coco LaFemme: Sure you did, sparklefark. "I misspoke" is politician-speak for "I shouldn't have said that on camera." If you're going to say something that retarded, just own it. Get on camera and say, "Yeah I said that. Wanna do something about it, assfark?" Wouldn't do him much good, but at least it would be better political theater than the standard "I mispoke/I was taken out of context/The lamestream MSM media doctored the video" that comprises the dog and pony show we get now.

I love you, and my wife is okay with that.

Bashar and Asma's Infinite Playlist: dahmers love zombie: No doubt about that. I have a certain amount of respect for the absolutist "pro-life" position in that it's morally consistent.

They (almost) never are completely morally consistent though. If they were, they'd want to see women who've had abortions in jail on charges of first degree infanticide. Lock up the doctors, too. I'd bet in some of these red states, abortion would be a capital crime.

I had to go back and add "almost" up there since guys who shoot up abortion clinics probably think this way: one doctor's life to prevent a thousand unborn babies from being sauteed.

It is hard to see any significant number really believe abortion is murder, it is purely political rhetoric for most. The obvious example is while Bush held all branches of government and did nothing significant about abortion (apart from the generic defunding of PP and generally finding ways to make the process of getting an abortion worse for the women that need them); if abortion really was murder then surely pro-life Republicans should have crucified Bush for missing that opportunity to stop tens of thousands of murders - which would be far more significant than things like Iraq (to people in the US anyway) - but very little was made of it as far as I can tell.

/of course we know in reality the GOP would be stupid to actually do anything major on abortion - it will be killing the goose that laid the golden egg

It will be interesting to see how much money McCaskill raise off this alone.

IntertubeUser: I used to be a Republican, even volunteered to do door-to-door work for a couple of congressional campaign. But even when there's a GOP candidate who isn't batshiat crazy, I wonder if they're merely hiding it better and/or if it's a good idea to support a candidate of a party which tolerates and panders to batshiat craziness.

So I want to thank the Theocrats for probably turning me into a Democrat. For the first time in my life, my November ballot will be straight Democrat. It's a shame because I still believe that there's a conservative argument to be made in fiscal matters and governance. However, I've given up on the modern Republican Party ever being able to make that argument.

Indeed. The Republican Party no longer is doing anything except actively making the entire country worse.

As for this Akin asshole, isn't it funny how these deeply-held beliefs that Republicans hold have to be explained away during news conferences. It's almost like they know how repugnant they are yet they still don't question them at all.

Badafuco: How? How can one live as long as this farkstain and actually believe that? He had to have expressed this nugget of wisdom in private to someone along they way. How someone someone not tell him, "Yeah, Todd about that 'women can't get pregnant if raped' thing, you may want to bone up on some female anatomy knowledge, you farkstain"

He's a Republican. It's clear that all Republicans think young women are whores. Every young woman going about her business is provoking rape. This is today's Republican party.

These men believe that women absolutely LOVE being raped. No kidding. A women is always grateful when she's punched in the face, slammed against a wall, and then flung to the floor, where her dress is jammed up, her panties are ripped off, and her personal space is invaded by a pale white needle-nose dick attached to a smug white boy.

"Misspoke" is Republican for "I said what I actually believe and the main stream heard it".

i guess i illegitimately raped my girlfriend because, SURPRISE!!! we have a baby.

i'll have to read up on conservative seduction methods so i can get this legitimate rape thing down.

it'd be less painful than a vasectomy and more rapey than condoms!!

This "retraction" is the result of his staff trying to do damage control. I don't for one second believe he has changed his thinking or beliefs.

It is my sincere hope that the voters in Missouri keep this dangerous, ignorant man out of any kind of public office, let alone the US Senate.

I just think a lot of these GOP Congressmen and Senators have never actually had consensual sex with a woman. At least, not without having to bribe them.

How is this "misspeaking"? He never actually said what was misspoken.

Was the word "legitimate" not supposed to be included? I could see that a "misspeaking". Of course, if true, that still leaves his comments as slightly less morally abhorrent and completely untrue.
Adding a word or poor phrasing, I can give him the benefit of the doubt because I have no knowledge of him.

The problem was his entire statement. That is not misspeaking.

Why is he talking about "empathy" when he was talking about biological defences before? I want to know what biological defences he thought. and apparently still thinks, exist.

2012-08-19 10:07:20 PM
Well, I did my usual round-up of asking a good deal of the people I know right and left what they think (I really should start a polling service). Everyone agreed it was an awful and horrible thing to say, even those who are against abortion in all cases. I don't think the "oops, I misspoke!" is going to get him very far. The same people who think that no fetuses should be aborted because it's still murder don't seem OK with the idea that if a woman gets raped and is pregnant she is lying about having been actually raped.

Saying "57 states" when you mean "47 states" is misspeaking
Welcoming "the next President of the United States" when you introduce your VP candidate is misspeaking

Clearly stating your beliefs and then getting called out on it is not misspeaking. It just means your beliefs are farked up.

In GOP-speak, "misspoke" = "I was saying something I believe and the wrong person heard it, so I have to pretend that I didn't mean what I said."

Remember, this is a party that accuses reporters of taking things out of context for running full, unedited quotes.

Leftists tend to hate anything that has an image of being strong, good and successful. They hate America, they hate Western civilization, they hate white males, they hate rationality. The reasons that leftists give for hating the West, etc. clearly do not correspond with their real motives. They SAY they hate the West because it is warlike, imperialistic, sexist, ethnocentric and so forth, but where these same faults appear in socialist countries or in primitive cultures, the leftist finds excuses for them, or at best he GRUDGINGLY admits that they exist; whereas he ENTHUSIASTICALLY points out (and often greatly exaggerates) these faults where they appear in Western civilization. Thus it is clear that these faults are not the leftist's real motive for hating America and the West. He hates America and the West because they are strong and successful.

The first one to voice say crazy shiat American Conservative base actually thinks in public gets crucified, but over time the shock value of the stupidity will wear off on the general public and they'll slowly start to own it. Within 5 years "women can't get pregnant from 'legitimate rape'" will be the official party policy of the Texas GOP. Within 10 years Christians will claim that scoffing or ridiculing it is a sign that their religious beliefs are "persecuted", and the mainstream media will let them get away with it.

Clinging to black-and-white maximalists for the pure sake that they are black-and-white maximalists makes you too stupid to be allowed to live on any sane planet - please put yourself out of our misery. Gulper Eel: dahmers love zombie: On the contrary, he reiterated his belief that rape victims should be forced to carry their pregnancies to term. Repellent, but quite representative of the mainstream GOP position on the issue.

Here I gotta play devil's advocate.

The no-exceptions position is at least more ethically consistent on one level than the usual pander - if somebody shows an OBGYN data a healthy fetus, there's no way to tell how it was conceived and therefore they should all be treated equally under the law, whatever that law might be.

The problem with the pro-life in every case, no exceptions policy is that most of the people who hold to that ideal (and the majority of republican voters) are the same ones that cheered for Rick Perry when he bragged about how many people Texas had executed under his watch.

Benevolent Misanthrope: Bathia_Mapes: Benevolent Misanthrope: Oh no. Noooooo no no no no. That was not a misspeak. That was an "Oh shiat, I told the truth" moment.

I hope to all deities that McCaskill hangs this around his neck with so many knots it'll take a goddamn needle to get them undone.

And not just an "Oh shiat, I told the truth", moment, but an "Oh shiat, I told the truth", moment and got caught.

Yep - "Oh shiat I told the truth. Out loud. In front of people."

I hope to hell this kills his campaign.

It won't. McCaskill might as well be Obama's Siamese twin in MO, and it will be impossible for her to distance herself from him. She's also got the slum retirement homes here, and the private jets she was hiding in another state to avoid the property taxes.

As long as she's got those going for her, she's toast.
