Oh no. Noooooo no no no no. That was not a misspeak. That was an "Oh shiat, I told the truth" moment.

I hope to all deities that McCaskill hangs this around his neck with so many knots it'll take a goddamn needle to get them undone.

Yep - "Oh shiat I told the truth. Out loud. In front of people."

I hope to hell this kills his campaign.

Sure you did, sparklefark. "I misspoke" is politician-speak for "I shouldn't have said that on camera." If you're going to say something that retarded, just own it. Get on camera and say, "Yeah I said that. Wanna do something about it, assfark?" Wouldn't do him much good, but at least it would be better political theater than the standard "I mispoke/I was taken out of context/The lamestream MSM media doctored the video" that comprises the dog and pony show we get now.

Several things to note from Congressman Akin's response:

1. At no point did he apologize or explain what he means by "legitimate" rape, and what "illegitimate rape" might entail
2. At no point did he apologize or explain what he means by the bizarre assertion that women who were raped wouldn't get pregnant as a result
3. At no point did he apologize for his comments implying that women who get raped shouldn't be allowed to get an abortion.

In other words, go F*CK yourself, Congressman Akin, and leave the decisions about women's bodies to those who actually know how the hell pregnancy works, and have a vagina themselves and are therefore the only ones actually affected by your asinine comments.

Yeah, he "misspoke" in the sense that he said what he thinks.

Yep. On the contrary, he reiterated his belief that rape victims should be forced to carry their pregnancies to term. Repellent, but quite representative of the mainstream GOP position on the issue. Why a woman would ever vote for a member of a party that is so utterly dismissive of their basic rights is beyond me.

Heh if this miscreant thinks he can come out with a "misspoke" and sweep it under a rug then he has no idea how much damage he created for himself.

Even republicans are advising this twat to get out.

Still seems correct.

He apologized for saying what he believes and some people got upset. Nowhere in there did he admit that he was wrong or said idiotic things that are false.

He'll merrily go along saying and believing the same things. And, since he is up so much in the race, he'll probably go right along saying these things in Congress next year.

I never meant to say "legitimate rape doesn't cause pregnancy." I only meant to say that rape victims who get pregnant are actually filthy filthy whores!

For what it's worth, McCaskill is a former prosecutor. I'm sure she has plenty of counter-examples in her roledex to put in campaign commercials.

Sometimes a politician misspeaks and says "57 states" or "next President of the United States."

Sometimes a politician phrases something indelicately and says "put y'all back in chains."

In this case a politician revealed his contemptible views, not realizing how contemptible they were, and has now realized he should have kept his stupidity to himself.

Yep. And that's why George Allen is a Senator now.

Oh wait, he was leading that race and then he lost following macaca.

He wasn't being malicious, as an old white man he hasn't a farking clue how women work "down there".

He probably assumed vagina dentata was a rape preventative.

The USA is becoming a place where the plutocracy does whatever it wants without much effort. They just find the dumbest people from wealthy families, put a suit on them and let them derp their way in to the hearts of the ignorant and hateful masses.

dahmers love zombie: On the contrary, he reiterated his belief that rape victims should be forced to carry their pregnancies to term. Repellent, but quite representative of the mainstream GOP position on the issue.

Here I gotta play devil's advocate.

The no-exceptions position is at least more ethically consistent on one level than the usual pander - if somebody shows an OBGYN data a healthy fetus, there's no way to tell how it was conceived and therefore they should all be treated equally under the law, whatever that law might be.

And having said that, the Christian position is that if the pregnant rape victim is left in a spot where she has to bring the fetus to term, then the community should give her all the support she needs. I do see churches do this and with an understandable minimum of publicity-seeking, but anti-abortion politicians usually leave that loose end hanging. Unconscionable.

Akin's pander comes in a different area: telling his supporters that there's actually the political will and the judicial inclination to pass and uphold a ban on abortion. Which is quite obviously bearing false witness and no Christian should be a part of it.

2012-08-19 09:18:21 PM
McCaskill was short and sweet with her response:

McCaskill Statement on Akin's "Legitimate Rape" and Pregnancy Remarks

"It is beyond comprehension that someone can be so ignorant about the emotional and physical trauma brought on by rape," said McCaskill. "The ideas that Todd Akin has expressed about the serious crime of rape and the impact on its victims are offensive."

RIP TODD AKIN

2012-08-19 09:22:33 PM
In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it's clear that I misspoke in this interview

Which part? What specifically did you say that was wrong, and how would you like to clarify your statements?

Those who perpetrate these crimes are the lowest of the low in our society and their victims will have no stronger advocate in the Senate to help ensure they have the justice they deserve.

Bullshiat. Forcing a woman to have a child that could potentially remind them every day of the pain and trauma they endured is NOT justice.

the type of country we will be leaving our children...

...whether or not we actually want to have them.

The important thing is that he remembered to own up to his stupidity blame the media for reporting exactly what he said:

"But I also believe that this election is about a wide range of very important issues, starting with the economy and the type of country we will be leaving our children and grandchildren. We've had 42 straight months of unacceptably high unemployment, trillion-dollar deficits, and Democratic leaders in Washington who are focused on growing government, instead of jobs. That is my primary focus in this campaign and while there are those who want to distract from that, knowing they cannot defend the Democrats' failed economic record of the last four years, that will continue to be my focus in the months ahead."

Ladies and gents: the party of personal responsibility.

Since Todd Akin is clearly such an expert in the sciences, surely we can trust policies he wants to enact regarding global warming and teaching of evolution in schools.
