kinda hypocritical to post this kind of thing on a website with a word filter, isn't it?

I swear that someday one of these kids is going to say the line "I tried to warn them what happens in these situations from what I read online. I warned them that basically you make the news as some of the stupidest administrators in the USA, but they just didn't listen and here we are."

This was a public school, right? Yeah...sue the galactic fark out of them. This is bs.

2012-08-19 05:08:33 PM
No one will care about that piece of paper once she graduates college. Hell, since she's starting college in a few days on scholarship, no one cares about that piece of paper today.

2012-08-19 05:08:37 PM
A public school can't deny a student access to their school records. If the diploma is a school record then they must hand it over..... at the very least they must provide her with her transcripts and proof of graduations, which is all any university cares about anyhow.

Well, it is Oklahoma.

One little letter from a lawyer or judge will remind them of the limits of in loco parentis.

I liked the sentence/paragraph structure here in TFA:

He says the principal told Kaitlin she would have to write an apology letter before he would release the diploma.

A move dad believes is illegal.

Because writing, "he says the principal... release the diploma, a move dad believe is illegal." would've been too hard.

2012-08-19 05:17:01 PM
the fuk you say! Couldn't they have just washed her mouth out with soap?

2012-08-19 05:17:34 PM
FTFA: "When tasked with writing the graduation speech, her dad says she got her inspiration from the movie "Eclipse: The Twilight Saga.""

I stopped reading right there & agreed with whatever stupid reason the school had.

2012-08-19 05:22:43 PM
FTFA

He says in the written script she gave to the school she said "heck," but in the moment she said h*** instead.

They couldn't/wouldn't even use the word "HELL" in the article. WOW, what prudes they have in OK!

These people really need a large dolop of anal lube to pull their heads out of their ass. And to that I say, H. E. Double Toothpicks!

It amazes me how beurocratic functionaries can paint themselves into a no win situation over the stupidest crap.

What the hell is their problem?

No! You misunderstood her. She said hail. HAIL!

The superintendent was stupid. Instead of withholding her diploma for saying a bad word, he should have withheld her diploma for making the school look bad for quoting Twilight. More people would have understood.

My attitude would be "if my transcript got sent off to the college, who cares"

If they threatened to hold my transcript, a lawyer would be called immediately

What's the law on this kind of foolishness anyway?

If it was me I'd just say "Hell, it's only a bit of paper. Who cares? Keep it. If and when I need any records for official purposes I'll be in touch and you will supply them"

If she's already gotten accepted and awarded a scholarship, then she'll have already sent them out months ago

"I don't know who you think you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for an apology, I can tell you I don't have regrets. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over the last four years of school. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you give me my diploma now, that'll be the end of it. I will not call a lawyer, I will not sue you. But if you don't, I will call my lawyer, I will sue you, and I will win."

Is "hell" even considered a swear word these days? I've seen it used in plenty if G rated programs and movies without a second thought.

I'm not too familiar with the laws surrounding this, but I'll join the chorus and bet it is illegal. Besides the fact that they are withholding records, she has officially graduated and making her do "schoolwork" after completing all of her requirements probably isn't allowed.

Also, good for her for fighting this. Most people, including myself, probably would have thrown together some half ass apology letter just to make the administrators STFU and simply move on with life. She is taking a stand, and rightfully so.

2012-08-19 05:49:24 PM
Who gives a crap about her diploma? She was already given a scholarship, so she sent out her transcripts months ago.

And, there isn't anything else she needs the HS diploma for again.

Hell, who even keeps their HS diploma past the first three days of showing family members?

I don't work for this site but I'm assuming that the word filter here is so that school and work computers don't automatically block the site. But keep fighting the good fight. Damn the Man, damn him.

Aside from being displayed at your graduation party, what good is the actual high school diploma anyway?

A good story about why you were denied your diploma is far more useful.

2012-08-19 06:02:25 PM
David Nootbaar is furious his daughter's school is keeping her diploma.

C'mon: I can't be the only person who giggled at that.

2012-08-19 06:04:13 PM
I would assume that she still graduated and the only thing at issue here is a physical copy of her diploma1? Given that she's already accepted to college and there are very few occasions in life where you need a physical copy of the diploma2 just let it drop (it's not like you're going to hang your diploma on the wall or anything).

As an alternative she can submit the requested apology, then retract it once in possession of the diploma. Take the retraction as an opportunity to share with the principal your thoughts on why she's such a dried-up old twat.

1. If they are denying graduation and refusing to release transcripts then sue without delay.
2. In 25 years, three post secondary institutions, and a handful of employers I've NEVER been asked for my high school diploma, just transcripts sent directly from the school (and even that only happened once)

She clearly violated the separation of Church and State.

She put the school and the State in a bad position and she clearly should face the consequences.

A real valedictorian would know that and have respect.

This isn't about the use of the word "hell." This is about the principal's assumption that he holds sway over this young woman. That the administrator has decided to leverage the only thing left to him in order to gain some measure of satisfaction for this imagined slight speaks volumes about his ability to lead in any meaningful fashion - as in, not at all. Go to hell, dipshiat.

So what is it about principals and school superintendents? This sort of thing is too common for it to be random chance. Do they take courses for this stuff? Advanced Twatwaffling? In Loco Parentis: Being the Insane Parent? Managing Microphallasia Through Public Performance Art?

Big fish in a small pond syndrome. It's hard to deal with suddenly having zero authority or control over a situation.

2012-08-19 06:25:46 PM
Raise the stakes on them and tell the school administrator to eat shiat. When they predictably gasp in horror, that's when you push all your chips in the middle and tell that school principal you're secretly hated for the last 4 years to go fark himself and hand over my goddamn piece of paper. Right then, you sit back in your chair and put on the smuggest face you can find because there's no way that this ends well for the school short of giving you what you want, and you know it.

Rather than write an apology, or just forget about this nonsense, the AW and her helicopter dad went crying to the media. College will be rough on her.

jbc: College will be rough on her.

If a college withheld a certificate of some sort because a person said the word "Hell," then I'd fully support a person or their parent going to the media.

Of course, college administrators aren't f*cking retarded hillbillies, so there's that.

Dear Principal Riick Martin (seriously, THAT'S his name!?),

For the act of saying the word "hell," I want to apologize to you. Under the circumstances it seemed like a valid word to use, but I now see I was mistaken. Children in the audience could have been misled into thinking that the aforementioned word was acceptable in public discourse. Kids shouldn't be listening to such filth.

You have shown me the error of my ways, and in the future I shall strive to be a better citizen. Oklahoma needs the best citizens it can have to improve and empower the state. Understanding this, I shall avoid using the word "hell" in future discourse.

Sincerely,
Kaitlin Nootbaar (seriously, THAT'S her name!?)
