The most reliable tool for forecasting weather is the Mark 1 eyeball.

"is it raining out?"

(sticks head outside)

"Yup."

Meteoroligists can get things wrong day after day and still have a job. The Florida ones really suck.

I'm not sure if it's the weathermen or the weather but it sucks in Fl either way.

You wouldn't think that getting the weather right in Florida would be all that hard. There ain't much variability. Here in Calgary, seeing all 4 seasons in the same day isn't particularly novel. You can tell the newbie because he only has two seasons of clothing with him at any one time. And the weather guy pretty much says 'fark if I really know, it might do this, but YMMV.'

How hard can it be to do the weather in the UK? Here's what you say, "Today's forecast is overcast, with a strong likelihood of rain." You'll almost always get it right.

Forecasting weather in Florida is trivial.

It's going to be farking hot, and really muggy, and there's a 90% chance of rain in the early afternoon.

/this is the forecast for at least 300 days of the year

In San Diego..It's just the opposite. The weather people here want to be the 1st to say it's gonna rain.

They spelled "apologize" wrong. Now that's a funny headline.

Best thing I can recall is in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne ... in their city centre by some major central statue figure, have an outdoor screen set up where they apparently play movies and such. People sitting down and watching... but what's on? The weather channel, local forecast.

That said yeah... typical English forecast should be 'sunny from 6am-8am, grey until 4pm. Chance of rain throughout the day. Maybe a little sun in the evening, and freaking cold at night'

Sources say the real forecast was "depressing", so they just made one up.

I've been to San Diego numerous times. It never rained. Except the time we were going to Sea World.

desertgeek: It's not the first time the BBC has screwed up a forecast.

Well no doubt the BBC has screwed up plenty of forecasts, but that isn't one of them. If you find the proper context you find that the bit you link to was based on rumours of a hurricane off the coast of Florida the evening before (Bill Giles was on the night before the storm, which he confirmed in an interview after he retired).

So weather models are so untrustworthy that meteorologists will second-guess them on a one-day forecast - but they're considered infallible when predicting details of global warming fifty years out. Ain't science grand?

Hey, it's England. It even rains fish sometimes, which can be good for some barbeques!

They've only had electricity in Newcastle for a few years - moving pictures are still a novelty.

They got it right yesterday for 95% of Southeast England.

The 5% was central London.

A BBC spokesman said: "The weather team always endeavour to be open about forecasting and it was right to explain why today's forecast didn't capture weather events in some regions. This was done following discussions with a full on, no holds barred reaming from Met Office colleagues."

We take our weather seriously here in UK.

Is that beacuse you think weather is more predictable over 10-100 year timescales than 1-10 day timescales right? Because the fluctations average out?

WRONG

Weather/climate is complex coupled chaotic systems. Most variables behave accordign to pink noise. Pink noise does not level out.

But hey, I love the ironic use of the word "smug".

Wrong. Pink noise IS averaged out as to frequency/level. White noise is not.
