Africa is a massive, massive continent. Headline is as useless as saying "earthquake in Asia".

It's off the coast of Africa so it really doesn't matter anyway. And plus it's Africa, so it really doesn't matter anyway.

A lot of the Atlantic hurricanes originate as African Easterly Waves rolling off the west coast.

The next named storm will be Isaac.

Why aren't hurricanes ever named Bob? Or Eddie?

On a tangentially related note: Apparently Google is using its facial recognition algorithm to help with Youtube video recommendations now, at least that's the only reason I can figure why it recommends a video of Louis CK next to that video, which features a guy who looks a lot like Louie CK.

Galileo's Daughter: I hate that song.

That song changed my life. The line:

...and I know that I must do what's right, just as Kilimanjaro rises, like Olympus, above the Serengeti...

In addition to the lyrical virtuosity of packing three tough place names into a single sentence, also addresses the moral responsibilities that starkly confront each of us. Like a single peak dominating the savannah, the duty to do good is undeniable, and becomes the home of the gods of our own conscience.

Or something like that. I was in college, and had just discovered weed.

Only one redeeming quality to that video, the bass player is wearing a NYY cap. So it's not all that bad.

Extra points for that guy's vocal range. Not a lot of dudes can nail some of those notes.

-1 for the Yankees fan.

The Wiki entry on this song has a very interesting CSB on how they set up the drum track for the song. Back in the day when you wanted a loop and the Linn drum didn't sound right, so you did it on tape.

Mike is pretty fascinating - check out his other vid's (and prepare to blow an entire afternoon).

Another "fun fact" - Both he and Jeff (the bassist) are attorneys, Mike is a public defender, and Jeff works for the DA's office. Wonder if they ever found themselves in a potential courtroom conflict? (I realize the judge would probably nix that pairing)...
