In June, South Carolina Senator Lindsay Graham said that he supported eliminating tax cuts for the rich.

"When you talk about eliminating deductions and tax credits for the few, at the expense of the many, I think over time the Republican party's position is going to shift. It needs to, quite frankly, because we are $16 trillion in debt," he said.

I.e., blaming the black guy is fun, but doesn't balance the budget.

...who the hell is Grover Norquist, anyway?

I always did like GHWB.

2012-08-19 08:37:08 AM
Well, in this case Grover is technically correct. And that is the best kind of correct, right?

W did go back on his word and raise taxes. The fact that it made him the last actual fiscally conservative Republican is what Grover conveniently forgets to mention.

2012-08-19 08:51:40 AM
A lot of conservatives at the time thought George was a RINO when he raised taxes. I took his explanation at face value (conditions changed etc.); but the way they reacted you'd think he was devil worshiping in the Oval Office.

Poor Grover.

I mean, it must suck when the idea you had when you were 12 turns out to be so much hokum and malarky...

Well, I like him better than is progeny. But I remember back when he was campaigning for President back in 1988, and for some reason a lot of people were calling him a "wimp". Very strange thing to say about a WWII fighter pilot and former CIA head, but there it was. Then one night I was watching him being interviewed on some TV program, and there was a pretty obviously staged segment where W got really angry with the interviewer and put his mean face on and really gave him what for. After that, the wimp thing pretty much went away.

It was then that I realized that he was no better than the rest.

Pfft. It's made him rich and famous and feared by members of Congress.

I think the idea has done more than he ever imagined it would.

How big a wimp do you need to be to allow yourself to be dictated to by someone the likes of Norquist?

Let's not get too googly over GHWB, he pardoned Cap Weinberger right before he was about to flip and testify against GHWB and St. Reagan about Iran-Contra.

However, when comparing him against GWB, it's evident the old man has a soul and is capable of empathy. Raising taxes when he did was the sane thing to do. Plus, before he "saw the light" he was pro choice, another rarity in the GOP. I remember the 1980 primary season and thinking either him or John Anderson would do well.

Every time I read an article about Norquist I can't help thinking of him as a Khorne berzerker.

reporter: 'Mr. Norquist, what's your plan for balancing the budget?'
Norquist: 'BLOOD! BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!'
reporter: 'um..well, yes I see that but um...what about social sec...'
Norquist: BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD! SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE!'
reporter: 'I see, well um...I have a deadlin...
Norquist: 'THE WEAK SHALL DIE IN FIRE AND BLOOD!
GOP audience: 'BLOOD! BLOOD! BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!'
reporter: 'um, yeah. well I'll just be leaving now...' [runs away]

Every time I see George H. W. Bush, I mentally compare him to Buford T. Justice from Smokey and the Bandit, and George W. Bush to the Sheriff's dim-witted son. I want to believe that at some point, Bush the Elder looked at Bush the Younger and said, "There is no way you came from my loins." That and, "Soon as we get home, first thing I'm gonna do is punch your mama in the mouth."

I have to say, that recent HBO special on him was pretty good. He's a funny guy. Except when it comes to the subject of Ross Perot... he hates that guy.

He's primaried/crucified "moderate" Republicans that don't toe his line. He doesn't care about average people, he hits politicians where it hurts. He gets them unelected.

We had a thread earlier this month...can't find it at present...anybody?...where he lit into Paul Ryan for not proposing deep enough budget cuts and for leaving defense spending as a sacred cow. I have no problem with that...except that if that's what Grover really thinks he should be endorsing Gary Johnson.

I wouldn't say 41 lied. I would say he got rolled by the Democrats promising "suuurrre, we'll make those budget cuts in exchange for the tax hike". And if 41 didn't like the rigidity of those pledges, maybe he should have skipped the whole "read my lips" line.

No. Like a message board troll, Norquist should be ignored. Paying attention to him gives him power.

Once his influence and power are gone, perhaps he will do us all a favor and hang himself from a lamppost.

That may have been the famous Dan Rather interview. That got hot.
Rather grilled him about the Iran-Contra thing and Poppy Bush was having nothing of it.
Something shifted in the political discourse that day; the Bush group realized they could do whatever they wanted and didn't have to explain anything to anybody, ever. It's gotten worse ever since.
Kind of a, "Never explain, never apologize" doctrine came to life in that moment.

Gonna be scary, scarrrrrry days when the Teabaggers of 2025 start calling Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan a couple of RINO socialists.

Of course, it will be hard to understand what they are saying because they will have de-evolved so far by then that they will be walking on all fours and their language has become nothing but a series of grunts, squeals, and ear-piercing yowls.

It wasn't that HW Bush was bad....the Gulf War Conflict 1 was masterfully conducted and ran so smooth it felt more like a training exercise than it did an actual conflict.

It's just that after eight years of that soulless old man before him the country was starting to look for someone that could lead that they also felt could effectively handle the remote controls for the VCR.

...and he ran against Clinton for it.

If Reagan's people hadn't used some dirty tricks to sink his campaign, Bush would have been the nominees in 1980 and thing would have gone very different.

Correction: GHW Bush flew the Grumman TBM, a torpedo bomber that was sometimes converted for ground support missions, like the one he was flying when he was shot down. I saw his plane (or probably a mock-up of his plane, since he got shot down and all) at the USS Intrepid museum. Man's got balls though, no denying that. Carry on.

The Grover Norquist Pledge to never ever raise taxes again EVAH for any reason is an economic suicide pact.

Reagan was a megaRINO too by today's standards but luckily Grover has managed to retcon Saint Ronnie's legacy back into respectability out of sheer necessity.

2012-08-19 12:03:38 PM
I just want to say what everyone already knows, Bush senior was absolutely superior in every way to his dimwitted son.

It is strange to think the apple could fall so very far from the tree.

I wish the GOP would stop taking economic advice from a guy who formulated his policies at 12 and is named after a muppet.

The problem with Bush Sr. is that he contracted out his campaign to worst scum imaginable who said whatever it took to get the man elected. And when he was elected, there was little connection between Bush the candidate for president and Bush the president.

Yeah lying about no new taxes became a talking point and became one reason Bush Sr. lost, but by no means was it the only reason. If we want to get rid of this farkwad Norquist though we have to start firing people who refuse to raise taxes, because that position is completely irresponsible right now.

Ooofh. So was Eisenhower and so was Nixon.
Shows how far we've fallen as a nation and how rabid the discourse has become.

/"You get outta here with your SOCIALIST-COMMUNIST-NAZI Interstate highway system, your sending troops to Little Rock, your presidency of columbia University, your Eisenhower, you cowardly five-star general!"
//"You get outta here with your SOCIALIST-COMMUNIST Environmental Protection Agency and space shuttle program and OSHA and your low-income health insurance plans which even the democrats couldn't support, Nixon!"

Who would make a good republican nowadays? Benito Mussolini?
