My folks had a big bug zapper like that. They hung it over their trout pond, and the result was 24-inch trout in one season. My little brother used to catch his dinner at least two times a week.

I have a server that's mostly full of porn, but I doubt that's what stubby meant.

I wish our server room had ventilation that good. Once, the A/C failed and it got up to 150 degrees.

Thanks, Subby, now my sidebar's going to be full of ads for "One Simple Trick to Increase Your Storage Capacity" and "The Secret VARs Don't Want You to Know" and, ew, "Even Macs Need Anti-Virus"

Why does the air need to be humidified?

Cyno01: Why does the air need to be humidified?

If the air is too dry, you get a bigger chance of generating static discharges that can damage sensitive electronic components. Keeping humidity at round 50% would lower this risk.

Ah, I was thinking it had to do with the thermal capacitance of the air or something, but that makes much more sense.

if i knew anything about anything i would know why such a facility isn't deep in the ground where everything is much cooler.

We're moving our data center in the next few months. What we currently have his shiat. We have backup power - huge UPS units - that could provide power for a couple of hours. Except there is no backup power for the AC. So when we lose power, we have about 15 minutes to shut down everything before it over heats. Fortunately, all the equipment I am responsible for will auto-shutdown when it over heats. The city won't give us a permit to put in a diesel generator, thus the move.

The bonus with the move is we get a new filer that we won't have to share with marketing and legal, who put such a strain on the system that it kills our public websites that have been declared "mission critical".

Legal is an extra bonus pain because they keep changing the document retention rules. I think the current rules are "just don't ever farking delete anything". Which means we are running out of space - and that's just a few months after adding a full rack of disk trays to the system.

For some reason my suggestion that we start sending all documents we consider obsolete and acceptable for deletion to the legal department for storage was rejected.

IANAS, but I'd think in addition to the relative cooler temperatures of the ground as you go deeper, the insulation provided by being totally buried in dirt might make it harder to purge the heat.

You might try explaining to legal how much they can save through lowering discovery costs by having a consistent records disposal schedule, as opposed to going through every electronic record ever generated by the company when there's a legal action. There are other ways a good record retention and disposal schedule will save money, but that might be the most relevant to legal.

Now, I do AC for server rooms for a living, and I have no idea how this system works. Unless they're actually running 100% untempered outside air, and they're comfortable with a 90+ degree server room. If they wanted a real eco-friendly, reliable set up, I woulda expected a geothermal system.

Won't a wet fibreglass media be the near perfect matrix for bacteria to colonize? I'm sure they would be able to readily change it but it would likely quickly get gross using untreated water. I like the idea of evaporative media though.

Damn... Those poor servers. Every DC I've been in the cold aisle is never more than 68 degrees. 85 is just too hot, any serious computing and you'll have thermal alarms all over the place.

Let em get this straight. It takes this much computing power to allow millions of lonely idiots to post what they are having for dinner and for an exponential number of equally stupid and lonely people to reply "looks good!!!!"?

Godamnitsomuch.

Any idea how much computing power it takes for lonely idiots to post about dumb news stories?
