Ubi uses voice recognition technology to listen for plain language commands, responding to requests in a synthesized voice or offering simple status updates using the multi-colored LED indicator lights.

Ubi is a metaphor for God. Ubi is all-powerful and all-knowing, and Ubi is everywhere. The computer can is only a form that Ubi takes to make it easy for people to understand it and use it. It is not the substance inside the can that helps them, but rather their faith in the promise that it will help them.

This might be interesting to hook up to my thermostat that I build from parts and a cheap Android tablet. Although I imagine if I just had their software I could run it right on my thermostat. I wonder if there is actually any technology in it or if it's all software, if it's all software then the price is ridiculous.

I still feel pretty stupid being alone and talking to a computer. You'd have thought with all the sci-fi with voice interaction it would be natural.

This looks cool. For $200 I'd certainly buy one to try.

The ubiquitous computer (or Ubi for short) is an always-on

Energy-draining

voice-activated

Frequently hard to use

Wi-Fi-connected

Unsecure

computer that listens for vocal questions and commands from a user

and background noise from the television

and responds in a synthesized voice or via multi-colored LED status indicator lights

Did I get them all?

That was weird. Odd that he is almost all numbers, which is only 10 options. Alphanumeric alone would be 36 options, much more if you did case-sensitive and/or nonalpha chars. Of course, being a voice interface, it's awkward to say "left parenthesis".

But clearly it's NOT a numeric-only key, he did put in 3 letters. But only 3?? Actually this wouldn't even pass a lot of auto-checking as a "good password".

Especially since the password as spoken was different from the password as displayed.

looks like 222 Alphanumeric characters, to me. 226 if you count "lock".

When trying to brute force a password you have to basically try the entire password at once, correct? So knowing that every character in a password could be a number, letter, or special character does it actually make it any stronger to have more letters or special characters in the password? Do brute forth algorithms automatically try purely numeric combinations first before moving onto alphanumeric and then alphanumeric + special characters? If trying to crack a 6 character password that is known to have any combination of alphanumeric and special characters is 184232 less secure than 18423A, or 1842A! ? Would 1842A! be less secure than !A4^Z6 ?

"Wow, Data must have wanted us to gain back control of the ship easily. Why else would he give us a password that is easily solvable with centuries-old technology?"

In ST: First Contact, Data upgrades to using a 'fractal encryption code'. I don't know much about that, anyone care to educate me?

Couldn't we just have software that does this on an old Android phone? It's got WiFi, mic, speaker, screen for lights, temp sensor, GPS, etc. etc.
