(Sports Illustrated)   According to a new book, Joe Paterno did not know what the word "sodomy" meant when his family made him read a report on Jerry Sandusky. Guess that proves he never went into his team's locker room   (sportsillustrated.cnn.com) divider line 64

Be fair, he may have always heard it referred to as pederasty.

2012-08-18 11:10:48 AM
He worked on a college campus among college students?
Yeah. No. He knew exactly what sodomy was.

This he understands, unlike the "elite" word "sodomy"

Well I'm sure if he'd known what the word meant then he would have totally been against child rape.

The source on this story is Paterno's family, and this comes from Joe Posansky's book, which was all set to be a total hagiography (wonder if Joe Pa knew what that word means) until all the Sandusky stuff hit. So it looks like he's trying to salvage the rest of his book by trying to downplay Paterno's culpability (again, a word Joe Pa may or may not have known).

But like all the self-serving shiat coming out of the Paterno family since this story broke, it seems to backfire. So you'd rather have people think that he was an out of touch, possibly senile old fool than that he covered a kid toucher? Have you thought this through?

Exactly. As if he were a senile old man for the past 15 years? The guy knew something was going on.. Of course he did. How he could live with himself and call himself a leader is beyond me. A leader would have grabbed that situation by the collar and showed the entire college that regardless of position if you screw up you will be handled. That would be someone and someone who might be worthy of a statue.

For fark's sake. If I ever come across a sentence in an official report that goes something like "A person was caught [ unknown word ]-ing a child in our locker room showers," you better believe I am going to figure out what that word means.

So he knows what "omniscient" means, but not "sodomy"? Would "butt rape" or "cornholing" or "stick a dick up a dude's poop shoot" have been easier for that old scumbag to understand?

The Penn State threads have convinced me that there were two Paternos.

One of them was the all-wise, all-powerful coach who changed the lives of his players with his focus on education and was a benevolent monarch ruling over the program.

The other Paterno was a bumbling moron who didn't know what words meant and needed his wife to wipe the drool off of his chin.

Sodomy actually covers any kind of sex outside of penis-into-vagina sex. Which is why the military, which has articles prohibiting sodomy, can occasionally invoke it in cases where, say, someone's sticking it to an officer's wife and she gave him a beej.

jake_lex: So you'd rather have people think that he was an out of touch, possibly senile old fool than that he covered a kid toucher? Have you thought this through?

Ummmm I'm pretty sure that "senile" is a far more desirable public image than "harbored a child molestor."

Much like many old people, who vacillate between extreme clarity and oftentimes complete inability to understand anything.

/have had several relatives with Alzheimers, many of whom were leaders of their communities, and who, for several years, just would completely forget things, and by the end, they couldn't recognize their own family 99% of the time

For farks sake, Paterno had an English Degree from Brown and was considered well read (also note his heavy support of the campus library) and they're going with didn't know what sodomy meant. Really....

/sodomy was definitely in use back then, for example: rum, sodomy, and the lash was coined by Churchill.

consider this: There are a lot of people that don't know the definition of sodomy. I've seen many people who think it only means butt sex.

I was going to say - for reference, see this thread.

People don't know what sodomy means, therefore Joe Paterno didn't make sure Sandusky raped more children and didn't give him a cash bonus and didn't allow him continued access to the rape facilities.

Got it.

2012-08-18 04:40:23 PM
If he didn't know what sodomy was, he was more senile than anyone thought and should've been retired years ago.

In other words, his family is full of shiat once again.

No, I'm just really bad at making excuses for a disgusting human being who facilitated child rape or trying to minimize the reality of his crimes.

The book also details the long and frosty relationship Paterno had with Sandusky while they worked together at Penn State. According to the book, the two were never friendly and late in Sandusky's tenure, Paterno felt the defense was not performing well and neither was Sandusky.

Paterno did not want to fire Sandusky because he was so popular in the community and with fans, according to the book. The book indicates that Sandusky showed interest in taking an early retirement in 1999, and Paterno encouraged him to do so and let his assistant know he would not be the next head coach at Penn State. Sandusky and Curley negotiated a retirement package, and among Sandusky's demands was to stay on through the 1999 season. The book indicates Paterno reluctantly agreed, and then regretted the decision when the team, which was considered one of the national championship favorites going into the season and reached No. 2 in the nation, lost three games late in the year with an underperforming defense.

Sandusky's early retirement at age 55 has led to speculation that a 1998 allegation by a boy against Sandusky that was never prosecuted by authorities led to Penn State quietly pushing Sandusky out. Paterno told a grand jury he was unaware of that allegation but evidence uncovered by Freeh report investigators suggest that he did.

Yet Sandusky worked closely with Paterno for thirty years. Paterno was publicly "frosty" towards Sandusky during those last years probably because he found out about the kiddie ass rapings. Yet he didn't go public with it for supposedly PR purposes while Sandusky was able to parlay a lucrative retirement package, and continued to hang around State College, where Paterno was a cult figure.
Everything about this indicates that there was some kind of blackmail going on by Sandusky and if that is so then others (influential and politically connected alumni) have to be involved. Either that plays into this scenario, or the entire mess is void of logic.

ha-ha-guy: For farks sake, Paterno had an English Degree from Brown and was considered well read (also note his heavy support of the campus library) and they're going with didn't know what sodomy meant. Really....

I believe it was in the original GJ testimony where Paterno describes he didn't understand the concept of sex between a grown man and a boy. That I can maybe comprehend from a doddering old buffoon, but even that kind of naivety from someone who was on this planet for 80+ years requires spending all of that time in the most reclusive, restrictive of bubbles where, if you didn't know that could happen, you most likely were oblivious to all kinds of human behavior.

As for the "not knowing sodomy" thing, you'll find plenty of people who assume it's "hurr butt sex", which is a woefully incomplete definition, but at least they have their own interpretation, incorrect as it is. Actually throwing your hands up and saying "I have no idea what sodomy is, I give up"? No one over the age of 10 who received formal education since the dawn of f*cking time does that.

2012-08-18 06:25:03 PM
Maybe he was unclear about it being SODOMY sodomy, not just sodomy... just like the whole RAPE rape versus rape distinction.

Because if it was just sodomy, then it might have been okay, or something.

2012-08-18 06:27:29 PM
But did he know what the word "dictionary" meant?

How dare you insult the real victims. Those poor students will only get to watch their favorite college football team play a full season of games. Those NCAA commies, obviously jealous of PSU's success, took away the fans' right to shell out hundreds of dollars each in order to travel half-way across the country to watch the team play in a third-tier bowl game. There is no justice for the real victims.

Sure there are. People who defend child rapists and those who cover up their crimes are on one side, and those who don't are on the other. The fact that people on the first side can even look at themselves in the mirror each morning makes me weep for humanity.

He sure negotiated a sweet retirement deal for a doddering confused old man.

My father is 85 and he damn well knows what sodomy and child rape are. And he'd call BS on any adult who tried to claim they didn't know what it was or didn't understand man-boy sex.

xynix: Exactly. As if he were a senile old man for the past 15 years?

Actually, for the first half of the 2000's, a lot of fans were thinking he was a senile old man, and were starting the push to get him out...and then the team swung back to winning, and all was right in the world...at least until last year.
