Oh wait, swap Southampton with QPR on my list, forgot QPR barely survived last season. Also I think Real Madrid wins the Champs league this year as well.

2012-08-18 09:00:06 AM
Champs: mcfc

Champs league: united, Chelsea, honestly think 4th is a crapshoot, but let's of with Arsenal

Europa: totham, nufc, lpool. One will get in from the cups. Hopefully nufc.

Relegated: wigan, Swansea and reading.

If nufc can get through the season without any major injuries I think we've got a shot for fourth but considering we have no depth it's going to be tough.

2012-08-18 09:00:28 AM
Prediction: A manager will get fired, maybe two, even three; a player will suffer a horrific injury which will have us all wringing our hands over tackling; crappy teams will get relegated; and good teams will make it to Europe. I don't know why but for some reason this season feels really unpredictable to me.

2012-08-18 09:02:14 AM
And calling out predictions early, I'm gonna go with:

Champions: Manchester United

The fact that they were barely edged out last year on goal differential considering their injuries throughout the season and total loss of Vidic, they're coming out hard and gonna take back the title from City. Picking up Kagawa was a good move and Van Persie gave them a huge emotional lift. I predict that RvP will stay healthy this season and pitch in about 15-20 goals and their back line will be formidable. I doubt that they'll have as many injuries this year as last.

Top Four:

1. Manchester United
2. Arsenal
3. Chelsea
4. Manchester City

A lot of people think Arsenal is too high, City is too low and Chelsea is nearly impossible to predict. I'm stacking it like this because I believe that

Arsenal will have a better defense this year with fewer injuries (and Bould's coaching will help), Cazorla is a huge pickup and will transform the midfield, which had creative struggles last year, and Wilshere will come back.

Chelsea bought a whole lot of talent and I think they're showing will be better. I also think Torres will get his groove back. I'm still not sure about Di Matteo's coaching, but he did admirably last year and I think he'll do pretty well this year but we'll see how he does with a full season.

On paper, Manchester City is the team to beat, but they enjoyed last season with virtually no injuries and a bench that was stacked. Being hungry and winning a crown is one thing, defending it is another. I see them having some slip-ups this year, particularly if they have injuries to any of their key players. They stayed the same while all of their rivals improved.

2012-08-18 09:03:42 AM
Also agree with Liverpool and Tottenham in the Europa League spots.

Not as sure about relegation, but my guess would be:

West Brom
Reading
Southampton

Champs : liverpool (I told you last year that this year's our year)

CL spots: city, united, Chelsea

May I say, I'm kinda disappointed in RvP. Right move maybe. But I always thought he would be an arsenal man.

Goddamn I'm excited for this day!

Morning, farkers. Here for most of the 1st half of WBA v Liverpool before I must get ready for work.

Predictions that'll probably be utter shiat:

EPL Champions- Man City

2- ManU (Something will go wrong with the team and they'll be too saddled in debt to buy anyone in January)
3- Chelsea
4- Arsenal (in Wenger they should trust
5- Tottenham
6- Liverpool (contention for a spot in Europe on the final Sunday will be a successful season, in my book)

Relegation- QPR, Reading and WBA

I don't make predictions, and I never will.

City will win the league again. There's no reason why they won't. The first one is the hardest. I don't trust United anymore. Eight points clear with six games left will do that to you.

Team; Points; Player who will exceed expectations; Player who won't meet expectations.
1. Financial Dopers II; 90; Zabaleta; Rodwell.
2. Source of all that is good and pure in the world; 80+; Kagawa (if played in correct position); Sir Ryan Giggs, sadly.
3. Financial Dopers; 75; Oscar; Hazard.
4. The Captain Sellers; 70+; Cazorla; Podolski.
5. Tottenham; 67; Caulker; Parker.
6. Best team on Merseyside; 57; Gibson; Jelavic.
7. Second best team on Merseyside again; 55; Kelly; Reina again.
8. Newcastle; 50+ (isn't that a magazine?); Cabaye; Cisse (oh yeah, I went there).
9. Fulham; 45; one of the Irish lads; one of the non-Irish lads.
10. We play on the floor; 44; one of the big lads up front; one of the small lads not up front.
11. Sunderland; 43; David Meyler; Sessegnon.
12. Aston Villa; 42; Bent; Stephen Ireland again.
13. Fabio and Park; 41; Fabio and Park; everyone else.
14. Swansea; 40; Michu; one of those lads who has 90%+ passing success but nobody ever notices anything he does.
15. Just get relegated already; 40; Crouch; Delap.
16. Wigan; 40; McCarthy; Al Habsi.
17. Southampton; 39; Lallana; Rodriguez.
18. Reading; 36; Ian Harte (is still alive?); Pogrebniak.
19. West Brom; 34; Long; Odemwingie.
20. Championship players; 30; Butterfield; Holt.

Top scorer: Aguero (apologies for the lack of originality).

Player of the year: Aguero (apologies for the lack of originality).

First manager sacked: Di Matteo. The guy who had a lower points-per-game record than AVB.

Champions League: Real Madrid.

Hope for the season: that Tom Cleverley stays fit for 30+ league games. Everything else will take care of itself after that. It won't happen though.

2012-08-18 10:32:11 AM
Oh, let's give this a try, if only to see how wrong I am in 9 months.

Top 4 in EPL:
1) United
2) City
(insert plentiful breathing room here)
3) Arsenal
4) Chelsea
(don't have much faith in either Arsenal or Chelsea to be consistently good this season, but I have even less in Newcastle to repeat last season's run or anyone else to make the jump)

EPL Relegation:
18) Swansea
19) Wigan
20) Southhampton

Championship Promotion:
1) Blackburn
2) Cardiff
Playoff) Bolton, but the league is such a toss-up no one would surprise me here...

Champion's League: Bayern (simply because I dislike them)

Europa League: Porto

We can now safely conclude that none of these things will happen.

2012-08-18 10:33:36 AM

StRalphTheLiar: Song is a bigger loss than RvP in my opinion. Another season started with low expectations.

I love Song, but it's the last Dein client at Arsenal, and Dein has farked us on Thierry Henry, Adebayor, Clichy, and most recently Fabregas. Arsenal selling him now would save us the headache next summer that we've suffered the last two. If Song thinks he'll pull the same shiat, fark him. Sell him now and find someone proud to wear the shirt.

BVB is just fun to watch when they're on their game. That said, Bayern seems deeper, so the longer Dortmund stays in the league title race, the CL & the cup, the more I expect Bayern to reclaim the Bundesliga. If Dortmund is dumped early from the CL again, they could be hard to catch...

Late to the game, but ManU to win league, City, Chelsea, and Arsenal for CL, and West Ham, Southampton, and Norwich for the drop.

Now, for the aciton at hand, 3-0 for the Whites. Is this a team playing like it doesn't have to depend on Dempsey...or is Norwich just that bad?

Top 10 is a bit much, and I don't think they'll catch teams by surprise again. Should stay up, but I'd say 14-15 is more realistic. And yes, this is despite what they're doing to QPR right now...

Agreed. As a Bayern fan I hope BVB has a nice, long CL run.

That said, Reus is going to be huge for them.

Can't see that comment. If you mean this one: 'Unbelievable. Referee Phil Dowd is not making any friends among the Liverpool players and fans. Shane Long nips in to take possession off Martin Skrtel and falls under a flick from the Reds defender' then I'd suggest by unbelievable he meant surprising, and not a bad decision. Martin Keown agreed with both decisions for what it is worth.

That's the other reason why I'm pissed by this. We can't afford to give up what should be "easy" points. I don't think we have the talent to beat the Manchester clubs. We can give Arsenal a fight, I think, but if we play like this all year; then we'll be a bigger joke then we were last season.

I hate it when people suggest rule changes. I'd like to suggest a rule change. Why can't they let the physio on to tend to an injured player while play continues? They manage this in rugby where it's much more difficult to avoid the player.

Also, 64% - Van Persie (30 goals 9 assists) & Song (1 gl, 11 assts (4 for RVP)) scored or assisted 47 of Arsenal's 74 PL goals in 2011-12. Goners.

They do this sometimes, removing the player (seems like if he's near the sidelines) from the field of play, allowing it to resume. I'm not sure of the official ruling, however.

I think Everton will close the gap on them (even further) for those Euro League spots. It's still early though...

Ayatollah of Rock-n-Rolla: Big win for Fulham, and Big loss for Liverpool. What a great day. Now the two questions: Why would Dempsey want to go to that tire fire of a club now, and if he does, how much will Rodgers be forced to pay for him by Fenway Group.

Going to be a massive log jam at the top this year. Can't wait!

Like Liverpool, you'll be rebuilding. Need at least two more strikers and another centre-back. Europa?

I wouldn't say we're rebuilding, but you're probably right about Europa. I'd feel a lot better about their chances had Modric and Adebayor stayed. Siggurdsson is more of an attacker than a playmaker, and Defoe isn't a good enough #1 striker for the long-term, for me at least.

Then there's the... inconsistency at the back.

The Funny this is that I really don't have any ill will toward QPR. I hate Liverpool because, as mentioned before, they remind me of Notre Dame (first among many reasons), and there are some other clubs I tend to like and dislike more than others, but as a Fulham Fan, I have never really cared about QPR one way or another. Maybe if I lived in England it would be different.

15 mil for Song? I thought being good at business is why we can't be competitive.

Baically Diaby can't get injured, Wiltshere needs to be not injured and Arshavin and Chamake need to stop playing like they're injured. I think Bendnar is till on our books as well. Arteta and Ox will need to step up.

What, he looked passable in the Euro this summer, admittedly in mop up time. I will, however, withdraw the comment, as he has looked positively awful and lethargic so far. But you can't deny they are 1 good striker away from being scary with the summer additions. Now stop making me compliment Chel$ki, as a Fulham man it offends my sensibilities.

I set it for zero scoring in Week 1. I see that some of the midweek games count as Week 2. I suggest that we lay off until the round of games commencing 25th August - starting with Swansea Vs West Ham at 1245 BST.

Unfreakable - can we pre-book a fitba thread, starting early next Saturday so as to give people a window in which to sign up?

The passing was not as crisp, and careless at times, but the formation stood tall
Torres did the best he could to get that almost goal
Wigan has a good attack, and should be competitive this season

Aguero looks like he may have torn his knee there. That would suck if he's out for a stretch.

I was talking more about the 'scarier than last season' part. Kittens were scarier than Chelsea last year. You made it sound like it would be impressive if they were scarier, whereas I think it would be damn near impossible for them not to be. But then I don't like complimenting them either :)

Yep and Barca were odds on to win La Liga and the CL last season as well. That went well.

Barca need a real defense and to put the ball in the box far more often. Having 60% possesion is all well and good but if its all spent in your own half you can't win games.

2012-08-19 06:01:28 PM
Barca need a real defense

Huh. I'd happily take my chances on a team with Pique,Puyol,Alves,Abidal,Alba and Mascherano. That's just me though, I guess.

2012-08-19 06:23:57 PM
Well, the one conclusion I can draw from today is we may be a little richer, we may be attracting a different class of player and manager, but we're still City at heart.

drewogatory: Barca need a real defense

Huh. I'd happily take my chances on a team with Pique,Puyol,Alves,Abidal,Alba and Mascherano. That's just me though, I guess.

Mascherano is not a defender, he is a midfielder. Of that list only Pique, Poyol and Abidal are actual defenders, the others only do a poor impression of a defender in the short periods when the oposition have the ball and Pique wasn't good enough at the time to play in Man Utds defense.

Barc's main defensive plan is not to let the other team have the ball in their half. That works against the poor teams in the lower reaches of La Liga and the CL but up against a world class outfit they get found out.

Kagawa is going to be a bigger difference-maker for ManU than Van Persie.

Really like what I see from Everton.

Glad I went with the Sky stream then haha. I think Everton has been the marginally better side, which you would expect of a home opener. Both teams have had good chances though and I hope we get some goals in the second half.

I've been really impressed with Kagawa and can't wait to see where he goes. Baines and Disdan have also been amazing.

shanghaistu: Not good for Man U fans when De Gea is our man of the half.

Disagree. He's obviously bulked up and is looking confident, not to mention pulling off some fine saves. You can't win the league if you leak goals like a sieve. As for predicting a disappointing season based on the first 45 minutes, especially since we're known for starting slowly, that just seems overly pessimistic to me.

Kagawa looking sharp, both teams playing really hard. Everton has had more chances, but De Gea is playing great.

I think you bolster the midfield first or the back. Bring in Rafael for welbeck and push up Valencia. Then maybe bring in RVP for Nani.

Oof, Flamani puts everton up 1. He's had a great game and it was coming.

For a team so dependent on wingers, United's crosses and corners were beyond awful.

If someone made a Hillsborough joke, they know damn well what they're talking about.

Someone saying 'ManUre' could be, and probably is, not aware of its use in taunts about the Munich disaster.

Even ESPN, in their great wisdom, abbreviate Manchester United to MANU. I learned long ago that many fans (although not all) take offense to "Man U" so I actually take pains to write it out or write "Utd."

But please don't equate ManUre with Hillsborough jokes. One is intentionally mocking a tragedy. The other, especially on a website that is mostly American, is a mocking statement (like say, Liverpoop) that might be inadvertantly offensive to some people.

There have been unpleasant chants about virtually every topic - injuries, deaths, murders, rapes. Certainly Hillsbrough, certainly Heysal, certainly fans burning to death at Bradford or being crushed at Ibrox. Little is sacred to a crowd who's blood is up.

All clubs have their legends about being slighted by fans of other clubs - this is one. Newcastle equivalents include Millwall and Leeds.

Sorry, it's not an urban myth. Bear in mind the age of this chant. I have not heard it in 28 years of attending and watching games. It was my Dad (supporter for 54 years) who told me about it when telling off one of my school friends for calling us Man Ure. Not a citation, but that's when I became aware of it. I'm not really bothered by the shortening to "Man U" or "Man United" as others are, I just find the link to Duncan Edwards and Munich pathetic and will call people on it.

You'll notice that I said "ignorant" for my hypothetical supporter? So that hypothetical still stands. If someone doesn't know about Hillsborough - and there are millions who don't "know damn well what they're talking about" - and makes a joke then they should be educated about the origin. They could be unaware, so by your standards if they are then it's ok to make the joke and not be told about any issues about it?

I'm struggling with how you differentiate Hillsborough and Munich. Innocents died in both, no? So mocking Munich is still mocking a tragedy. I'm interested why you think one is fair game and the other isn't. Is it quantity of victims? What's the cut off point? Is the national make-up of the website a factor? How is that quantified? To my mind neither should be mocked. Wordplay like "Liverfool" is not making any mention of dead inncocents, is it? Tell me if I'm wrong. Please don't equate wordplay with the Munich air disaster in which 23 people died. I'd be interested to see you refute this.

As I said above, I'm not really bothered by the shortening to "Man U" or "Man United" as others are, I just find the link to Duncan Edwards pathetic and will call people on it so I have no issue with ESPN's label or even the name of the site www.manutd.com.

You can't have looked very hard. Granted, there's nothing hugely impartial but there are numerous accounts of what I've said. Here's an interesting experiment: Go to Old Trafford on a match day and ask a supporter what they think of people calling United ManUre. You'll be told in no uncertain terms.

As for mocking the 96, a tabloid didn't do that but did cast aspersions on Liverpool supporters in the wake of the tragedy and the whole city boycotted it. There was also the kid a few years ago who got the derogatory shirt printed up. But that's exactly the point: people don't generally mock Hillsborough, and with very good reason. Why should the same not hold true for victims of Munich? Because you can't find it on the internet, therefore it can't be true? That's a weak defense. Whatever makes you feel better though. Let us know how your trip to Salford goes.

My point was the following:

1) People who say "Man U" or "ManUre" are probably unaware of the horrible songs mocking the Munich tragedy. "Man U" is actually very common, even among fans. I, even as a Liverpool fan, know that the term is not welcome in many areas of Manchester United fandom. So I don't say Man U. But a lot of people do, and it's not meant to mock Munich, usually.

2) Saying "Man U" or some variation thereof (and I am not including actual chants making fun of the Munich crash here, just that it is a common notation for the club) might be intended to be offensive, but it usually isn't.

3) Mocking the victims of Hillsborough is never unintentional. "96 is not enough" is not unintentional. "How many dead scousers pressed against a fence..." jokes are not unintentional. To even compare someone randomly saying "ManUre" to Hillsborough chants is insulting.

TL;DR: "ManUre" =/= "LOL Hillsborough! Squish squish!"

Did I go full hate? I don't think I did. Please show me where the statement "That's from a chant by some opposition fans referencing Duncan Edwards rotting in his grave after Munich. /To the credit of folks here, I don't recall ever seeing anything on Fark
//I've definitely heard stuff though since at least 1992 (my first trip to England). Even a casual Google search shows dozens of hits from the past couple years alone

Thanks. Please stay Fellaini.

Everton won a hard-fought game. They earned every one of those three points. Cheers to your boys

I think one of my posts was deleted

or I typed it out, reviewed it and in my drunken state forgot to post it

whatever, my point was people who say Man U might not know that particular term could be offensive. People who use Hillsborough in chants do. Using either tragedy to rally your team is disgusting.

No, I'm not joking. Of course if you're going to be pedantic and infer that I meant one NEVER encounters mockery of Hillsborough then there is little I can do about that save point out that I myself pointed out an example of just that earlier ITT. But ss that a common occurrence? "Dozens"? That can be attributed to the normal amount of absolute dickheads in the population and it is a far cry from being in something as widespread as a football chant.

However, I'm sure your fleeting experiences of England are representative and my experiences over the 30 years out of the last 35 that I've lived here are somehow not.

This is the same point you made yesterday which I refuted: "If someone doesn't know about Hillsborough - and there are millions who don't "know damn well what they're talking about" - and makes a joke then they should be educated about the origin. They could be unaware, so by your standards if they are then it's ok to make the joke and not be told about any issues about it?"

You're labouring under the misapprehension that Hillsborough is well known throughout the world. It's not. It is to fans of English football of a certain age but it's simply not known by everybody to the extent you think it is. The kid who made the offensive shirt for the cretin I mentioned earlier printed it in complete ignorance due to a lack of interest in football. Just because you're aware of it doesn't mean others are.

And this isn't about the term "Man U". Are you even reading my posts?!

The Envoy: As I said above, I'm not really bothered by the shortening to "Man U" or "Man United" as others are, I just find the link to Duncan Edwards pathetic and will call people on it so I have no issue with ESPN's label or even the name of the site www.manutd.com.
