Yeah, bunch of fat pussies who barely set foot outside mom's basement saying that these total badasses are only getting recognition because they're black.

I don't know how they have time to post between watching Stormfront for new posts and fapping to Lexington Steele videos.

From WikipediaA Congressional Gold Medal is an award bestowed by the United States Congress and is, along with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States.

Civilian award, for Marines ?

not trolling here but wouldn't a military honor been more appropriate?

Just give everyone that ever served a good conduct medal, provided they did not frag their commander, and you have covered all bases.

No, there were no black Marines in the 2nd Mar Div when they landed at Tarawa, Saipan, 7 months later was the first time they participated in a battle.

The positive thinking guy in me says "well done, Marines!"

The cynic in me says we should brace ourselves for the inevitable blockbuster war film about a group of black marine recruits who find out that racism can be harder to defeat than the entire Japanese Empire, while learning that friendship and teamwork are all you need to fight them both. To be followed by an orthopedic surgeon's wet dream as everyone in Hollywood simultaneously breaks their arms patting themselves on the back for making a film that promotes racial tolerance- never realizing how farking offensive and condescending it actually is. Oh, and the movie will bear no relationship to any events that occurred, other than the fact that the segregated units actually existed.

But from the positive thinking guy in me: "Well done, Marines! (And I'm sorry if your service and sacrifice get exploited to sell movie tickets.)"

Every chance I get. Twice on Sundays.

But my point remains. Why do this? So we can all feel good about ourselves for being progressive and politically correct? So that the involved politicians can smile for the cameras and drum up positive PR for their next election? It was 60 years ago. Again, who cares?

I could understand if they were being awarded for a specific military action, similar to how soldiers get medals for being injured in combat, etc. But this is just a touchy feely civilian award for not dropping out of boot camp because it was hard. Seriously. Their NCOs made boot camp extra tough (because they were racist) and these guys toughed it out. Congratulations. Here's your medal. Smile big for the cameras.

The only reason this is in the news at all is because something something racism. Or something.

Doubtful. Neither of my grandfathers (both army) got one, nor will they posthumously. Same for my uncles. I'd imagine that if you were part of a unit that broke a barrier or did something above and beyond, then you'd get recognized.

My thoughts exactly... It'll be directed by Spike Lee who will put his own twist on it, which will unfortunately diminish the accomplishments of these guys.
And much like that horrible film Red Tails, all the actors will carry the swagger of 21st century NBA players.

Good for these Marines to prove the racists wrong, but Hollywood is going to fark this up badly.

Emposter: Can Congress even give military honors?

Um, it's called the CONGRESSIONAL Medal of Honor for a reason.

Congress can pass a law giving itself the authority to bestow any honor on anyone for any reason (subject to veto), with the exception of a title of nobility.

apres_ski_god: Good for these Marines to prove the racists wrong, but Hollywood is going to fark this up badly.

Of course they will, it's Hollywood. Facts take a backseat to storytelling and narrative progression. The 'black soldiers overcoming racism' formula is long established.

With tens to hundreds of millions of dollars on the line, studios are loathe to take a chance to deviate from a winning formula. The purpose of movies is to make money for their investors. As long as enough people buy the ticket (and the blu-ray and maybe some tie-in merchandise), the producers don't give a flying fark about quality or originality.

Emposter: Can Congress even give military honors?

It's not a military honor. It's a civilian honor.
It's the highest civilian award Congress can bestow. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor the President can bestow.

While it is an honor, honoring Marines with a civilian award seems like a backhanded way to honor them.
