I've examined the one tax return Romney has released, and it is obvious that it is a forgery! The space between lines 23 and 24 on page 76 is too wide, the numbers on pages 23, 89, 109 and 233 have been manipulated in Photoshop, there are too many layers when converted to ASIS, there is no company called, Consolidated Holdings and Management, as seen on page 357, and the signature is clearly written backwards and upside down on the acknowledgement page. Buy my book, available now for the special low price of $23.55, for all this proof and more. Also, my friend, the Sheriff of Northharbor, who will be holding a 2 hour talk/press conference in 20 minutes, has done an exhaustive $50,000 taxpayer-funded investigation and agrees with me, and Attorney/Dentist/Interior decorator, Missy Ipswitch has filed suit in Federal Court to prevent Romney from getting on all the state ballots.

Yeah, not even close.

3) I don't even know what you're talking about in regard to "stolen retirement accounts"
4) Any Econ 101 student knows the trillion dollar deficits come from the Bush tax cuts, Medicare Part D and the two wars Bush started

Non story. His team of accountants claimed residency in one state over another for tax purposes, and when Romney wanted to run for governor he amended the tax returns to claim residency in Massachusetts, at which point he amended his tax liability.

Romney owned a house and lived in Boston for 30 years, and the two years in question that resulted in amended tax returns were during his Utah Olympics stint. It's not like he had just moved into the state and thought he deserved to be in office, like a Clinton. Democrats already took those tax returns to the State Ballot Law Commission before the election and guess what? They lost.

When you guys get all circle-jerky with each other does the room start to smell funny? Or does the patchouli hide it?

But the fact that he is so adamant about not releasing them indicates that there is more to it than just using the system to his advantage. As I said, all it could take to sway those lower-information voters is one big juicy thing in those tax records. His reticence leads me to believe there are several, and that is why I think continuing to pressure him to release them is a worthwhile endeavor.

/Yeah, went there, wanna fight about it?

What a long strange thread this has been.

Seriously, asking for Romney's tax returns = Birtherism?

Go on pull the other one, it has bells on it.

Here's the deal, Obama is campaigning on making the tax laws fairer and more progressive.

Mitt Romney's taxes, should they be released, would be a case in point example of why this needs to occur.

The guy put together a 100 million dollar IRA for himself while getting a 100 million dollar (tax free) trust fund together for his kids and also spent over 100 million of his own money running for the GOP POTUS nom in 2008.

And this guy wants to go even further and eliminate estate taxes, eliminate or lower capital gains taxes and legalize gawd knows what other loopholes/ technically legal/morally reprehensible dodges and tax avoidance schemes cos he thinks the board isn't already tilted far enough in his favour?

[donotwant]

Moronic RW trolls ITT pretending there's no co-relation between Romney's taxes and the kind of policies he'd like to enact as POTUS are not fooling anyone, except possibly themselves.

Romney is a serial liar who's expressly seeking power to further enrich himself and the rest of the 1%.

You'd have to be a brain dead partisan hack to even think about cutting your own throat by voting for this ticket.

This is hysterical:

1) The economy/the unemployment rate -- economy nose dived under Bush. When Obama took office unemployment was surging upward and the DOW was approaching it's lowest point since the mid-90s. Things have been reversed. All you can do is complain that the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression has not been reversed fast enough.

2) Fast and Furious -- This was a Bush program. And investigations have revealed that the Obama Admin didn't do anything wrong.

3) Stolen retirement accounts -- Have no clue what you're referring to here.

4) Trillion dollar deficits -- Seriously? The deficit is where it is today thanks to the pointless Iraq war, the non-funded medicare part d expansion, and tax cuts for the 1% -- all done under Bush. And the bank bailout, also Bush.

5) Backdoor amnesty -- Well, this is more of a public policy issue. Obama believes that people brought here when they were children and have lived in the United States all of their lives shouldn't be punished for their parents' crimes. He and the Democrats have proposed legislation to create a path to citizenship for these people, but the GOP has blocked them. Thus, he has created a way to prevent them from being deported while hopefully Congress can workout a plan for them.

MmmmBacon: I look at it this way: Every Presidential candidate as far back as I can remember (that's to Nixon, by the way) has released their tax returns during the election, if I recall correctly. It's a simple matter of putting everything on the table to show the American public that they are "clean", in a financial sense. But Mitt Romney refuses to do this, for his own reasons, and I can respect that. I hope he also respects that I will assume Mr. Romney has something to hide that would cost him the election, should those tax returns become public, because I have nothing to dissuade me from that notion... such as his tax returns being made public.

What I don't want to see is this become a Birther movement, if Romney were somehow to win the election, though. While I think it is clearly shady as hell that Romney doesn't want to release his tax returns, I hope that we don't see a group of people that goes Full Derp about it, allowing it to plague our national discourse for at least four years, like the Birthers did to Obama.

We Progressives need to be better than that.

You know what Progessives *get* for being "better than that"?

Bullshiat he did, it was only after a lot of biatching that he finally caved in and did.

And that's the difference between birthers and the people who want to see Romney's returns. Has nothing to do with race, but I get it... when a liberal can't argue validly they accuse the debater as racist. Seen it over and over this year.

Pretty sure Obama never promised to exile people from D.C., but let's put that one aside for now. So should he have treated his campaign promises like Romney treats his tax info? Write it down, lock it up, and refuse to let anybody see it?

The definition of "republican" is "can't argue validly".

This is the Birther situation:

Birthers: "WHAR IS BIRF CIRTIFAKIT?"

Obama: "Here you go"

Birthers: "WHAR IZ LONG FORM BIRF CIRTIFIKAT?"

Obama: "Seriously? Fine, here it is."

Birthers: "THIZ IZ FOTOSHOEPPD. I CAN TELL BY TEH PIXIES"

This is the R. Money situation:

Public: "When your father ran for office, he disclosed his tax records. When will you follow suit, Mr. Romney?"

Mitt: "Here's one tax return form that was filled out in crayon by my youngest son. Look at the cute puppy he drew on the back! Isn't that adorable?"

Public: "You're going to have to do better than that."

Mitt: "How dare you! I am a rich white male, and therefore everything I say is to be trusted without question!"

By the way, I really love the way people are trying to equate this with birtherism:

Step 1: Act outrageously in your attempt to disqualify a presidential candidate
Step 2: Watch as your illogical special pleading is kicked to the curb by facts and the public at large
Step 3: Compare any future attacks against your future candidate to your own bad behavior in an attempt to nullify those attacks.

THERE IS NO SUCH INVESTIGATION OF ROMNEY FOR ANY OF HIS RETURNS.

Romney is the most boxed-in candidate I've ever seen from either party. His history as governor of Massachusetts is toxic, his work in the private sector is toxic, his investment history is toxic ... he might end up running his whole campaign on "remember that one Utah olympics?", but he took a massive federal bailout for it so that's toxic too. He has no record he can talk about and has no platform to discuss.

Cons are complaining that the left is making too big a deal out of Romney's taxes, but what's left to talk about? RomneyCare? Ryan's budget? His desire to shift the tax burden off of himself and onto the middle class? Destroying Medicare? His disastrous trip to Europe and Israel? His $100 million IRA?

can you imagine the GOP response if it were obama not releasing his tax returns?

I'm pretty sure "you guys, uh, shouldn't even be talking about this! Yeah! Look over there!" is basically mycatisposter's way of giving up the argument.

Its like a stupid checklist at this point in the thread:

'Hey, look over there!'
'Both sides are bad!'
'Its just like birth cerificates!'
'It happened X amount of time ago, so it doesn't matter!'
'Everyone lies, so that makes it ok!'
'He did nothing wrong and you libtards are to blame!'

On another note, not including the admins lovefest for rightwing bs, have the rightwingers here become bigger asshole liars than usual this week?

Well If Obama would just release his macaroni art none of this would have to be, much lies inside childhood art work we can see the mind of the man who was raised in a madrassa and willingly faked his birth certificate as away to get affirmative action scholarships so he could spread his own version of the SS (sharia socialism in this case). All of this was done so he could get enough power to enact several false flag operations to make it appear that Romney isn't being honest with his taxes, but that is just a set up as we know the truth is that Obama is a gay Kenyan.

gadian: Tor_Eckman: You and I know it. But believe it or not, there are a lot of people out there that don't pay much attention to these things until something big and flashy happens. Romney tax records more than likely contain some big, flashy things. He even said himself that he doesn't want to release them because they will be used against him. If that isn't enough to convince you that there is information in there that will sway some "undecideds", I don't know what will.

I guess my issue is that I don't fully appreciate that there are still some who will actually vote and who are undecided one way or another. More information is always best and, rationally, there really is no reason for him to not release the returns because it is something every candidate is expected to do and not birther bullshiat. I'm still not sure what effect "He claimed HOW MANY millions in tax exemptions?" is going to have on the population because that much money simply isn't "real" to most people.

Again, it's so much about the fact that he has taken advantage of the current and past tax laws. Most people know about that and either care or don't care. And he knows this.

Maybe it would be quicker for Romney to write up a list of the things we are allowed to talk about?

He also believes in-vitro fertilization is a crime because it necessarily disenfranchises fertilized eggs (which he considers to be people). This is the procedure that the Romneys used to have their children. And Romney believes that Ryan should be ineligible for the office of the President because he hasn't spent at least three years working in the private sector. So you can see why Ryan was chosen for the ticket.

Him demanding other's tax returns makes him a hypocrite, not in and of itself ineligible to be President. Just like if I were to ask to see your cards after a successful bluff by you. If you show me, that's great, but it doesn't obligate me to show you mine when the opposite happens. Just means I would be acting like a lame-o and not qualified to be my President.

He isn't pleading the 5th. He's said repeatedly that there is nothing untoward in his tax returns and we just have to take his word for it. TFA is about the fact that the last time Romney said there was nothing fishy in his tax returns there was something fishy in his tax returns. He has directly been caught lying about this exact issue before so we would be wise not to trust his word this time.
