You'd also need to convince them that a black, fetid, disease-filled river full of excrement and corpses isn't a good place for a sacred bath and drink.
Ugh... just thinking about that place makes me want to vomit.

Give it 10-20 years if certain groups get their way, and no new taxes here in the US.

We'll be right there with them.

He's out there riding a Vespa. I talked to his father. He should have been home three hours ago.

Yeah but look at the glorious crap filled world they live in....they don't have all the shiatty regulations we have over here. Imagine if the government stepped in and regulated his job out of existence? Such draconian job killing legislature would put these men out of jobs and would mean the loss of thousands of rupees per year. So maybe you should rethink that statement about their infrastructure. We could learn a thing or poo from India.

Imagine what wealth and quality of life improvement could be made if India spent the money to put in a proper sewage infrastructure. These people's jobs would go from wading in excrement to something more like what the people in united states do to poorly maintain our sewers.

You don't ban what they do, you make improvements to infrastructure so they don't have to do horrible things, they just have to maintain the infrastructure instead.

I'm sure Obama is flying union and community organizers over there on a taxpayer-funded junket to organize the turd herders. Michelle will meanwhile vacation in Nepal, Tokyo, and Olongapo in her $5000 Tshirts that the taxpayers are forced to pay for.

And destroy a noble native tradition going back to the very dawn of Indian poop tubes? What's next, replacing Maldivian pearl divers with oyster farms and German brewers with the cool, refreshing taste of Bud Lite Lime?

Yeah, but does he have a micro-managing boss wandering around asking everyone what they're currently working on and then telling them to drop that and immediately work on something else?

2012-08-18 08:51:33 AM
There is simply no rule of law in India -- graft and corruption are rampant -- and a jillion hungry people. Combine the two and there is no way to get large scale public works projects off the ground.

The $100s of millions required to build a proper urban sewer system would get siphoned off to the point where the "project" would be down to a couple mostly naked guys with shovels. So giving a couple mostly naked guys sticks and telling them to handle the flow sans late 19th c. infrastructure seems pretty efficient in comparison.

It's public works project. One or two guys do the work, and the boss and the others stand around watching.
