I think that anyone who does a highly good act should be forgiven for any more minor slights. That means we give clemency for good Samaritans for any pending past acts below the level they are responsible for preventing, or a pass at any one future misdemeanor. It's a means of promoting good actions in the population.

Road workers, field researchers and anyone else who goes around areas that aren't frequented by normal people run into strange situations all the time. One of my co-workers was doing research in a remote area and ran into a lost hiker. He was very grateful for the free ride back to town, not to mention lucky (co-worker could have been miles from that spot, went there by random chance).

Another time my co-worker and I were doing field research and found a book bag that had been dumped there. It looked like the thief had thought there was a laptop inside and grabbed it, then opened it to only find books and papers and tossed it out of the getaway car.
