Ariel is the final product in that picture. The message is that she is the ideal. There has been no work done on the original Ariel. the mermaid on the table is supposed to be a normal woman, ie the viewer of the ad. It's a metaphor.

MLP is innocent, happy, and well, child-like. It's reminiscent of when times were simple and easy as a kid and teenager.
Adding eroticism to that really isn't strange at all. Look at the various cheerleaders and other teenaged "normal" porn, or the submissive aspect of many genres. Maybe you want to take a break from the mating dance and just focus on pure emotional fantasy without responsibilities.

They don't focus on the anthropomorphic horses as much as they see well-written (from what I hear, still haven't managed to watch this series) characters that they have developed empathy towards.

People don't outgrow this stuff. Look at how men treat their cars or electronics, even referring to them as "her".

Because The Little Mermaid is just too tragic a story of impossible love the way it was, an American animation company bereft of original premises ~~gave it a Brazillian butt job~~ completely changed the end.

If Disney ever does Romeo and Juliet, it will have a talking monkey, and the suicides will be replaced by a wedding where the Montagues and Capulets do an uptempo show tune with a rap section.
