2012-08-17 09:26:56 AM
And this is why I think affirmative action is nothing more than racism under a more popular name. Idiocy.

2012-08-17 09:26:59 AM
Did anyone else notice said groups also had a 4 year run, this was decided two years ago, and other schools will be doing it when they haven't been?

This smells like manufactured outrage.

2012-08-17 09:27:00 AM
They had a multi-year run, the festival went in a new direction. BFD.

2012-08-17 09:29:17 AM
Wait, you mean schools in predominantly white Cobb County might have choruses that reflect that? OUTRAGE!!

2012-08-17 09:31:53 AM
Fake!

That's unpossible because only the "dominant" "majority" of "whites" is capable of racism.

Who cares how long the run was? The fact is, the symphony made the statement that the school's chorus was not diverse enough.

That makes it a racial issue. Not a talent issue. Not a longevity issue.

As Gandhi famously said about Western culture, I think it would be a good idea.

Ok, this pissed me off immediately. Faking political correctness is so moronic! As someone who lives in east Cobb County, where these two high schools are located, I can tell you that it is impossible for the schools to be racially diverse. This is a very affluent area and we simply do not have many Blacks, Hispanics or Asians It's a function of economics, not racial discrimination. The area has a median income of $92K and while Atlanta is a city that has a healthy and growing Black middle class, they have not started moving out to Cobb yet. Most of the Asians live in Chamblee. Most of the Hispanics are in Buford and other areas. There is one Black and two Asian families in my neighborhood. And who the hell is the ASO to complain about a lack of racial diversity? It isn't as if they aren't almost pure white, except for the occasional visiting musician.

For what it is worth, the public schools in east Cobb are among the best in the state, with rather good music programs. So this is ASO's loss. Too bad the innocent student are being punished.

I'd just like to point out to all of us that got the headline, that song is about 22 years old.

Now get off my lawn.

2012-08-17 09:39:49 AM
I bet if it were an all black chorus, it wouldn't have been a problem.

And how much diversity is 'diverse enough'? Is there a set guideline like your group must be 40% male, 40% female, 40% Hispanic, 40% black, 40% Asian, 40% American Indian, and have a .04% Pacific Islander impurity?

2012-08-17 09:40:01 AM
That's your punishment for not supporting MARTA, Cobb County.

2012-08-17 09:40:29 AM
If TFA is any indication, it sounds like diversity is more of a pretext here than anything else, and that the actual goal is in the sentence "We think it's time to give other Atlanta high school choirs, who are very skilled and deserving, their chance to perform with the ASO as well."

In other words, everybody gets a trophy.

Once upon a time they'd have been turned away for being "too ethnic."

Now we have the new anti-Anglo racism couched in the very progressive "not diverse enough."

Bullshiat is bullshiat.

So, easy problem to solve. Just explain that some of the kids are Russian, some are from the Neatherlands, a few are from South Africa, some are Australian, and some are Carribian albino's. Boom, cultural and racial diversity...
Think outside of the box people.

I believe it was one of Atlanta's favorite sons who once had the dream that his "children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

There's Chick-Fil-A sandwiches involved in this somehow.

I agree that after a four year run the chance should be given to other schools, but for that reason, not because a school is mostly any race. You could never ever get away with saying the school that is all black is not diverse enough. When will white people stand up against racism pointed at their children? this kind of thing will continue as long as white people refuse to make a big deal out of it. If it was a black school al sharpton and others would be there flipping out. Racism is racism no matter who is the target.

I should add that if the ASO is so concerned about the lack of diversity in Cobb, they should vacate the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center immediately and set up on the hood or someplace a lot less lilly-white.

I think the others were already considered divers' not because they had "white" kids in the group but because they had a divers' selection of other races that fall under protected status.

So basically the did not have to do anything.

Maybe if they took Screwdriver off their song list they might recruit some non-whites.

2012-08-17 09:53:23 AM
So...only the white choirs should be allowed to sing with the Atlanta Symphony?

That's the issue. The same choirs were getting picked every year, which just happened to be all white. The Atlanta Symphony wanted to get schools involved from other, more diverse, parts of Atlanta as well.

But some of you apparently think it's horrible that kids from mixed schools might get to sing with the orchestra. Shocking, that.

Well is the issue that the same schools get picked every year and others should have the opportunity? Because that's a issue of fairness.

If it's about making sure the not-white choirs are involved, specifically because they're not white, then it's racism. And fark your racism. Real hard. In the ass. With an oboe.

They must be considering liberals as the minority here. Very few liberals in Cobb County, especially those 2 schools who are full of the rich folks.
