Apple's going to announce whatever this STB winds up being to great fanfare, and your cable company still won't offer it.

Same as it ever was.

Does this mean that channels will no longer take up 1/4 of the screen with ads for up comming shows or cover content with their logo? This is the worst thing to happen to tv in the last 20 years. Please write your favorite network and ask them to stop.

Apple immediately files patents on the DVR, streaming, and the cloud. All other HTPCs are now poor copies of Apple's original product and require licensing fees.

A simple request to stop promoting one show during another? I'm sure they'd laugh it off. But I feel your pain - it's one reason why I prefer stream and download.

At the time Voyager started, my friend described it in one:
Gilligan's Island in Space.

in the end, most of the stories were about pretend solutions to get them home, which always had a miracle failure at the end of the show.

There were more than a few early episodes that felt more the The Odyssey in space. Which I had absolutely no problem with.

It's a shame that they couldn't keep that up for the entire series.

The evolution of the Voyager series was interesting. The most annoying character became one of the most interesting (The Doctor), the throwaway/comic relief character never went away and became more ingratiating (Neelix), the angry biatch got promoted (Torres), the ladies man married the biatch (Paris), the smirking guy became the most boring (Chakotay), the hypothetical virgin never got promoted (Kim), and the one who didn't make much sense (Kes) left early and was replaced by a character with a lot of potential (7 of 9). She did fill out the T&A factor nicely, but they also gave her good stories and introduced new (some say destructive) nuances to the Borg. That show became entirely about good writing and bad actors. If they gave Beltran a somewhat decent story, he couldn't make it work for the life of him. Jeri Ryan was actually a decent actress with a good screen presence, and Picardo always stole the scene. Mulgrew was just Mulgrew all the way, no character development or interesting twist whatsoever.

The only thing that ruined it was the deus ex machina series finale, which surprisingly became a damn good series of follow up Next Gen novels.

th0th: Jeri Ryan was actually a decent actress with a good screen presence

I thought her character was the most interesting and no, not just because of those. And yeah, she was a good actor, especially when she had to break character. There was an episode where the Doctor "possessed" her and Jeri did a great impression of him. And if that's her real voice, she's also a pretty good singer.

The "Gilligan's Isle" factor did get annoying but it really wasn't that many episodes. But they were kind of all the same, "We found a gateway/wormhole/conduit that will take us home". "Good, let's destroy it for ethical reasons!". But overall I've appreciated it more upon watching it again on Netflix. The last 4 seasons anyway.

Right, we all know that. Although it's more accurate to say that it more generically resembles *any* similar pad. (2001, anyone?) I think it's reaching more than a little bit to suggest that an Apple implementation of the Roku concept can even be laughingly characterised as, "the next phase of Star Trek technology." First of all, the 'next' part is absurd. Pads are not new, and Apple didn't invent them. Porting pad-style user I/O to a Roku-style TV interface is exactly that; there's nothing at all 'next'-ish about it, especially concerning a relationship to Star Trek that was pointed out long ago (and isn't really very relevant anyway, since Star Trek was not unique in the concept even in the '60s, just better known). Second, what the hell is 'next phase' supposed to mean, anyway? Subby seems to have pulled a random, futuristic-sounding buzzword phrase out of his/her/its ass and crudely slapped it in there. It makes no real sense, no matter how you try to parse it.

I guess my real point is that subbies are lazy and stupid, and need to try a little harder. At least try to make some sense, if that's not asking too much. Also, Apple fanboys are even more annoying than usual when they play fast and loose with the language. They often don't seem to understand either, but it would be nicer for the rest of us if they didn't make a point of proving it.

The inventor of the iPod saw an episode of TNG where Data walks in his room and tells the computer to play music, and the computer asks which kind etc. He saw a situation where all the music ever created was stored digitally and could be accessed any time by category, artist etc. That's what motivated him to create digital storage devices for music.

Meh. Pass.

All we really need is Netflix with better licensing clout, slightly better customer service (ie, some), and software that understands the difficult concepts of (A) user controls and (B) caching.

Wat. Seriously? That's a horrible story. Why doesn't Apple just hire people who have studied design, then? Or read SF? Because those ideas were already prevalent in the 1970s (and not new then) and hardly new in TNG.

Besides, Sony and Phillips (and probably others) had both displayed non-working Future Portable Stereo concepts like that by the mid-80s. What made the iPod remarkable is that Jobs guessed, correctly, that people would pay hundreds of dollars for one, whereas Sony didn't bother building one because they were convinced it would be another five years before the cost would be palatable to the market.
