I'd ask why a cop was arresting someone for a chalk drawing but...this is Pennsylvania. we're an authoritarian police state.

Watch where you walk cause there's sidewalk chalk and you can't keep a secret from the ground beneath you.

From the article linked to in the article: "Donnelly said last week that police had filed charges because it was "an attempt at vandalism" that could lead to the teens using more permanent media."

This reminds me of the time I was arrested for taking Tylenol because it might lead to using illegal drugs.

And the residents are asking for more protection.

Philadelphia residents and park lovers are asking city leaders to better protect their favorite spaces. At a committee hearing Thursday, members of Philadelphia City Council heard testimony about problems at the city's parks and public recreation facilities - after a rash of crimes at some of those sites.

Donnelly said last week that police filed charges because it was an attempt at vandalism. He also said the doodles might link the teens to chalk graffiti on local businesses and buildings.

Yeah, Porky, you're going to break this chalk graffiti syndicate wide open.

Police are the most useless members of society.

It's all well and good until you are in a hurry to get somewhere and you run across a field of hopscotch courts. Like time sucking land mines

They were drawing sea turtles and whales?

Those aren't teenagers. Those are 9 y/o girls trapped in the body of teenagers.

I wonder how long before kids start getting arrested for drawing in the sand?

Chalk graffiti? That must pi$$ store owners off as they spray the gang signs off with a water hose instead of a sand blaster.

Really? Sounds to me like someone who can't pass a hopscotch court without suddenly becoming 10 years old again.

When the frackers manage to poison the NYC-Philly reservoir this will all be forgotten.

Of course, cop salaries are lower in other parts of the country.

As long as it is not obscene or vulgar and not on someone's property (but on public property), who cares. Seriously, if they go after people for doing that, they should go after Crayola for making these:

Next time they'll just get them for loitering, trespassing, disobeying an officer, littering, panhandling, disturbing the peace, no permit for street art, and whatever else they can throw against the wall to see what sticks.

Sidewalk chalking isn't a gateway to tagging and spray painting buildings. If the police don't understand this, they have no business in law enforcement.

They knew the charges were bogus, and maybe figured that they would just pay the fine and go away. Probably were trying to get a rise out of them so that they could escalate things as well.

The problem really is pretty bad, In no time they'll be tagging walls with tic-tac-toe matrices.

It's an alkaline war. This is a blatant attempt by calcium carbonate adherents to persecute those who use calcium sulfate.

I wish the Austin police and DA would figure the same thing out. A good number of folks were arrested recently for drawing and writing on Austin's sidewalks with chalk.

Search "chalkupy" if you want to know more.

So, strangely, a highlight of my trip to Minneapolis last week was finding Chalkupy tags on the Hennepin Bridge and across from the Fed. I don't actually get out much, so it was interesting to see it so far from L.A.

There's a huge difference, too, between being in Philadelphia and in Doylestown. We're talking central/upper Bucks county, which is not exactly what I would call a dangerous area... Unless maybe something were to happen around the courthouse.
Cops must just have been bloody bored and hoping to get some money out of the parents, who, most likely, are well-off.

The news media needs to start identifying the names of the police officers who originally file these charges. Maybe the threat of community embarrassment might prevent such actions in the future.
ie: "There's that moronic Officer Jones, what a waste of taxmoney".
