I live in that area and "met" a roller derby girl on OKCupid. She was amazingly sexy, but turned out to be dangerously obsessed with Tarantino films. After revealing my sane opinion -- that the Kill Bill franchise is one of the most overrated pieces of crap ever -- she stopped talking to me.

Lesson learned, don't tell chicks that their favourite movies suck.

That's a pretty cool, original idea which is surprising that it came from anyone involved in roller derby.

There's something about roller derby chicks that I find really off putting. I can't really put my finger on it. Something about how they go around acting like they're a big deal... I don't know. To me, it comes off the same way as christian rockers. "We've shown that christian music can ROCK!" Sure you have.... *roll eyes*

I always thought it was the way a way a lot of them let what should be an offbeat, fun hobby become their identity. You half expect them to start using terms like"mundanes" or "normies" to describe non-roller derby people. It's more annoying than a college kid discovering blue grass.

Should have taken her on an after hours date to a comic shop, a sonny chiba movie, and some pie.

I've got a friend who announces roller derby. It's serious business these days. My city did this same thing a few months back, I guess it's a popular way for teams to raise money since most of them pay their own way to away bouts.

Also, armor makea them look bigger than they actually are.

2012-08-17 08:22:24 AM
Not a fan. I can understand that some people are, but I just can't drum up enthusiasm for it.
Also the girls dress up and its nice, but I've been told I should like it for the costumes at least, because apparently a lot of people know that I have a dark secret fetish for women wearing slutty clothing, but if I really wanted to see girls dressed up all slutty I have the internet.
I do like that the sport, at least in Australia(don't know about the rest of the world), is self funded and a genuine grass roots game. It takes a lot of work to build up something like that and organising it isn't easy and most everyone involved is volunteering so it is a really nice game in that sense.
But the girls involved really do talk themselves up waay too much for my liking.

Dated a girl who got into the roller derby. She had to quit because the league was so cult-like. There was either a practice, team meeting, or team fun outing every night, and she started to feel isolated from her other friends.

Or that they're attention-seeking women that feel they are somehow 'oppressed' and their little roller derby bit fulfills some silly desire to show just how badass they are in a terribly sad display of 'fighting' at the local roller rink. The roller rink that only remains open because of their league and guys who want to play roller hockey after hitting the bars on a Friday night.

I would guess the one from Virginia since they are Dominion Roller Girls.

I have met the girls occasionally...had a couple from my office skate. They all seem fun and good to party, probably more interested in thinking up cool roller names than actually skating. I am an old married guy and that holds little interest for me, but I would suggest younger guy farkers consider training to become a minor league roller derby official (I don't think it is a very difficult program). I don't think officials get compensated in anything but hookups and good stories to tell later in life, however I imagine it would be one of the best paying jobs you'll ever have.

I've known a few around here. They sign up to do this as a mostly unpaid hobby type of thing. The organizers put them on an unreal every weekend, almost every night, training schedule that gives them little to no free time. Like Christian Rockers, people that invest a lot of their time for no gain create their own value through self worth. Keeps the overhead down and the NBA would love to adopt this business model. Hell, if I was a business owner - I could put up with attitude if they worked for free.

I've been the photographer for the Atlanta Roller Girls for 7 seasons. While they may have STARTED as "roller hookers", modern derby - especially teams affiliated with the Women's Flat Track Derby Association - are truly athletes.

They are not all lesbian.

They are not all fat.

I go to Gotham Girls bouts with my girlfriend on a fairly regular basis- she's hooked solid on it. It helps immensely that Gotham is REALLY good and organized incredibly well. They even have a rec league- we'd do it in a flash (I'm curious about officiating for them) except the commute is too much for her.

2012-08-17 09:53:17 AM
It's a great idea, and a great time. But it's not original to Hampton.

New Orleans has been doing this exact event since 2007. My friend Mickey came up with the idea (I was not involved, and don't know if it was inspired by another, even earlier event... or that Monty Python sketch, who knows?).

This year, I believe about 12,000 runners participated, with who knows how many roller girls. Hundreds, certainly.

Spectators lined the route.

Their website is here: http://www.nolabulls.com/index.asp?id=0

I'm sure Hampton's version is wonderful... but if you're thinking about participating, I'm going to go ahead and recommend you come to Nola to experience the original.
