Can a channel that has already suffered network decay possibly decay even further?

AMC is trying to find out.

unlikely: Wasn't AMC the "American Movie Channel"?

AMC was Turner Classic Movies before TCM existed.

But, AMC eventually figured out that running the same 20 movies from the 80s and 90s, chopped up for commercials, would make them more money than running, well, American Movie Classics, and that's what AMC became.

They stumbled on good original programming by accident. And now, with their two major shows coming to an end in the next year or so, it looks like they're going the shiatty reality route like every other former niche network has.

Yeah and the History Channel is the History Channel. Doesn't mean they show anything around history.

At least they're going full freakshow. Other channels have fat ladies, tattooed ladies, two headed ladies, dwarf ladies and human vagina cannons. I'd like a show about carnies and the carny lifestyle. Maybe this will help fulfill my dreams.

In general, you need the cheap, terrible shows that have a higher ratings:cost ratio to subsidize the quality shows that have a lower ratings:cost ratio.

It's the television equivalent of "eating your vegetables," only backwards.

There is hope. I passed over this show until my Dad got me into it.

He read the book it was based on before it saw the show, and was really excited to see it come (I had the reverse effect and read book after Season 1). Absolutely love this show now, they nailed it in terms of just enough historical accuracy to place it firmly in reality.

I fear it might have a Breaking Bad syndrome of slow plot development, but the seeds of a story are there , and they shall grow from the sheer amount of bloodshed and debauchery that takes place around this railroad.

Adding realizing as i misspoke.

My dad gave gave me one of the historical account of the Transcontinental Railroad - the disturbing part being most of the things that go on aren't too far off the truth. They took a bunch of literary influences and accounts of it's construction to capture the life draining effect the rail workers had on the area. What money they made from their work, they'd just turn around and go whore and drink themselves to sleep until work the next morning.

I still hold out hopes that they'll go forward with a series based on the Kim Stanley Robinson Mars series. I was so psyched when I heard that a few years ago, Please, powers that be, return to this idea! I know Mars seems like a loser. Almost every movie based on Mars in the last couple of decades has bombed. John Carter was one of the most epic flops known to man.

But there is renewed interest in Mars. Now would be the perfect time for a series like this, as curiosity beams us ever more awesome images and starts blasting rocks with lasers in the coming years. A serious drama about the colonization and ultimate terraforming of Mars could be epic. All of those other projects that bombed had one thing in common - they sucked. Poor writing and poor acting. Do what you do and bring in super talented people to tell a compelling story. Would be a huge winner.

And imagine if curiosity discovers life on Mars? Microbial or fossil, instant giant ratings boost.

They should do a sitcom like Dinosaurs, but on Mars and instead of dinosaurs they have protozoa.

Meh, Breaking Bad is a decent show but it's well overrated. I get the feeling that the people praising it to high heaven have never watched anything but reality TV before they discovered it.

As far Mad Men, it's just a soap opera with a better wardrobe budget. *yawn*

If AMC went back to showing the kind of movies it did in the early 90's I'd start watching them again. As it is my Charter affiliate doesn't carry TCM so I'm relegated to pirating the old stuff if I want to watch it.

I tried watching this one, but couldn't get into it. It was way to heavy on the pro-confederate, revisionist history masturbatory fantasty stuff for me. Considering all that is the entire basis for the main character's revenge motive, the whole thing just lost me.

It seems like there is definitely quality in the production value, though.

Dude, you are highlighted as a favorite because you're smart. But you are making a mistake here. Breaking Bad is damn near the perfect television show. It is, at it's heart, a character study. It is well acted with long story arcs that make sense. The writing is terrific. There are no gimicks or tricks or "DUH DU DUUUUUUH!" twists. And it is absolutely gorgeous to look at.

This doesn't really surprise me: AMC has shown strong signs of starting to get cheap. That's why the final season of "Breaking Bad" will be split; Vince Gilligan wanted more than 13 episodes to wrap up, and AMC wouldn't raise the budget. Similarly, arguments over money greatly delayed this last season of "Mad Men", and ran Frank Durabond off of "The Walking Dead".

So, yeah, it doesn't surprise me that they might start airing more cheap-ass "reality" shows now.

smimmy: Meh, Breaking Bad is a decent show but it's well overrated. I get the feeling that the people praising it to high heaven have never watched anything but reality TV before they discovered it.

I don't think it's the best show ever (not without Kramer and George) but I think that's being a bit harsh. It has beautiful cinematography, fun capers and hyperviolence and interesting just-this-side-of-reality comic book type characters. It's certainly nothing like Weeds (which I thought got terrible pretty quickly after the first couple seasons) and it's mighty entertaining. It doesn't have to be Greatest Show of All Time for people to enjoy it, doesn't mean they're fresh off reality TV or haven't memorized The Wire or whatever most farkers think the best show ever is.

It's near BSG to me. Fun show that I look forward to each week, but if someone isn't feeling it or has lost interest there's no point in trying to force it on them, either you like it or you don't.

I like it more than Wire which was a bit too procedural/close to reality for my taste, but not quite as much as Deadwood and Rome. Agree on Mad Men though, never really got into it like some folks. I will say that the most recent season 5 I thought was the best they've ever done, but still sort of meh overall. The gf likes it though.

I have to agree with much of what you say however the some of the characters suffer because of the writers lapse of imagination. So much more could have been done to make Skyler, Marie, and Walter JR at least as interesting as Saul, Mike, or Gus. The thing I appreciate about the writing is that so far whenever I find I'm getting board with the program, they blow a mans face away or shoot a kid in cold blood and that always makes me tune in the following week.

I don't buy that it's a split 5th season at all but 2 shortened seasons. They spun it as a split season after the flack they took from the Walking Dead fiasco IMO.

CSI is embarrassingly bad. Mr. Super Eyebrows and Ted the Bartender's doppleganger grandfather sleepwalk through a script to reach some totally didn't see that coming (because I was asleep) twist.

See also "Sons of Anarchy" for another example of shiat TV you should be ashamed of watching.

See, you were doing OK crapping on CSI. But then you went too far and mentioned one of the best shows on the box, and of the last two decades. And that was your downfall.
