(Google)   In 1990, Space shuttle Atlantis carried a human skull for use in radiation experiments. If you know astronauts, you don't need to be told that hilarity ensued. (Scroll to footnote)   (books.google.com) divider line 142

The skull to which they refer belonged to my grandfather. He was a huge JFK supporter and an even bigger space fanatic. His will stated explicitly that his body should be donated to science, in particular, NASA. I know that he felt great pride on his deathbed believing that his earthly remains would be used to further the exploration of the heavens. If he somehow found out what these so called professionals were doing to his body, I really think it would break his heart. He supported the space program with not only his dollars, but his heart and mind. Too bad these guys decided to defile his trust.

Because of my grandfather's experience, I refuse to donate my body to science or my organs to medicine. You give up all of your control when you sign that donor form, which opens the door to all sorts of disrespectful behavior and abuse. We need to de-fund NASA and allow a truly professional, private industry take its place. Mohawks? Abusing dead bodies? Killing middle school teachers? Putting on pampers and driving across country to Tazer your ex-boyfriend? These people are the reason why the United States lags the rest of the world in meaningful space exploration.

I like the next page - how the guys who were test subjects on the Apollo module impact sled all said that they wouldn't dream of filing for disability or complaining about any injuries, because they knew that it was their sacrifice that made it safe enough for the others to survive the actual mission. Signs of different times, or at least a different attitude in the workplace compared to what we usually see in the news.

This kind of comment follows any story of astronaut hijinks. As though we send people to space to act like robots and work 24/7. An astronaut's schedule would be beyond what most people are capable of satisfying. Of course they get personal time during a flight. On Skylab 4 astronauts were so inflexibly scheduled and overworked they held a one-day mutiny where they refused to work or communicate and everyone got a reality check.

He might have chuckled about it. Space buffs are often intelligent and well, nerdy or geeky. They have a sense of humour and weird quirks, so they can be tolerant of other people's quirks and of black humour.

In any case, once you are dead or physically disable (in a coma, for example) you are unable to defend yourself. Not every body is desecrated or the subject of practical jokes, but it can't be helped. NASA or no NASA, medical cadavres are subject to abuse. He did get to go into space in a way, and be part of a classic astronaut prank. That's a pretty good footnote to the life of somebody who cared about the progress of science, technology and humanity.

It's better than crumbling away in a buried box, forgotten by all.

I'm looking forward to when Presidential Canduhdate Mitt "The Shiat" Romney, Romneyhood, Ritz Cracka, Willard the Republitard, El Jefe Acartonado, Milli Vanilli Romni, Papaya Vagina, Romman & Roybin, gets in to office and opens up the coffers and we have a real shot at getting back to the Moon and then putting men and women on Mars then we'll be so much better off.
SCREW starving kids in Africa and Welfare tit-sucking losers that want to eat lobster and steak off my tax dollars, I'd rather that my money is SPENT ON SCIENCE biatchES!!! so that we can progress as a biological entity as is our natural inclination and not have to worry about being treated like the frecking red-headed-stepchildren that we are by the black Man's White House and the TardoCrats Congress. Well, the skull didn't really feel any of those things. It's just some stuff that got left behind. And whoever donated their body to science probably felt the same way or they wouldn't have. Now, their loved ones are another story, and it is very disrespectful of their feelings.

From The Bones and Bombs Guide to Bad Movies:

THE SKULL FROM OUTER SPACE. (SF, B&W, 1 hour, 45 minutes, 1954)

Astronaut Joe "Blow" Adamson litttle suspects that his fellow astronauts are about to play a gruesome prank on him, but they suspect even less that they are about to meet THE SKULL FROM OUTER SPACE! Thrill at the obligatory blast-off count-down! Yawn through the all too familiar meteor shower scene. Laugh uproarously at the stilted and politically incorrect 1950s dialogue and the ridicuous sets and props. Howl with derision at the sad attempt to simulate weightlessnes!

But you will be on the edge of your seat when you meet THE SKULL FROM OUTER SPACE!

Not recommended for people without a sense of humour about talking skulls.

An example of the kind of sense of humour you need to watch this movie: http://www.redmeat.com/redmeat/current/index.html

*Not to be confused with the book review, "The Skull from Outer Space", by John Bossy, published in the London Review of Books, on the book The Ambassadors' Secret: Holbein and the World of the Renaissance by John North, Hambledon, 346 pp, £25.00, January 2002, ISBN 1 85285 330 1.--I remember reading about this book--very interesting it sounds. What? You just know that Brantgoose would Google to see if there was actually a B-movie named The Skull from Outer Space! He would. He's very conscientious, if not slightly high-functioning autistic or OCD. Besides, he would want to see the movie if it existed. Damn this is a long footnote.

Bashar and Asma's Infinite Playlist: Whiskey Dickens: That human skull, lived, loved, felt sadness and had hopes. If I found out that one of my relatives' skulls had been clamped to a toilet or used in a practical joke, I would raise hell. After my death, I'd like someone to make a ventriloquist hand puppet out of my skull and tell bad puns and one-liners from the 1930s.

my friends are under orders that if my body is in good condition I am to be dressed in leather BDSM gear and left in a republican politicians closet.
