According to the Jerusalem Zoo, the sand cat's extinction in Israel followed the territorial exchange between the Jewish state and Jordan in the peace treaty with the Arab country signed in 1994.

Does that make Bill Clinton a kitten killer?

so, about two weeks ago we took two of my sister-in-laws cats for what is supposed to be 4-6 months (may be shorter, may be longer, may be permenent, a bit up in the air)

one male, one female, the female is friendly and generally just wants attention and someone to pet her, unfortunetly if she isn't getting the attenion she think she deserves she is loudly vocal about complaining, the male is very shy, took a few days of me just sitting in the room they are in for an hour or so for him to get to the point that he was willing to come out and sit across the room in the open and look at me, and a few days of me feeding them for him to get to the point where he didn't run and hide as soon as i entered the room

the last few days we have been slowly introducing them to our own two cats (both male), lots of hissing on the part of our two, with the new female being fairly oblivious too it and the new male being very shy/cowering, it helps slightly that in their old home they were at the bottom of the hierarchy of 5 cats so we don't think they will challenge either of our guys,

this has been a rather annoying/stressfull pair of weeks for both cats and people, thanks for letting me vent at people who will understand

We may have to trim that fluffy Biscuit butt. He continues to cough up the largest hairballs I've seen. His hair is real fine and silky...it's long but so silky I can't imagine it ever matting. Brushing him with a slicker yields little hair, yet he somehow is managing to get large amounts of it down his gullet.

Spoke with the vet about it yesterday and he thinks a trimming might be in order. We've been giving him hairball remedy but I'm worried he's going to get another impacted hairball.

Any suggestions are welcome. I have not found a brush that seems to work on this guy.

Using wet wipes will clear out loose hair, but cat food high in omega 3 and 6 fatty acids really help cut down on the shedding because they get a stronger coat. It won't stop shedding, but it will cut down on it a bit. Tuna and Salmon are probably the highest in both acids, but you can find supplements at PetSmart you can pour on other food.

If his fur is so thin a regular cat brush won't pick up the hair, get a cheap people hairbrush with stiff bristles. This is going to sound terrible, but check out the "ethnic" section of the hair aisle at your local pharmacy - many brushes specialized for particular races do a bang up job on a cat.

That's what we use for Suzy. She has a very thick very fine undercoat.

Although the best thing to get the hair is a bath. She isn't fond of baths but the last bath she got saved us about four good size tumblefurs from the livingroom.

Greetings to all.. was waiting for Furrsday.. mixed news.. little " fighter" didn't make it.. seems that both of the kittens had neurological issues.. delayed birth could be the cause.. and the first ( and last ! ) litter.. oxygen deprevation was mentioned.. the birth took too long.. I presume that's why #3 & 4 were perfectly formed but never breathed.. # 1 had become a casualty a while previously... my foster friend said Fighter passed sometime Saturday night.. had been walking in circles.... Mommacat, whom I have tentatively named 'Stretch'.. she does it so well... is now 'fixed', still refuses to even consider cat type food.. even tried the 'almost starvation' routine.. yeah.. I gave in before she did.... still have several plans to try... she is 'clean.. so I am going to try a gradual introduction to the crew.. she knows their smell, but they don't know hers.. and they won't get near the TV room where the temp cage is, if she is in the cage.. normally they are all over that room.... I have status quo cats.. they don't like change, unless it involves more food in their bowls... or an empty box..
Lawn is growing quickly.. fair amount of rain and then lots of Sun... need to come home early tomorrow afternoon.. I mow a serpentine path from the front sidewalk through front and side yards, to the side sidewalk.. complete with loops.. a friend down in the next block has two young 'uns.. 3-4... they go to a day care two doors away.. and they will definitely give diabeetus problems... on the way home, the kids will see the 'trail' and follow it, running around the loops multiple times.. their Dad loves it.. asked me Tuesday if I would do a new one.. hope I am home to see it.... think I started something.....
Sacktime.. best wishes for our Family.. may those who are not well get better quickly.... BBT

OlderGuy: Greetings to all.. was waiting for Furrsday.. mixed news.. little " fighter" didn't make it.. seems that both of the kittens had neurological issues.. delayed birth could be the cause.. and the first ( and last ! ) litter.. oxygen deprevation was mentioned.. the birth took too long..
BBT

I am so sorry about your little fighter. We know it happens, but it is never easy. Hugs

yobbery: We may have to trim that fluffy Biscuit butt.

Can you vacuum him? I know that most horses love to be vacuumed with the brush attachment. I have seen some (rare) kitties that like it too. Maybe you can get those "sticky" gloves and pet him more, I would help with that if I could.
Good luck with the hairy Biscuit problem.

Mrs. BBBB is awake as of Wednesday. She's not very coherent or aware of things just yet, but she is responding to stimuli and can stay awake for five minutes or so at a time. Might be this weekend that she's able to hold a conversation and remember things when she wakes up from her many naps, but we will see. And as it's Caturday, coming home from the hospital last night, there was a black cat on my porch crying away. He didn't run away from me and appears to be a stray, but his coat and overall looks make me wonder if he's lost. Going to take him to the SPCA and see if he's chipped today. I didn't feel anything there, but I might have missed it. If he's not, then I have a choice of what to do. Let him stay in the house last night, and he seemed to get along with Peirogi, but Waffles just glared at him and hissed a few times, then glared at me the rest of the night. The ferrets seemed to scare him, so there weren't any problems there. No damage to the house this morning when I woke up either, so probably like a fool, he'll end up staying with us if he is a stray. So add a cat and a ferret this week to our menagerie. As for names, I'm thinking since he's all black with just a tiny spot of white on his chest that he may be a Coffee, but also thinking either Falafel or Shawarma. I'll try and post a pic later today when I can get a decent computer that isn't being a pain in the butt. Now to see what happens when I get home this afternoon and how decent the house looks, or whether or not he went crazy and tore things up.

I'm going to miss this early dose of Caturday when my sponsorship runs out.

Had a kitty for 25 years
Mild allergy
Now can't spend more than 30 minutes at the local shelter without a bad allergic reaction

No more kitties for me

Which makes me sad

But Caturday makes me happy

But c'mon, you gotta name the new cat Spot. Why be creative when you can be obvious?

Read all rest of pg 1, now blood sugar has riz enough to let me make sense of it. Sand kittens last eve should've rizzed it just by looking at them; didna work. Needed fruit jc.
Didn't notice either that still pic was from Cinti Zoo. They're our fave residents over there (20-30 min drive from The Hoose depending on traffic). Tho extremely cute & moderately furry, they wouldn't make good house cats; instinctively know how to use those claws & fangs! Too bad that didn't save them in Israel back when border disputes were going on. But now that may be fixable, we hope.

No, I have not for cat allergy. From what I understand, those meds are not good for pet allergies, but I could be wrong.

But even if they are, I do not like the idea of living on that kind of med 24x7. The blood pressure meds and occasional asthma meds I take are bad enough. Something that messes with the immune system for something that is optional does not seem like a good trade.

I will have to live with just Caturday and the occasional visit with friends cats until medical science finds a way to permanently reset my immune system. I keep close track on that research.

yobbery, with all those brushy options suggested, you should be able to find somebrush to tame Biscuit's overly ample fur. We use a wire wig brush on the 3 Coonies.
OlderGuy, sorry too that your "little fighter" didn't make it.
Hope TheIceQueen feels better soon as well.
& BBBB, glad to hear some good news from your quarter. Re the black with the small white blaze, you may be like us -- known among the Feline Community to be a Soft Touch when conditions are right. They tried something like that before the surgery but the blockage was just out of reach. I guess Home Depot didn't have anything longer. :o)

I_fling_poo: How 'bout this, Yobbery?

We have one of those. It hardly does anything for Biscuit. However, when we use that brush on Nathan we end up with enough fur to make a sweater.

James72: yobbery: Any suggestions are welcome.
Get a Furminator. (check the pet sections of Home Goods or TJ Maxx, sometimes you can find them there for half the price of the pet stores).

This is on our list of things to try.

Lsherm: If his fur is so thin a regular cat brush won't pick up the hair, get a cheap people hairbrush with stiff bristles. This is going to sound terrible, but check out the "ethnic" section of the hair aisle at your local pharmacy - many brushes specialized for particular races do a bang up job on a cat.

Good idea! Nothing terrible about it...the first step in eliminating bigotry is to recognize, respect and embrace the differences.

According to Biscuit, the only good vacuum is a dead vacuum.
Sticky glove is something I haven't tried on him. We have an old one somewhere...I think they we're still in beta when we bought ours. They're probably much better now. You're welcome to come on up and brush Biscuit anytime.

We need to do something. Although impressive, I don't want to see Biscuit's manly six pack again.
(The vet also mentioned that intestinal blockage by hairball that requires surgery is very rare.)

Another chance for those in FL who wish to/are able to adopt one of the rescued Caboodle Ranch cats:
Copied from ASPCA e-mail:
This Saturday, August 18, the Halifax Humane Society is hosting another event to find homes for some of the remaining Caboodle Ranch cats with special needs, including those who are FIV-positive or have feline leukemia. Please see the details below.
What: Halifax Humane Society Adoption Event
When: Saturday, August 18, 10:00 A.M.-4:00 P.M.
Where: Volusia County Fairgrounds (Hester Building) 3150 E. New York Avenue (State Road 44) DeLand, FL
How to Adopt:Potential adopters should bring with them one government-issued photo ID (i.e., driver's license, passport, military ID or non-driver ID) and proof of address.

Personally don' recall either Halifax or DeLand as one of last time's locations; do recall Jax & Sarasota for sure. But then, as many who grow older, I've contracted CRS (Can't Remember S---).

yobbery I have this comb that I used to use on my Maine Coon wanna be...it was suggested to us by a judge at a household pet show. After we used the comb for about a month, Punkin won 1st in her age grp and then Best of Show... Anyhow, this comb has rotating bristles, and if you put about a 15 degree angle on it, and a tiny bit of pressure, it will comb out the undercoat and make kitteh happy. I use it on Eli the bitey, and cannot believe the amount of fur I get from him! Link follow this link, and you will see what I mean. The one shown is nicer than the one I have, mine has a plastic top on it, and the pins are set into it. Hope this helps. (I gurgled "pet comb with rotation pins, if that helps you any)

Funny cat story..this morning my son tells me, "I had the strangest dream last night, I dreamed that Eli was licking my hand and I could feel it" We know it was a dream, because Eli kept his teeth to himself! lol!

My hubby reports that Eli likes to come into the room at about 5 a.m. and stick his snout into mouth of snoring hubby...I told him, be glad it wasn't a paw! Sympathetic as all heck aren't I?

I am going to see if I can get some barn cat pics today.

[i211.photobucket.com image 640x480]

I've got a boar-bristle hairbrush that I use on the Wimsicle-boy. His fur is short, but he's got an amazingly thick coat.
I dampen the brush down with lavender water before brushing him...brush seems to pick up more loose fur when damp, and Wimsey really enjoys the lavender scent.

Srsly...he stretches out, purrs (and purrs, and purrs), and gets this look of absolute BLISS on his face. He's good for at least 10 minutes of brushing this way, depending on his mood.
It seems to pull a lot of dirt out his coat as well; he gets the 'sparkly', glistening look he has after a bath.

/ However...can brush him for 20 minutes and he STILL sheds if petted immediately afterward.
// He sheds all the rest of the time too...

We made it out of scraps that were in the garage so it didn't cost anything. The kids were climbing it as we were carrying it up the stairs so by the time we got it in the room all 3 of them were on it somewhere. It has been a big hit.

I had a cat one time with a coat like that, I actually used one of those baby combs you get in the grooming kits (the ones with like the clippers, baby brush, baby comb, and a snot sucker or something like that) and it worked really well. You might be able to just buy the comb if you're by a BabiesRUs but I lived in BFE at the time and had to take what I could get.

Probably just the flu or something going around. Mom says the office has been busy with people sick with some type of bug. Didn't have the pukes or anything like that, it was just like the proverbial Mack truck running you over, you just hurt so bad. Then the energy motivation is nada, I think the most I moved was to feed the cats twice yesterday (no peace otherwise). Little better today, went to work. I live in cubicle land plus I took Monday off so I didn't want to be gone 3 days in a row when we're getting the year end fiscal push. Still hurt but now I think I might be down to a quad cab hitting me instead of Semi.

No, I don't have problems with gifs at all, but I have had some issues from time to time with images from imgur. Sometimes I can see them, sometimes I can't. No problems with photobucket & the like though. Like I said, it's likely my old, cranky PC's fault.

Refreshing does nothing & I prefer not to use IE at all.

Dayle and I have been walking and taking the CART bus to get her to Early Head Start school. Long walks for little legs, but she has been doing GREAT! I got her a cheap Spongebob backpack to carry an extra diaper, sippy cup and a few other things herself. That way, hubby can take the car a few days a week and save on gas money. We had to the first two days of her school because he had workshops and had to have the car.

Great news, I found out that I will be getting my Advair breathing medicine free for a year. They will mail it to the house once every 90 days.

ygss, we still have a tree like yours but it's in pieces in the basement after the joints stripped out. It's been down so long the Coonies don't seem to miss it any more. It was only up for maybe 3 yrs -- GangOf5 had their chances at it when they were still little. Something that needs to go when the dead microwave does, with the Sperrmull (we'll have to call for a spl pick-up & pay a little extra). Unfortunately bought ours, didn't have that much extra wood or carpet to build as you say you 2 did.

yobbery: We may have to trim that fluffy Biscuit butt... Any suggestions are welcome. I have not found a brush that seems to work on this guy.

You might recall that I asked this same question a few months ago. I regret that I have still not hit upon a perfect solution, but based on the responses I received, I would definitely think twice before getting a furminator (most of the feedback I got on that was rather negative). I second the suggestion of trying certain "ethnic" brushes/combs. If you have a dollar store nearby, check there first - I have gone through a bunch of different ones for a fraction of the regular cost and do not feel bad tossing them if they prove ineffective (you can always invest in a better quality one if you find one that works).

Also, I forget who emailed me the suggestion of wearing plain rubber (not latex) cleaning gloves (again, available at the dollar store) while petting Dragon - and that actually gets a ton of hair off. It helps if the glove is slightly moist. Good luck, and let me know if you come up an answer!

He's sand colored, so call him Tusken, after the Tusken Raiders (the Sand People) in Star Wars.

So, seeing as how the insanity that is my life knows no bounds, I went into the kids' room this morning to take care of Sage and Rosemary the bearded dragons, and I thought the cage was full of droppings, but no, I could never get that lucky.

sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net

Seventeen wonderful additions to the Blessed family. So of course I had to run out and get an incubator for them. In approximately 3 months, we'll see how many of them survived. I'm not going to hold my breath and say all 17, but I'll be happy if half of them make it. And no, we are not keeping them. I talked to the daughter this morning and she's going nuts about it. She wasn't too thrilled when I told her she was a grandmother at age 13 though.

sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net

This is the new kitty that showed up last night. I didn't get a chance to get out today and see if he was chipped because of the beardie drama, which made me late to the hospital this morning. Wife is still OK, but still not much on the conversation front. We're hoping for more tomorrow, but it's just going to be a slow process. Anyway, after talking with the kids, we're going to have a contest. Here are four names we've come up with: Kippers, Haggis, Hoisin, and Yakisoba. The kids thought it would be funny to let the Caturday people pick the name. They always look in on Saturday, and they want to see what everyone thinks. So by 5 PM tomorrow, I'm going to tally up the votes, and whichever name has the most, that will be the new kitty's name. So come on all you Caturday people, get out the vote, and don't let little black kitty go nameless. Also, thank you all again for the well wishes and prayers for Mrs. BBBB. They are appreciated greatly.

My married-into ethnicity surges to the fore when I say either Kippers or Haggis would be good for the new far-side-of-the-moon arrival. He & Pierogi seem to get along, which could be good, unless the fur flew right after BBBB took that pic. Beardie eggs & an incubator, oh boy. Never does stop, does it. All I can say for that is Goody Luck, & of course best wishes to Mrs BBBB for her recovery, ASAP as possible!

Another commercial threadjack, fairly recent if memory can serve at all: The Breast Cancer site, one of the 7 Greater Good Network sites (rather than Animal Rescue which may also offer it), had this up not all that long ago. Don't recall a price. It as some of the other ones may come in 2 sizes.  As there are 12 pix, may be obvious it's a calendar.

Put in a plug too for imgur because when That Place I Used To Use (don't even remember now what it's called) stopped letting me re-size, I Sought Another. Tried various ones I'd seen folk use for here, which is what finally brought me to imgur. Not least, the fact that it's EZ! I need EZ! Previous Place was fairly so, but not after the resident maniacs started making the technical changes that I declined to cope with.

News from earlier eve e-mail I just now read:
Just minutes ago (this posted just after 5:30PM EDT) the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service formally proposed to protect 838,232 acres as "critical habitat" for endangered jaguars in southern Arizona and New Mexico -- an area larger than the state of Rhode Island.
When finalized in the next year, and joined with a developing federal recovery plan, the decision will ensure jaguars return to the wild mountains and deserts of the American Southwest.

That sounds like quite good news for the jaguars!

I'm not going to hold my breath and say all 17, but I'll be happy if half of them make it. And no, we are not keeping them. I talked to the daughter this morning and she's going nuts about it. She wasn't too thrilled when I told her she was a grandmother at age 13 though.

Are you giving Rosemary (or is it Sage) some Calcium suppliments? Egg laying can deplete calcium levels in mommas.

Rosemary gets calcium dust with her crickets, roaches, and greens. She looks emaciated, ...

Good. If momma is healthy, the babies are more likely to be healthy, if any hatch. I heard that reptiles can develop bone problems if their bodies have to choose between good bones and good egg shells. I'm glad she won't have that issue.

Back in the '90,s, I found an abandoned kitten.. got her checked out by my vet.. dirty but healthy.. would purr so loud she buzzed, and would bomb around the house at about mach 2.. hence the name 'buzzbomb'.. fit her perfectly....

Ewwww, I'm so sorry to hear that. I like imgur because it's so simple and fast to post images on FARK.
I would suggest you might try Kaspersky Internet security as they offer free 30 day trial versions. Some of the less popular anti-virus software has filtering that can be real finicky and that might be happening to you.

Good luck

PS Kaspersky can be had for cheap if you shop around. $20 etc or there abouts.

Thanks, but I think I'll stick with Avast. It's never let me down, so I'm reluctant to switch to another av.

Fwiw, I know I probably can't convince you, but KIS has always rated as one of the best in reviews etc.

Thank you.

akimbotoo: Timid Goddess: Dayle and I have been walking and taking the CART bus to get her to Early Head Start school.

That's because that wasn't really a cat, it was some kind of shape shifting alien. Sometimes it was a cat, other times it was a woman. When it was a cat it was carried around by the leader of the group that the Enterprise ran into that week, it was implied that she was the leader's lover when she was in the shape of the woman. I can't remember much more about that episode, that was a long time ago, and I haven't caught any episodes of ST-TOS in a long time.

I've got some questions about chipping cats. We've got 3 young indoor cats who are all curious about going out. None of them would have a clue about where we live if they did get out, so we need some way to get them back if they do sneak past us. Right now they've got collars with their names and our phone # embroidered on them, but we're considering chipping them (and the one indoor/outdoor cat too, but he can find his way home now).

So the questions are:
1) How invasive is this? I've heard it's just an injection, is that right?
2) How much does it bother a cat? Will they scratch at the spot?
3) How much does this usually run?

Thanks in advance for the help I know I'll get here!

Venus is who that lovely cat with the clearly defined face sides & off eyes is, that in2it picked up her pix from LoveMeow #139 that just arove today. Where's The Great Porn Dragon with his endless supply of genetic info when it'd be useful? Mayhap he'll turn up later, for yellowcat's benefit. Too, cretinbob, she appears to have a happy home from what was in LM#139. There's likely to be much drooling & slavering at her loveliness & not-usual appearance, not just here. I forget what LM's distrib is, but it's big.
I'll also say for daRog's benefit (mention a name for pic credit & outta the woodwork they come, or summat) that "yocks" is almost as old as 1) dirt or 2) the hills. Shortspeak for "years & years" in some circles. I've used the word for decades.

All mine are chipped. I never felt a thing. ;-p

It's not invasive at all. The chip is about the size of a small grain of rice. It's injected using a large bore needle and is just like any other vaccine. You can tell that the cat notices some discomfort during insertion, but none of mine have never done more than momentarily flinch. That's was it...no scratching or anything afterward. Like nothing ever happened.

I don't remember the cost, but I don't believe it was expensive. It's well worth every penny.

1 - yes it is an injection but its a big needle, The chip iteself is about the size of a grain of rice. They're usually chipped when they're under for something but I've had some of mine chipped when they went in for their yearly physical and vaccines.

2 - I've never seen mine bother it. It just floats inbetween the skin and muscle between the shoulder blades (or that vicinity).

3 - Cost depends on where you get it done at. I've seen vets charge $50-$60 for it. If you have a local human society or rescue, they often do it cheaper. Our local society has a vet clinic once/week and they charged I think $15 or $20 and it included the first year fee for Home Again (that's the brand they use, but there's also Petwatch which my rescue agency uses). If you go with something like Home Again, there is a yearly fee of $15 where you get more assistance if kitty becomes lost (they send out emails to other owners in their system in your area, send posters to local vets, etc). You don't have to pay this fee as your information will always be in the system. However, they don't help you search for kitty, they just keep the database so if kitty is found and scanned, your info can be located.

The Ice Queen: Lsherm: yobbery: We may have to trim that fluffy Biscuit butt.

[i211.photobucket.com image 640x480]

A snot sucker....of course! What else could it possibly be?
/Those kits also come with sideburn trimmers, don't they?

Still working on a name for this guy, nothing has really "stuck" yet.
So far I have had the following suggestions:
- Yeti
- Biscuit
- Sandman
- Monroe
- Edsel (because he has a VERY loud purr for his size)

?????? on others

Evinrude

I also like his marking and the first thing that entered my mind was "Caramel".

I love Evinrude!!!

Mercury? Johnson? Honda? Yamaha?

True those are all outboard motor names, but Evinrude is much more distinctive IMHO.

How about Harley, not an outboard motor, but they sure can purr loud, and who doesn't love a Harley!

This handsome boy (half Collie/half German Shepherd) was christened Harley Tucker.

Named in June '93 after the female lead in the movie Pure Country by an old g/f. She moved out in the fall of '97 but Harley stayed with me til he went to the Bridge in July '06.

Still luv ya, Harles!

Nothing wrong with blue & green eyes! I have a human friend with one of each, would love a kitty with both!

I think I understood why/how Dragon's eyes are that color, not sure how it occurs in a calico. I had a genetics course in college back in the day, but I don't really remember that much of it -- just remember counting fruit fly eye color in the lab!

We had to the first two days of her school because he had workshops and had to have the car.

Actually, we're both wrong - he's sitting behind the CPAP :)

My cat likes sitting on the hose because I got a heated one and when the humidifier is running it's hot. Thank god for a closed system because otherwise I'd be breathing in cat butt for at least half the night. He's also prone to warming his balls on the hose during the winter, but he'll deny it. However, sometimes when I wake up he's wrapped his legs around the hose like it's a surrogate mother. Cats like heat.

Sir/Madam - that's a picture of a cat sleeping right next to your air intake. He's got the bulk of his weight next to the heated humidifier (smart cat) but his paws are right in front of where the air pump draws the air. If you have breathing problems you should move your CPAP against a wall so he can't do that. Just a suggestion. The air filter for a CPAP isn't exactly HEPA rated. It's just a nylon mesh mean to catch big particles from shooting up your nose.

Brian Blessed's Bastard Boy: So, seeing as how the insanity that is my life knows no bounds, I went into the kids' room this morning to take care of Sage and Rosemary the bearded dragons, and I thought the cage was full of droppings, but no, I could never get that lucky.

[sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net image 850x637]

Seventeen wonderful additions to the Blessed family. So of course I had to run out and get an incubator for them. In approximately 3 months, we'll see how many of them survived. I'm not going to hold my breath and say all 17, but I'll be happy if half of them make it. And no, we are not keeping them. I talked to the daughter this morning and she's going nuts about it. She wasn't too thrilled when I told her she was a grandmother at age 13 though.

[sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net image 540x720]

I would have to vote for Kippers as a name. I just watched a "How is it made?" show last night on Haggis. Damn. I couldn't look away. When I finally did I saw that hubby had the same horrified look on his face as I did.

We used Avast for several years, but then we started getting little viruses that got through. I ended up with Kaspersky and hubby went with Bit Defender. I got a great price for Kaspersky on e-bay. It was only about $30 or so for 3 computers.

We have the kitties here! :-) YAY!!!!

I really wanted to post some funny pictures but I am so tired. I woke up at 3 AM thinking it was time to go to SeaTac and pick up the kitties... then I couldn't fall back to sleep.

Lots of nasty Seattle traffic and we finally made it to the airport. It was 98 degrees when we made it back home. Then my daughter and I spent more time setting up their room for them. Constantly checking on them to make sure they were happy. All the while keeping our Min Pin "Pooka" from getting too curious.

We let the cats and dog do their sniffing routine. Pooka learned his place and the cats learned theirs. The cats have decided that ALL areas belong to them.

I gave the cats a tuna snack served on a special plate. NO! I didn't add a sprig of parsley, so don't get on my ass for going overboard :-p However, the plates were quite pricey Asian plates that had a specific purpose for the serving of only the best sushi. The cats were pleased and rubbed on my leg to show their acceptance of the edibles that I presented them with.

Right now they are lounging on one of the many large, fluffy pillows I have provided for their pleasure.

One of the cats allowed me to give him scritches under his chin. I felt this was an important moment in our relationship. However, he did not reciprocate the scritches, and my chin is still itchy.

Dixie, the smaller of the two cats graced us with her presence as she came downstairs and rubbed on EVERYTHING. I feel special now that I have provided her with furniture that pleased her.

The larger cat, Buddy, has remained in the bathroom for most of the day, laying next to the toilet. I placed pillows on each side of the toilet to give him a comfy bed. He seems pleased with this. I thank the good lord above that I took the time to clean the toilet before his arrival as to avoid any unpleasant smells.

I plan to place a suggestion box in their room in case they have any requests for a more pleasant stay.

2012-08-18 01:38:14 AM

Snuffybud: I've got some questions about chipping cats.

It really isn't very invasive. The chip is about the size of a grain of rice. Charlie and Zuma were chipped just before I took them home from the Humane Society. They were about 4 months old at the time and didn't really even flinch. I had Abby chipped while she was under anesthetic for her to be spayed. I can feel Charlies over his right shoulder blade, but I haven't felt Zuma's. Abby's can be felt if you really poke around to find it. I think hers was about $25 or so.

Debby7813: Harley is a great kitty name. We had a Harley, so named by the shelter folks from where we adopted him, because of his loud purr.

Harley...1997-2004....

[i235.photobucket.com image 639x430]

///still miss my sweet boy....

I had a pet named Harley once. He was a 4' long California King Snake my brother gave to me. Harley got a ride in the saddle bag of brothers motorcycle. Hence the name. I renamed the snake Harry Houdini because he was an escape artist. Plus I liked the weirdness of a snake named Harry. ;D

No insurance. Hubby has health care through the tribe, daughter has state care since we are low enough income although she has the option of health care through the tribe as well. Hubby is a teacher. He can get insurance through work, but to get me insured would be $600 a month.

If you have breathing problems you should move your CPAP against a wall so he can't do that. Just a suggestion. The air filter for a CPAP isn't exactly HEPA rated. It's just a nylon mesh mean to catch big particles from shooting up your nose.

It has been moved to a narrow table next to my bed. Not enough room for a small short-haired tortishell to sleep, let along the big fluffy monster from the photo.

Great news! I use the European version (called Seretide, pronounced sarateeda) and just had my yearly check up. It's definitely made a positive difference controlling my asthma!

Don't know the model, but yes, he is sitting ON my CPAP.

I believe cat body temp is 101 degrees....

sherpa18: yobbery: We may have to trim that fluffy Biscuit butt...

[i415.photobucket.com image 482x226]

You can also do a moist hand if the cat doesn't care for the glove. My overloards wait for me to finish dishes and pat my hands mostly dry, then demand attention. It's probably not quite as good as the glove but since one of my cats is a Ninja Biter and Clawer, I'll take whatever I can to keep the bloodshed down.

tomWright: tigerose: tomWright: I'm going to miss this early dose of Caturday when my sponsorship runs out.

Had a kitty for 25 years
Mild allergy
Now can't spend more than 30 minutes at the local shelter without a bad allergic reaction

No more kitties for me

Which makes me sad

But Caturday makes me happy

Have you tried taking Claritin or zyrtec? I suspect that your reaction was frm having so many furballs in one place.

I am allergic to cats and live with six with no medication to help. If you get them very young, the level of dander is more copeable with and gives your immune system a chance to get used to that particular cat. Also, frequent brushing/bathing and petwipes can help. Or get a devon rex, cornish rex or sphinx cat, those all are hypoallergenic breeds

Regret forgetting about Black Cat Apprec Day yesterday. Gretl, of whom we don't seem to have any findable pix (likely all slides), was a huge seal tortie, reddish patches randomly distributed & cream tip to her tail. She was 1st cat we adopted in W Berlin a lifetime ago, from US service family who were leaving & didn't think she'd get along with the cats they'd left with family. Don't recall how they acquired her, maybe a rescue of sorts.
Then there's Fred the tuxie, who came to back door of House In City on coldest day of ~late 1979 & asked to be taken in. She succumbed to kidney failure early Nov 2007, also maybe stress of arrival of Contest Cats (Furry & 3 kitns, mid-Apr 2007). Contest Cats, bcs Plumbicon & I were both Away for annual barbershop contests that wkend. Had spliced this into a montage which may be why it's now de-focussed.

We used Avast for several years, but then we started getting little viruses that got through. I ended up with Kaspersky and hubby went with Bit Defender. I got a great price for Kaspersky on e-bay. It was only about $30 or so for 3 computers.

Have Zone Alarm on one system, Trend Micro on the others.. nothing gets through, and doesn't over- filter.. if I go to a bad website, it will alert me and strongly suggest that I don't go there.. a really bad website will be blocked.. also do a monthly check with Malwarebytes, a freebie.. if you have a possible bug, you can download Stinger, a McAffee product and another freebie.. download the latest version and run it.. it doesn't install, just runs.. has all of the latest definitions... Microsoft Security Essentials is also free, and does a good job, but doesn't like other A/V products....

I have heard of cats that do not produce the Fel-d-1 protein that cause the allergy, or produce much less of it. But no studies from peer reviewed sources or repeated results. Perhaps my old cat was one of those. I have asked around at a couple shelters if anyone does testing for that protein, so maybe I could find such a cat at a shelter, but no one seems to know.

Unfortunately, my reaction now is strong enough I can't take the chance on getting a cat. I could stop breathing, which is a bad thing.

Returning a cat would be too heartbreaking. (Don't tell anyone I said that)

And, yes, the owner has been charged with animal cruelty and I'm pretty sure he'll never get his dog back, but I can guarantee there will be a lot of people standing in line to give her a great home, and I'm sure they will be bright enough to leave her safe and warm at home when they head out to climb a 14er.

Or get that dog a set of boots to prevent a repeat of the cuts on the paw pads.

As for the original owner, I would have had a bit more sympathy if he had gotten help to go back up for the dog immediately. As it is, makes me a more than a bit angry at him.

2012-08-18 11:01:57 AM

Snuffybud: I've got some questions about chipping cats.

Both of mine had it done, and I was really worried about getting it done. The city of Albuquerque requires that all pets are microchipped, so I had to get it done or they assess fines and threaten to come take your animals.

They both got it done while they were under for tooth cleaning, so it didn't bother them at all. I was never told where it was done (but assumed it was the shoulders), but neither of them showed any pain or worried at the spot where the injection was done. Some sites said the chip can shift over time and you can feel it when you pet them, but I've never felt it and they don't seem to notice anything either.

As for the price, I can't seem to find a bill with it, but I imagine I paid between $60 and 80 for it. They're with Home Again, and the yearly fee is 17.99 for the extra services. I paid for it for one of my cats because we were moving and there was a higher likelihood one might escape, and they offer extra services for searching for your pet. Also a medical hotline, which is apparently a $60 call you get for free. I have to decide if I'm going to pay for it for my little girl now that the first free year is up.

It's just one of those things you want to always make sure if up to date, especially if you move. It's one of the first things I did. With Home Again, you can manage it all online, upload a photo of your animal and a short description of their looks.

That thought came to mind when (for 20 zillionth time) I was trying to step around/over/past Wimsey.
He has this habit of laying down in the traffic pattern...positioned exactly so that there is just enough room to step around/over/past him...but only if you're very, very careful.
Otherwise there is a squall, a white blur, and then an offended white cat GLARING at one while he waits for his apology.

Reaching down and gently nudging him to get him to move sometimes works...as does just saying 'the hell with it' and picking him up and placing him in a safer place.
Both solutions get a protest and a glare as well.

I've told him that neither of us would enjoy the outcome if he got stepped on, but does he listen?
Well, probably...but does he change his behavior?

HA!

What worries me is that I will lose my balance and actually step on him...and he is so trusting that he won't think to get outta the way in time.

His favorite activities were knocking things off the headboard, biting our noises, hiding under blankets, laying on my chest and purring to make me fall asleep, and standing in front of computer screens that you were using.

Mal passed away peacefully in my wifes arms Tuesday night. He liked Caturday picts, so I thought it was appropriate he should be mentioned this week.

So Theo likes baths! Or at least his version of them.... When he and his sibs were little and I'd just started fostering them, they got baths in the sink almost daily - they all ended up muddy after using the litter box... Anyway, one of his favorite places to play is the bathroom and he is forever getting into the bathroom sink and calling for me to turn the water on. Well, cats don't like water, or at least I've been told this is the case, so I've always been careful to keep it at a trickle so he can play in it without getting soaked. I guess this morning I was feeling a little less than angelic, so I decided to get the little bastage wet. Really, really wet. I turned the water on full, and he stayed in the sink. Then I started petting him, making sure to really soak his coat, and he loved it! I went and got a towel while he played and my little kitty who prefers not to be picked up (and I don't usually unless it's to move him to another location - he does the whole, 'Theo get up there!' thing pretty good, so there's not a lot of need) but doesn't really like being held, let me bundle him into the towel and cuddled in, closed his eyes and just went all relaxed and happy. After I finished drying him, he got back up into the sink and demanded a repeat of the whole event. I'd forgotten how soft kitty fur is after a good wash!

[theprincipalisanalien.com image 850x303]

Mal was found in a snow drift 10 years ago (knocked there by a snow plow). He was eventually adopted by my wife to keep her company during residency. He had a fondness for chewing and licking plastic bags.

Theo loves to watch TV - this was taken one evening when he was engrossed in Wheel of Fortune, completely ignoring Zara and Fozzie beating the crap outta each other on the floor. Snuffybud: I've got some questions about chipping cats.

The advantages of microchipping:

1. If your dog/cat loses his collar, they can still be identified. I always want my animals to be able to get their collar off if it were stuck on something (my pets don't wear collars in the house for this reason), but the microchip will still be there.
2. It can be the only way to prove an animal is yours. If someone were to steal my dog, take some pictures of the dog with their kids, well I would have a difficult time proving he was actually my dog even if I did have registration, vet records, etc.

Some notes:
-I have never heard of it happening, but theoretically the body could push the microchip out. So it might be a good idea to make sure it is still there when you head to the vet.
-There are different brands of microchips and different scanners to pick them up. Some more popular than others. Shelters should be checking for all types of chips, but you never know...

yellowcat: sherpa18: yellowcat: in2it: Can we get a genetic explanation for this little beauty? a green eye and a blue eye?

dragon wants to know what's wrong with having one blue eye and one green eye..... :o)

[i415.photobucket.com image 640x480]

/ check last week's thread and you will find the genetic explanation

Nothing wrong with blue & green eyes! I have a human friend with one of each, would love a kitty with both!

I think I understood why/how Dragon's eyes are that color, not sure how it occurs in a calico. I had a genetics course in college back in the day, but I don't really remember that much of it -- just remember counting fruit fly eye color in the lab!

It is related to the sex chromosome. Males have an XY chromosome. Females have an XX. Since females have two Xs, X1 will be used for some things and X2 will be used for others, and it kind of happens in zones. So if your female cat has the right masking genes (which might cause him to be another color or have a tuxedo pattern or something else) and then has two different X colors they will be calico.

Most calico cats are female *but* there can be male calicos because sometimes we get three chromosomes or not enough or something crazy. You might end up with X, XXX, XYY, or XXY (or some others that aren't viable). If your male cat has XXY he could be calico. My genetics is a little rusty, but that is what I remember.

As for the names that we came up with, Yakisoba is my daughter's favorite lunchtime meal, Kippers is one of my favorite meals I had over in England, Hoisin is my son's favorite marinade that I make steaks with, and also when we have fondue for Thanksgiving. (We're a strange family. We have never had a turkey dinner for Thanksgiving. We've had a three course fondue meal for the last five years, and hoisin is great with chicken and steak.) Haggis was my contribution as well, and yes, I have had it before in Edinburgh a couple of times. Always tried to eat one ethnic meal in every country I've gone to during my overseas years, and I can't say I enjoyed it immensely, but I can say that I did eat it. So for now, it's Hoisin 5, Kippers 4, and Haggis 1. Keep the votes coming and we'll see what new cat's name will be this evening.

Threadjack Alert:

Got a (OK, several) question(s) for CPAP users. It looks like I'm going to be joining your ranks.
Did any of you have trouble with 'discomfort' in the nasal passages while wearing it?

Asking because when they tried one of those nose-masks (claustrophobic here) on me I could only handle it for about a half hour before I was all "Please take this thing offa me- it HURTS!"
Felt like one of the worst sinus infections I've ever had, all achey and stinging.

S'poseta go in for a mask fitting next week, see if they've got one I can wear without discomfort. Anybody else need to try a bunch of different masks until you found one you could live/sleep with?
Did the mask really make a difference in comfort?

Also CPAP machine and cats...do they get along OK?
One Four of the things (besides the apnea) preventing me from sleeping well are my owners.

Final question: DO THEY ACTUALLY HELP? I mean, do they do all (or any) of the things that's claimed for them (e.g., improve blood pressure, weight loss, no more tired alla time and needing to nap like a cat, general outlook improving, etc.)?

Thanks, people...you are appreciated very much!

Here's the 3 candidates for chipping-

His brother Cisco

All three. That's Desi the Flying Cat investigating the pile of junk headed out, Cisco helping, and Jack waiting by the door. As you can see Desi managed to lose his collar already (the second day actually!) so that's another reason why we're considering chipping them.

To be clear, two different color eyes doesn't work the same way, so if you know a guy with different color eyes that doesn't mean he is XXY. There are a ton of ways it can happen. And it also is not how different skin colors or Vitiligo work in humans. Just don't want anybody assuming people they know with different colored eyes or parts of skin are XXY males or something...

tomWright, I don't know if you're still hanging around the thread, but have you looked into allergy desensitization injections? It's basically where they inject you on a weekly/semi-weekly basis with very small doses of the stuff you're allergic to, in the hope that your immune system will eventually get used to it. From what I understand it doesn't necessarily always work for everyone, but when it does work, it *really* seems to work. Best part is it's not a drug, so the side effects are limited to things like itching at injection sites right after the shot or stuff like that - i.e. allergy symptoms you're probably already having anyway.

I started getting them something like 8-9 years ago (forget exactly when), and over the next couple years I went from using up a box of tissues every couple days throughout most of the non-frozen months of the year to being essentially allergy-free unless I actually went and stuck my face in a bunch of plants or something. And I was quite allergic, too - when you first start the routine they do a test to see what you're allergic to, which involves putting little dots of liquid with allergens in them on your back and pricking the skin to see which ones you react to. I reacted to *all* of them, even the distilled water control.

I don't know how it would work if the allergy is severe enough to be potentially life-threatening - mine were more the kind that just makes you miserable and occasionally causes you to break out in hives, not the kind that closes airways - but I would hope it'd at least be an option. I'd hate to see someone permanently deprived of feline companionship. And I'd second the suggestion that it ought to be possible to get your immune system used to a specific cat. Cats are actually among the things I'm allergic to, which surprised the heck out of me because we'd *always* had cats and I'd never had any symptoms. It turns out that my body was desensitized to our cats - nowadays with living elsewhere, when I come back home I get sniffly for a day or so, but it clears up quickly as my body gets used to being around cats again.

1) Nasal masks don't work for me because I tend to sleep with my mouth open - defeats the purpose just a bit, lol. You may be surprised with the full face mask, so give it a try at the fitting. My mom is hugely claustrophobic and was able to work into the full face mask; she said the positive air pressure helped mitigate the claustrophobia for her.

2) I've been using one for 2 years and still looking for the perfect mask. I had one that worked awesome but the company 'redesigned' it :( One thing to remember, if you have a mask with an inner, harder gel and an outer siliconeish pillow tighter may not actually be a better fit. Oddly, that was something my fitter didn't know. Luckily, my insurance has a deal with the CPAP company so I can actually try masks until I get the right fit; they deem it better to do that than pay for the medical bills later in life.

3) Do they work? Oh gods and sweet kitties YES. The difference a well fitted mask and the CPAP made for me was astounding. Without it, I am scatter-brained, accident prone, and too tired to really want to do anything. With it, even with a slightly leaky mask, I am more awake, less likely to hurt myself on various household furniture, and no longer have to take a 2-3 hour nap in the early afternoon. I also noticed some weight loss without changing my routine at all, though that seems to have plateaued before my goal so I'm modifying some of that routine.

Good luck with the CPAP!

dopekitty74: I am allergic to cats and live with six with no medication to help. If you get them very young, the level of dander is more copeable with and gives your immune system a chance to get used to that particular cat. Also, frequent brushing/bathing and petwipes can help. Or get a devon rex, cornish rex or sphinx cat, those all are hypoallergenic breeds

My mom is slightly allergic to cats, but somehow becomes completely desensitized to it after a while. They get a new cat, she is sneezing and itchy for a month or so and then it goes away. As always, I'm sure lots of cleaning the cat and vacuuming help. Also you could keep the kitty out of your bedroom, always wash your hands/face before going to bed, wash your pillowcase a lot, use a neti pot.

Also, since Clariton, Zyrtec, Allegra, and Benadryl are all anti-histamines they should work for all types of allergies. I have to use antihistamines in the spring/summer every single day and I often take Allegra in the morning and Benadryl at night. The only side effects I experience are slight drymouth and the Benadryl makes me drowsy.

Not saying you should get a cat if you are severely allergic, but if you really want a cat you could at least try it... maybe you could foster a cat to test it out...

That was what I was thinking. If you foster a kitten, you can get him or her used to bathing, helping to reduce the dander, and if it really just doesn't work with your allergies, you can regretfully tell them you are unable to continue helping for medical reasons.

My hubby is allergic to cats, had four when we got married. Said he toughed it out with allergy meds for a few weeks, maybe 6, then no problems.

I can't help you with your CPAP questions except to tell you that if you have sleep apnea that is preventing your from sleeping you should definitely try something! Also, my boyfriend has this loud nebulizer machine to treat his asthma when he is sick and our cat doesn't even notice the loud (it annoys me :P) noise. That said, our cat is a Bengal who is extremely laid back. I drop dishes on the floor and break them and my dog and cat just lay there staring at me like I'm an idiot.

yobbery: We may have to trim that fluffy Biscuit butt.

I have a "zoom groom" that works great on both my cats. It does an excellent job getting their undercoats. I also follow the zoom with an old brush of my Dad's (boar bristle with no handle) to grab any fluffies teh zoom has missed. It's easier with 2 people (one to man each brush), but possible with one person and a brush in each hand. Peep (Maine coon) has ceased barfing hairballs with a daily brushing. George still gets hairballs, but that's cause you have to chase and brush at the same time or get bitten.

Older Guy I am so sorry to hear of you loss. At least the kittens knew the touch of a kind hand during their short lives. You did a fine job with them. You ust take some pics of your grassy maze! Hugs.

I did the maze this morning before I left for work.. rumor has it that the daycare folks brought all the kids out to try it out.. received a text from a neighbor.. I will have to go take a photo.. I will cut the grass fully Sunday.. the 'maze' cut won't show when I am finished, as the grass will have had two days to grow more.... all the weed-whacking will happen tomorrow...
Definitely sad about the kittens.. was the first litter for Stretch, and actually the first for me also.. got rather grossed out, but had to try to help.....all the kittens I have had were already weaned....

I am so sorry about your kitten losses, you did all you could.

As for the "lawn maze" you sir, are all kinds of awesome!

Timid Goddess: Lsherm: Timid Goddess: Salem Witch: Timid Goddess: Dayle and I have been walking and taking the CART bus to get her to Early Head Start school.

HOORAY!

Thank you.

Are you hurting on the insurance front? I don't know the back story. Congrats on getting the meds regardless :)

No insurance. Hubby has health care through the tribe, daughter has state care since we are low enough income although she has the option of health care through the tribe as well. Hubby is a teacher. He can get insurance through work, but to get me insured would be $600 a month.

Glad about your Meds! I know how I felt when I started to get my psoriasis for free. I sat and cried for almost 2 days. It was going to cost me $750.00 a month. And the samples the Dr. gave me were working miracles. No way I can offord $750.00 a month. My husband has insurance through his Teachers Retirement Pension, but like you said, it would also cost me $600.00 a month to be insured. Anyway I have rambled on. lol Just glad to hear you are getting the meds you need.

Better post a cat pic to make up for the wall of text..

Snuffybud: I've got some questions about chipping cats.

1. It's just an injection, like when they get shots.
2. It didn't bother either of mine at all. No scratching, rubbing, etc.
3. It depends. Shop around. I got both of mine done in FL at the Pinellas County Animal Rescue for $15 each (we were visiting family when George went walkabout - chipped both cats before we came home.) If I had gotten it done here in CT at my Vet's office it would have been $50 per cat.

I highly recommend it. The panic when George went missing was horrible. Knowing that if he should escape again he has all his info on him is really reassuring.

GGracie: We have the kitties here!

This post is full of awesome. Congrats on your new Overlords!

[theprincipalisanalien.com image 850x303]

Mal was found in a snow drift 10 years ago (knocked there by a snow plow). He was eventually adopted by my wife to keep her company during residency. He had a fondness for chewing and licking plastic bags.

We are filled with so much joy as Buddy - the orange cat - has finally exited the bathroom. He graced us with his exalted presence as he entered the living room. He looked around as if he was surveying the lands to see if everything met with his approval. Buddy then approached my daughter, who was sitting on the couch. My daughter has a gentle and loving soul; Buddy could obviously sense this. Then the glorious moment occurred... Buddy leapt onto the couch, moved towards my daughter and made the motions that it was time for her to give him scritches. It was truly magnificent! I felt as if I should have curtsied towards his greatness. Monet could not have painted a picture as beautiful as that single moment.

Now if I can just get the cats sh*t in their litter box, everything will be cool :-) :-p

syzygy whizz: Threadjack Alert:

/threadjack

Been dealing with it 15 years or so. I have chronic sinus issues, so the nose thing is out for me. I wear a full-face mask and have no problems. I'd probably be dead if I wasn't diagnosed and treated. The lack of REM sleep was making me tired, run down and mental. It was like flipping a switch -- the first day I popped out of bed and went all day without several naps.

There are other benefits as well -- all but severely SBD farts are dealt with before they get to you and you have less allergies from inhaling crap floating around the house.

I have used a CPAP for 9 or 10 years and it took a lot of trial and error with different types of masks to find one that works for me. I had tried a CPAP several years before, but they didn't have humidifiers then and everything in my sinuses got too dried out and I was miserable. I also didn't like most of the smaller masks that covered the nose because of the straps putting pressure on the tmj (temperomandibular joints) I ended up with the Comfort-Lite 2 with the direct seal.

It is important to try several different types of masks and to find what works best for you. I purchased my machine on line (with perscription) because it was half the price of the identical one at the local sleep lab.

Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions!

yobbery: We may have to trim that fluffy Biscuit butt.

[i211.photobucket.com image 640x480]

One suggestion I'd make--instead of using a regular slicker brush, use a shedding blade (basically they look like what would happen if you bent a hacksaw blade into a ring and attached a handle to it).

Slicker brushes do exactly jack for Kali (who is rather prone to hairballs, being a Maine Coon and all) but the shedding blade gets the baby-fine kitty wool under the top coat that she has been getting hairballs from.

Alright, time for a funny cat story:

Once upon a time, when we lived in a flat in Detroit proper, we had a cat named Pasha. She was 10 or 12 pounds of completely unleashed fury, not unlike how a Lowland Gorilla would get if you stood between it and its food supply. The only person she seemed to like was my Dad, and listened to him unquestioningly. Pasha was also a very brilliant Siamese, and considered everyone other than Dad as beneath her. If she perceived that Dad didn't like someone, they were immediately ambushed like a drive-by shooting, usually from above. Now, the neighbors at that time had a German Shepherd that terrorized everyone from its yard next door. It was a very stupid dog.
One day, my mother's parents came by to irritate us (we are talking about people that had a sweater skunk-sprayed and gave it to Dad as an Xmas gift; they were extreme racists, and hated Dad and I for being Italian, of all things) and, as usual, stayed three hours on a supposed 15 minute visit (to our dismay). This was also the day that the neighbor with the dog came by, and had the dog in tow. So, Pasha saunters into the living room, and sees my grandparents. Nothing happens; she just wandered off, not even noticing the dog. After a few more minutes of visiting, straight out of nowhere, she hops onto Grandpa's head and 'fury swats' him without claws, then goes for Grandma's ankles. Dad didn't let her get that far, and yells at Pasha to behave. By now, my mom was freaking out and hiding in the kitchen.
Pasha, however, was having a difference of opinion on the matter with Dad on mauling my nasty grandparents , and was sitting in front of me. She looked at Dad, then at the Grandparents, then Dad, tail swishing in her version of a pout. Ma assumed what was coming, and tried to put the cat in the bedroom, but Pasha was really good at opening doorknobs (I saw her do it more than once) and came out on her own. She was now very angry.

Then, she saw the Dog. It had been in the kitchen with Mom, but came into the room upon hearing the cat. This was a very big dog. Pasha didn't care. She flew at the poor thing, and proceeded to beat the crap out of it. You just didn't mess with Pasha, and we weren't about to stop her while she went deadly assassin on a creature ten times her size. The dog yelps, rockets out the door to the balcony, and refuses to come back in. Pasha then goes back over to Dad, hisses in the Grandparents' direction, and hops into his lap like royalty. I'd never seen ma and dad laugh so hard in their life; apparently, since Dad had told her 'no' on hunting the older folk, she figured the dog was just as good as any to vent on. The dog wasn't badly hurt, but when that neighbor came by with the dog after that, as soon as it saw little tiny Pasha, it bolted. The cat's revenge wasn't over; Ma had shut her in a room, and Pasha refused to let that go, so when one very tiny cat poo ended up dead center on ma's pillow that night (she knew whose pillow was whose), we recognized the warning. She *never* went to the litter box anywhere but the litter box. It was like that horse's head in the bed in that mafia movie.

This was all very surprising; 99.9% of the time, she was exceptionally quiet and well-behaved...and 14 years old. I was really young then, but Dad and I laughed about it for years afterwards.

Moral of the story? Never tell a Siamese what they can or can't do, and realize that cats know good people from bad.

/Pasha was awesome

Black kitty is not chipped, so it looks like he will be staying here. We're tied at 5 votes source for Hoisin and Killers. Only one and a half hours left until the polls close, so please don't let kitty go without a name.

tigerose: Good Meowning! I hoope you all slept well. Today I have to figure out what is causing Eli to be twitchy, esp. In the morning. I would think fleas, but he had his Revolution 3weeks ago!

Is he twitchy around his face -- whiskers & eyes? That was one of the signs of low blood sugar problems in the late, great Barclay. If it's happening in the morning, before breakfast it might be a problem, even if he's free fed. If Barclay slept for a long time (4 -5 hours) without eating it would sometimes happen.

sherpa18: yobbery: We may have to trim that fluffy Biscuit butt...

Ethnic brushes would work if you can't find a shedding blade (NOT a Furminator, not the same thing at all).

This is what a shedding blade for a cat looks like:

www.thatpetplace.com

You'd not think something like that would remove fur, but it will do a marvelous job of removing loose kitten wool (like in the undercoats of Maine Coons) and very fine kitty fur of the approximate consistency of kitten wool. Can't get a darn thing with normal slicker blades but I'll get enough fur off with the shedding blade to darn near make a kitten-sized kitten wool sweater :D
