Sad to say, but I'd be willing to give the parents a Hero tag for being willing to teach their kid a lesson rather than blaming everyone else but their son (see the story from the other day about the mom who blamed the person whose car was stolen)

Presses charges.....if my kid did this when he's 14, they'd be pressing charges against me for BEATING HIS ASS!!!

"with his 18-year-old girlfriend" A 14 year old boy has an 18 year old girlfriend. I think that's the real story here.

FTA the kid was already on home detention and probation, so obviously this kind of asshattery isn't new to him. Without knowing more who knows if he kid is acting out because the parents were completely ineffectual until he was old enough to start getting into real trouble or because the kid is budding sociopath and the parents are at the end of their ropes.

what a second, he's 14 and got a 18 year old girl friend?

"Palm Bay police said the teen stole his father's car and took it on a 3 a.m. joyride with his 18-year-old girlfriend at Palm Bay Regional Park."

Obviously, this is all the girl's fault. What 14 year old boy wouldn't steal a car and sink it in the lake for some 18 year old trim?

/I wouldn't, because my parents would have done the same thing
//seriously, way to go Dad, you're doing the right thing and being a good parent

The car had sentimental value to the dad. The 14-year-old was conceived in the back seat.

Headline made it sound like the kid was dead and buried.

For all that the kid needs to be punished, giving your own child a felony record is just bad parenting.

No evidence of sexual contact; I'm sure it's strictly platonic.

Is anyone saying they had sex or anything related? If not an 18 yr old can have an14yr old friend all day long.

No, the father is in the right. The kid farked up, and farked up big. Throw the bastard in juvie until he turns 18. It's not like a felony charge is going to ruin this kid's bright future, he seems intent on destroying that on his own. Besides, if the father didn't press charges, then he's allowing his kid to steal another car.

Father's a hero for pressing charges against his son.

That POS was a total loss well before it went in that lake. One of the few cars that even a used car salesman won't touch.

Aren't juvenile records usually sealed after your 18, and hence pretty much disappear? Or is that only for misdemeanors? Or not a all? I was a good kid, so I have no idea.

I used to do hiring for the last company I worked for. We could not hire felons, including those who scored felony charges as minors. Early on I thought that before 18 didn't matter, but for us, age meant nothing. A felony was a felony, doesn't matter if you're 21, 60, or 14 when you get convicted of it, and it, like your credit score, follows you for life.

They are sealed but are easily unsealed by family court judges. And when they are unsealed they show up on background checks after that but look like adult offenses.

Felony Vandalism > 10k... (leaning skateboard against the wall and leaving black smudges) mother filed the charges and I was sentenced to 1 1/2 years in boot camp. Happened when i was 14 and shows up on background checks now (22 years later). Real offense was running away and it taking over a month to get caught.

I'm not downplaying the boy's role in taking something that didn't belong to him, but I am saying the father actually left his keys in the car and the vehicle could have been taken by anybody.

Yikes! She threw the book at you. That's such an asinine offense, I'm glad you explained what was really going on; my outrage was building.

In your estimation, on the balance did it help you or hurt you more that she turned you in?

Well, if so, he'll have to be a republican.

He wrecked a DODGE INTREPID. I mean, he basically did ole Daddy-O a favor. Dad should be letting Junior bang his 18 year old GF while he watches.

You are missing the big picture. The Dad didn't make him steal the car so he isn't "giving" him a felony record. The child earned that all on his own.

Neither really.

Honestly I was rebellious but the whole running away thing I still feel was needed. My mother was later diagnosed being a paranoid schizo that was bi-polar. But at the time she was a well to do doctor and deep in the southern baptist cult which loved to burn my possessions and saw me as "satan" or "an antichrist". Of course I did have a mouth and would refer to her and her friends as psycho bible thumping hypocrites. Long story....

It's messed up but the horrible things that went on while being locked up definitely stopped me from ever doing anything illegal that could wind me up in jail in the future. I did get early release but had to sign some things on never mentioning anything that went on even to a shrink or I would automatically get 10 years in adult prison.
