Ok, come on, my headline was better

2012-08-16 08:58:12 AM
They had the stones to do what Australia didn't. This is truly great news, but how the fark is he going to get there?

2012-08-16 08:58:49 AM
Woohoo!

2012-08-16 08:59:11 AM
Great, now we have to rehash the same arguements all over again. Lets get this one out of the way:
Assange has not been charged with a crime.

Make him a diplomatic courier.

Well this will end well.

2012-08-16 09:00:10 AM
Good. Can we stop hearing about him now?

cameroncrazy1984 already solved this for them yesterday. They will park one of their air craft carriers off the coast of England in international waters and use one of their Blackhawks to land on the roof of their embassy. Wam, bam, thank you man....Julian is in Ecuador.

2012-08-16 09:01:00 AM
Good for you Ecuador. Though I don't think you're going to be able to get him very far out of your embassy.

I dont think that was the deciding factor

If anything, I bet ya they were gonna deny him asylum originally, but the threat that the UK made showed them that its not about questioning over a sexual assault, as nations dont threaten to storm embassies and risk war over someone who is wanted only for questioning.

2012-08-16 09:01:22 AM
They have lovely Sash windows.

2012-08-16 09:01:47 AM
I don't really see what's in it for Ecuador outside of primo international trolling cred.

2012-08-16 09:01:57 AM
In a televised address Wednesday, Patiño said that the Ecuadorian government had received a written notice from British authorities that they would "assault" the country's embassy in London if Ecuadoran authorities failed to hand over Assange to British authorities.

Wow, that would be an act of war if Ecuador could actually do anything about it.

Nope, in order for somebody to be granted diplomatic status, the host country has to first accept it.

They can't cancel it once it's been granted except to declare somebody persona non-grata and force them to leave the country, but that doesn't change the fact that the UK would have to agree to grant it first.

2012-08-16 09:02:42 AM
So if he's actually a rapist, that doesnt matter as long as hes your hero for causing grief to the western establishment?

After a few years couped up in the embassy, he may wish he went through a trial.

2012-08-16 09:02:59 AM
In conclusion, I want to remind you that no matter how I die, even if there's a suicide note, it was murder. Cheers!

They could assault the embassy in Quito.

Diplomatic status has to be granted by the host nation. I don't think the UK would give it to him.

2012-08-16 09:03:12 AM
Not a fan of the knob.
I hope he gets his clock punched for any reason whatsoever now.

I'm going to be that guy.

"Ecuador grants asylum to WikiLeaks ' Assange"

Come on subby if you are going to copy a headline verbatim, get it right.

That or get Dr McCoy to administer some tri-ox compound ;)

Good for you Ecuador, good for you. I'm pretty ashamed of my government's actions over this affair. I couldn't care less about Assange, but I do care about the implications for other embassy staff in less respectable countries if Britian followed up on its threat.

2012-08-16 09:04:08 AM
Como se dice 'rape'?

What was it?

Considering the Swedish government seems to just want to pass him through onto the United States government I'm skeptical that even they believe he's guilty of a crime.

All they have to do, then is threaten to PNG any UK foreign service personnel that are currently in Ecuador if they don't accept Assange as a diplomatic courier.

I get this strange feeling that the same people who are so eager to tag Assange a "rapist" would *flip their farking lids* if an equivalent law was proposed in the US.

the UK would reject the diplomatic status of the ambassadors. By PNGing him, or whoever assigned courier status to Assange, the status would be null.

So if he's not actually a racist that means he's being actively and illegally persecuted for exercising what is probably the most important of the rights that we in the US hold dear and for exposing the illegal activities of several governments. but that doesn't matter because OMG (sorta) RAPE(maybe)!

Ecuador is friendly with Mercosur countries in South America
All they have to do is threaten U.K that they'll (Mercosur) will take the Falklands hostage
if they don't allow Assange free passage

blacked out automobile to airport, to private plane in closed hanger, done several times. That way, there would be plausible deniability on Englands' part re: "we didnt know when he left"

I doubt the Brits would be stupid enough to stop the car and arrest him anyway, even with a country like Ecuador. Would cause problems re: relations with other countries who would wonder if they would pull the same nonsense on them.

I'm wondering if the "threat" to rescind the status of the embassy was basically a way for the UK government to get out of sending Assange back to Sweden, but making it look like they were willing to go to almost any lengths to actually do it. They basically wanted to force Ecuadors hand into giving him assylum.

If I was semi-wanted by the CIA I don't think I'd accept asylum in Ecuador. Not the most secure country.

The up side? He was granted asylum.

The down side? He was granted asylum in Ecuador.
