(Huffington Post)   Rep. Joe Walsh apologizes for previous statements in which he said Muslims all over our country are trying to kill us. Just kidding, he actually says if we don't actively discriminate against Muslims, Americans will die   (huffingtonpost.com) divider line 108

I joined this party, whatever for,
I'll talk about 9/11 some more,
Its tough to handle this Islamic hate
Everybody won't listen, yet I berate.

They say I'm crazy, but it takes all my time.
Everybody says, Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
I keep making up clues, for an Islamic crime.
Hates been good for me so far.

I am just as guilty as the next person in blaming GOP'ers for stirring up shiat, and, you can say that he makes more of this issue than necessary, but, I don't find anything wrong with this statement:

"While the overwhelming majority of Muslim Americans are as peace-loving as everyone else, there are radical Islamists right here in the United States trying to kill Americans and destroy this country."

Is someone suggesting that there is no threat of radical islam in the U.S.? Does this guy repeating this make some peoples racist bias dig in even deeper? Probably, but, that is their own issues.... you still can't stick your head in the ground and be totally P.C. and say "There is zero threat from foreigners trying to bring down the U.S.".

That being said, and to be fair, he should also bring up that their is plenty of domestic, "good ol' boy" "terrorism" going on as well, with fringe anti-government splinter groups and the like that the government has to keep track of as well. What he said for Muslim's basically goes for everybody.... The overwhelming majority of people are basically good people, who just want to get through their work days and come home and have some quality free time. But, there is a small percentage of crackpots and crazy people who want to cause harm for their own insane reasons, and we have to be on the watch for them.

It hasn't been Muslims gunning people down lately.

On the first paragraph I quoted: What do you suggest we should do differently? What is Walsh suggesting?

I really don't see him advocating smarter screening and intelligence. He's stirring up anger and fear only.

You may have a valid point (which should be explained more thoroughly). He certainly does not.

Diogenes: What do you suggest we should do differently?

And on further thought, let me add to the question: What would you differently about Muslims specifically? Or should radicalized groups that are prone to violence be treated equally? Should the laws and law enforcement processes be different for 'suspect' Muslims? What makes a Muslim crackpot any different than the douche who shot up the Sikh temple?

To people like Walsh, stirring up anger and fear IS smarter screening and intelligence.

"While the overwhelming majority of Muslim Americans are as peace-loving as everyone else, there are radical Islamists right here in the United States trying to kill Americans and destroy this country."

Assuming the second half of that is true, let me ask the following questions:

How many, roughly, radical Islamists are in the United States now? Relative to the general population of the US and relative to the Muslim American subpopulation of the US, how many would you guess?
How do we tell the difference, Joe, between the peace-loving Muslim Americans and the radical Muslim Americans?
What policies and strategies would you suggest putting in place that can help us catch the radical threatening elements that do not unfairly infringe on the rights, freedoms, and liberties of the overwhelming majority of Muslim Americans, who are as you said peace-loving?

I don't disagree that people like him are using "good facts" for purposes to "stroke bigotry". Agreed, he needs to have more to his stump speech than "There are a bunch of radical islamic people out there ready to kill you!".

He's using that as a justification for severing all ties with CAIR.

It's like making the factual statement that some violent gangs only accept African-American youths to justify severing all ties with the NAACP.

Me. Well, no serious threat. Other parts of the world are different, of course, but I haven't seen much evidence that there's a whole lot to worry about here in the States in the last decade.

He called her "irresponsible"

A deadbeat dad who has claimed to be struggling to get by on a 6-figure income called someone else irresponsible and didn't get punched in the face? That's not the America where millions of Americans believe in an America that's the America millions of Americans believe in. That's not the America I love.

dletter: Is someone suggesting that there is no threat of radical islam in the U.S.?

When a person makes a statement, it's traditional for that person to back that statement up with some facts. If he has a legitimate reason to believe what he's saying is true, he should explain his reasoning. I'm not just going to assume it's true. That would be stupid. You can't go around all day just assuming everything everybody tells you is true until proven otherwise, especially when it's somebody who affiliates with organizations like the teabaggers that have made it a point of stirring shiat up and lying.

Sorry, but when you affiliate with a group of people who march about holding signs suggesting they might start shooting people they disagree with, you sort of lose credibility in the eyes of sane people.  Normal people with healthy minds filter information based on their past experiences with that person and their affiliates.

Walsh affiliates with dishonest people, so I automatically assume he's being dishonest when he says things until proven otherwise. That's just how being a normal human works.

I really hope the residents of Walsh's new district vote him out in November. Tammi Duckworth may have no legs, but she still stands head and shoulders above Walsh...

Fill in the blank with just about any sort of person or group and the statement is just as valid.

homeless people
dog owners
Republicans
Democrats
peach farmers
phlebotomists
christians

So yeah, this guy has no point other than to pander to his base and stir up anger and fear.

"Radical Islam" is a fig leaf for any Muslim that attends mosque regularly, has a beard, with a darker complexion than Mr. Walsh. Of course he couldn't tell the difference between a Muslim and a Sikh so they're all fair game.

"It's important to know that the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI have severed all ties with CAIR because of their ties to terrorism."

a) What 'ties' did DHS and the FBI have with CAIR to begin with?
b) I'm not well versed on CAIR, but are their 'ties to terrorism' of the "This guy who works for CAIR had a father who contributed money to a mosque that was run by an IMAM who's brother knew a guy that once served OBL dinner in a cave 20 years ago" type?

in short: fark off, Joe.
