(ESPN)   US beats Mexico, in Mexico. For you non-soccer fans, the degree of difficulty here is comparable to forcing your wife to admit that she's wrong about something, at your mother-in-law's dinner table   (soccernet.espn.go.com) divider line 120

What the hell are YOU doing listening in on my dinner conversations, subby??

2012-08-16 12:30:03 AM
Yes subby, but now try imagining that after your wife admits she's wrong, she tells you she lost a soccer match to Canada and then El Salvador, which eliminated her from Olympic consideration. I don't mean a team of your wife, cloned 9 times. No. Just your wife. Losing to Canada and El Salvador. Because that's how bad they are. And that's what the US team did.

2012-08-16 12:42:18 AM
Yeah ... except they're only allowed to say one word every five minutes, and your wife keeps randomly falling down pretending to be hurt, stopping the conversation for another ten minutes.

She'd still mumble it through a mouthful of mashed potatoes

Those knocking our performance of not getting to the Olympics have to remember that wasn't the full national team. No excuse, but it wasn't. So you can't claim that our national team failed at the Olympics. The full team just went to Mexico (Azteca is INTIMIDATING!) and won for the first time in 75 years against a Mexican team many consider to be on the rise, on a night where they recognized their gold medal winning team. Beyond impressive.

So they can only win when it doesn't matter? As a Minnesota Vikings fan, I too know what a moral victory is.

Agreed, the meaning of "friendly" is lost on the Mexicans.

Actually they didn't. A number of players (Gooch, Dempsey, Bradley et al) weren't released by their clubs because it was a friendly. They had a player that typically plays DM on the back line and a number of players with ;less than 10 caps (the guy who scored the winning goal was playing his 5th match for the full NT).

Well, at least they disposed of all of their excess jars and bags of bodily fluids last night on the field. What a bunch of animals. It's like Philly, except instead of batteries and coins they all lance their boils and then take shiats and throw it at somebody. Yikes.

Oh come on. It was a decent win, but they played like shiat the whole 2nd half and just capitalized on one breakdown.

The game should have been easily 3 or 4 - 1.

Well, I think they threw fewer bags of urine than they would have had this been a WC qualifier.

Watching ESPN last night, all the commentators laughed at the proposal of USA winning this match. It is unheard of, ever, not a possibility, and no matter the odds would be a bad bet at a dollar.

I know, but "technically" this was the USMNT and not something like the U-21s or the Olympic qualifying team

.

Who cares what the result is. It *could* have been many things, but in the end, Timmy played very well and the US capitalized on an opportunity whereas Mexico couldn't. A win is a win. And for those thinking the win is meaningless, it gives the US a LOT of confidence looking ahead to the inevitable WC qualifier against Mexico in Azteca

2012-08-16 08:42:50 AM
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that the U.S always plats pretty well in exhibitions and qualifying matches for big tournaments. But when they play in those tournaments they play like shiat. If this is true, why is it?

A friendly is more about how you play than anything. The US has the same problems it's had for many years now:

Pretty much 0 midfield play
Lack of a real striker
Confused central defenders

All on display again last night.

It's nice they won, but let's not pretend this means the US team is as good as Mexico right now.

2012-08-16 08:53:23 AM
So what exactly do you win for these friendly matches? Friendship? Are the teams drinking the same malts with 2 straws now at a '50s diner and talking about going steady?

/I'm guessing it's nothing, you win nothing for a "friendly" win

No, the US just won and broke a losing streak that lasted 75 years.
And Azteca isn't as formidable as it once was.

2012-08-16 09:07:01 AM
The US is also the last team to beat Spain in an international knockout game

ha ha ha

I beat the system, I turned my mother-in-law to my side!

my wife refuses to argue with me in her presence because I beat the system.

/ also, I don't think I'm special. mother's of woman always seem to have something out for their daughters. the difficult mother-in-laws are always the mothers of the husband. I love my mom dearly and my wife does too... but I can tell, she's more reserved around the wife then my mother-in-law is around me

if you dont like the sport or the outcome, then why post here?

that score reguardless of it being 1-0 at the end of 90mins was a win for the US.
but i bet youre the type of person that would have watched King Felix throw a prefect game after 3 hours and still complained that the score was 1-0. point is that it goes a lil deeper then the 1-0 score.

Same reason soccer people come in every football thread and posts, "oh I thought you were talking about real football not armored wankball"

Even though they're called it soccer everywhere until football got really popular, its true Google it....

Good point. It was really embarrassing how Cowboys fans paraded up and down the streets of the DFW metroplex celebrating that historic win over Oakland.

I do appreciate the "devotion" of some Mexican soccer fans. They really strive to portray themselves as the lowest life forms in our galaxy just to intimidate the opposition.

2012-08-16 11:05:48 AM
Mexico was coming off of a Gold Medal in the Olymipcs while the US Team was coming off a great two weeks of enjoying soccer on TV.

This is not that big of a deal. You had a US Team with "Something to prove" and a Mexico team that had just won a major international tournament.

One team was up for it. One team wasn't.

Let's not make this a bigger deal than it really is.

Neither team that played yesterday played in the Olympics.

So, what was Mexico's excuse now? I can assure you, they do not want to lose at home to the US. They did not lack motivation, and since this team wasn't Mexico's Olympic team, they shouldn't have been tired.
