That "tank" has a flat tire.

What does some podunk Alabama town need with a tank anyways?

What is the operating cost of that for pulling over speeders?

It's not being used for that, this article is clearer.

I somehow doubt that this was actually pulling over speeders. My guess is that this dude is misinterpreting what he saw. Or Texas has very alert and cooperative highway speeders.

MAN, I know the cop-hate around here is greater than the need to RTFA, but really, people:

The Etowah County Sheriffs Office has acquired an armored vehicle that will be assigned to the Joint Special Operations Group for use in SWAT calls. The military-surplus vehicle is worth about $600,000 but it was acquired at no cost to the county. The only expense was the cost for transport to Etowah County from 29 Palms Marine base in California. It arrived in Etowah County on Tuesday and was driven down Alabama Highway 77 to the Etowah County Drug Enforcement Unit office where it will be stored.

It's not going to be used to catch speeders, since the top speed of an APC is probably much lower than the average drunk driver's. It's to be used for SWAT raids, and is currently in storage. It was not "pulling over" anyone on the day in question, but being driven to the storage lot.

1) Joe Arpayaso is a farking douchebag
2) America needs less militarization of the police not more.

One of the Armored Pot Smoker Apprehender 2000 in the article cost someone, somewhere 600k. Didn't cost the county anything except the expense to drive it from 29 Palms MCGACC in California. Thanks DHS and Patriot Act. Thanks for the opportunity to fund podunk, pieces of shiat with power tripping dreams of being Rambo, then setting them loose amongst your citizens. What a waste.

And as a taxpayer who contributed to this machine when it was in military service, I either want the chance to have my own free APC since the article makes it seem like they are giving them away, or a choice in selling them for money to another city/country to recoup a little of the expense.

Old enough to know better: "Fark you taxpayers!"

It was provided at no cost from the military. This says to me that military funding is not quite up to where we really need it.

It took me a bit, but i deciphered that page.

There are actually 3 articles. The bottom two are the same.

The top pic is the one of the guy supposedly pulling someone over.

The bottom two have nothing to do with pulling someone over.

And none of them are tanks.

Judging by your writing, English isn't your first language so maybe take it easy on others who weren't born in the US.

Goes to show - you offer something for free and someone will come along and take it.

I wonder if they realize it probably takes several gallons of Diesel to go one mile? Or that you can't get anything for it at the local Autozone?

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: Why would ANY municipal law enforcement agency need a farking tank!? You idiots are not the farking military.

I will explain why. You see when innocent people are in harms way, and there is an active shooter, we need a way to retrieve the innocent people especially if they are injured.
I responded to a mass shooting with active shooter still on-scene and hidden. We could determine a vague direction on fire. The only vehicle we had that we could use for rolling cover was an ambulance. My partner out on full armor and drove the ambulance while I walked along side it using it for concealment. The shooter started popping off shots at the ambulance. The shots passed right through the ambulance and were flying within feet and sometimes inches of me.
A vehicle like this has a lot of tactical potential that people don't realize because they do not clearly understand the things that even small town police departments come up against.
Also I will put up one of my TacOps officers against your average infantryman any day of the week as far as tactical operations knowledge goes.

Pretty much. I'd want an APC too if I had to roll on a bunch of redneck tweakers defending their lab against not only the cops but also the RAVENING HORDES OF LIZARD PEOPLE! GAAAAAHHHHH!!! [BLAM BLAM BLAM]

A pic of lonerancher rescuing one of the lowly beat cops who got herself into more than she could handle. Good use of that mobile cover!
